    Coil drop off!!

I gave 1,35V to my 6800LE for a bench session...
After about 30minutes my screen got blank and I smelled burned electronics...

I looked into my case and saw this coil from my 6800LE...
    Any help for it?
Maybe I can resolder it. Any chance for the card?

    Hi Flib,

    How bad luck !!

How that could happen, did you have any other mods (you changed Vcore with bios?) in your card ? If remember correct your card is even quite new, do you still have warranty left ?

    --

About that failure. I think that some other component has causes this and the coil has dropped because too high temperature (=current) melted the solder off. Since this coil (that part of switching regulator) powers up Vgu either you have failure in power mosfets (other side of card in the same area) or in GPU itself. Take a look those components (mosfet's) to see any 'abnormalilty'.

    Yeah the mosfets got shorted...
but they look quite normal. But they smell bad

Vgpu was changed via bios to 1,3V
Changed the Ram heatsinks, but still have the old ones.

I will try to resolder this coil and see what happens.
    Whis me good luck

    Resoldered the coil now.
The mosfets don't get shorted by now but I still get no screen with the card...

    Any other ideas?
    Nothing looks damaged

Have you checked that Vgpu and Vdd are at the correct voltage? It would have taken a lot of heat to melt the solder on a coil/inductor enough for it to fall off, so the PCB might have been damaged from the heat, and MOSFETs can still be damaged, even if they look ok.

FLib if I was you and you have warrantie I'dve taken it back to the shop you got it from. Simple reason because you can just put old heatsinks back on and voila. Nothing changed to the cards externals except the coil being well off

If the card still doesn't work, get rid of allt he solder, get the coil back off, put it to stock looks/no mods and take it back

I had the same thoughts.. the mosfets can been 'burn' and still look like quite normal. If you can smell something wierd you propably have burn those mosfet's.

Maybe your cooler for GPU was not properly sited or too little thermal paste and it did not withstand the excess heat after modding Vcore.

    Yeah think so too...

The bad thing is that my case fans failed...
That will be the raison to the heat...

    Temps were ok during gaming...
    Were at constand 55°C.
    But then caise fans failed.

I looked into the log of rivatuner und woohooo. 78°C

    Card looks ok.
No external mods done to it.
Replaced the heatsinks with the old ones now.

Will bring it to the shop tommorow and see what they tell.
But as it seems there was nearly no solder around the coil...

    @SikaRippa:
    Remember my Blackscreen problems?
They were gone after a few weeks, strange isn't it?

    I hope you'll get in RMA'd

BS disappeared , very stange indeed !!!!! I wonder you got BS almost right away
after you got card, was less that one month (?). I DO not have good explanation for that. Could be that components (caps) were not yet 'burn' i.e. electrical properties of components can stabilize to some value during first running hours (days/weeks). Anyway, very important info, I'll have to think about that more..

You propably has sent the card already back , but if not ( ) could you check out the number of the yellow 'OK-sticker' in connector before return (it can be e.g. OK64 or OK32 etc.). That would help us to find out if there are new unknown features in some BS-cards (and identify those cards).

    Sticker is OK66.
Can send it back on Monday to Gainward. (currently it's 3pm Saturday in Germany )
I see that one mini-Mosfet on the back is a bit damaged...
That will be cause of the short-circuit.

I think Gainward will accept the card

That was also the explanation I had in my head...
    Maybe the Caps "burn in"
Sounds very odd, but why cares

    Thank you for info

'Caps burn in' - theory has to be correct solution. I remember (after sending previous post) that have read a datasheet for aluminium electrolytic capacitors and there was said something like 'If you do not use (install) capacitors for a long time (after manufacturing) they have to be 'burn in' before using e.g. with (clean) DC-voltage applied for some period'. There was not mentioned WHAT will happen if 'burn in' is not done - but your info would indicate increase of ESR (or reduction of capacitance).

No matter what caused the 'coil drop off' your card should be RMA'd by Gainward, since that was extremely faulty one.

    Another question...
Can I flash back my old Bios? I have a backup.

What about putting in a PCI Card and the 6800LE and select in Motherboard Bios the PCI Slot as primary GFX-Slot.

    Will that work?
But I get no VGPU Voltage.
    It's worth a try?

You have probably RMA'd your card already.... I think it is not possible because your card seems to be in such bad condition and propably does not give response even for bios update.
