X850 PRO VIVO ---> X850 XT PE mod possible?

Well I have never owned an ATi card in my life but now I may have to get an X850PRO instead of my planned 6800 ultra in order to have enough funds to complete my new venice rig.

Anyways is this possible? I see on newegg that the X850pro has only 12 pipelines, is there a mod to get it to x850 xt or xt pe spec? And excuse the nubness in advance. I have already searched for this but haven't come up with anything.

Wut? Says right here on this guide that the x800pro VIVO PCI-E to x800 xt pe BIOS flash can be done: link

It will only work on the X800 Pro VIVO. Manufacturer does not matter. It will not work on the X800 Pro (without VIVO). The modified flashrom has been updated on Jan 03 2005 to support both AGP and PCI-Express X800 Pro VIVO cards. The mod is the same, just get a X800 XT PE PCI-E BIOS when flashing a PCI-E card.

Now, they physically cut the traces on the chip to make it nearly impossible to softmod or hardmod

Have worked for me with 2 different PCIex ASUS X800Pro ViVo card, no laser cut and the flash succesfully unlocks all 16 pipes. One of the cards wouldn't do more than 520MHz core (stock 1.39V), the other would do 588MHz on stock vpgu (1.43V).

Yeah, you will probably have a higher likelihood of successful Pro->XT/XT-PE flash with an X800Pro VIVO rather than with a X850Pro

Hate to say this but it's near impossible to unlock the extra pipelines on the X850Pro VIVO as I'm sure ATI would've learned their lesson from the X800Pro VIVO cards as well as the 9800/9700 series cards before it...

Plus, there's way too many models now to fill in the gaps...

I would recommend just getting the X850XT non-VIVO as they're pretty cheap compared the the X850XT VIVO/PE models...

    Think about the line-up...
    X800
X800XL - well, those 2 cards are not the same as the others but anyways..
    X850Pro??
    X850Pro VIVO
    X850XT
    X850XT VIVO
    X850XT PE...

There's only a small percentage that are "bios" locked whereas the majority of them are either laser vut or disabled in the core so it would be near impossible to mod them to 16 pipes...

Plus the fact that the X800/X850 cores have matured a lot since the introduction of the X800 might mean that there's less "left-overs" now..

    Just my 2 cents...
    Cheers,
    Minh

I think the late batches of X800pro VIVO are laser cut, so one will have a lesser chance of unlocking to full 16.

I tried on 3 different X800 PRO VIVOs - all were lasercut - another big thing is that most of the PCI-E X800 PRO Vivos have 2.0ns memory not 1.6ns ( all 3 that I had were 2.0ns)

Only improvement of the X850pro over the X800pro is a core that is practically guaranteed to go higher...and because none of the top X850XTs have 2.0ns ram...none of the X850PROs do either (afaik) so 1.6ns ram is another plus.

All in all, means you're paying for higher clocks. But ofcourse, the XL at 16 pipes is hefty competition, though I dont like low core OCs...If I'm spending ~$350 on a card, me wants 580/580 at least

2.0ns ram is rated at 1000mhz and can be overclocked upto 1100->1150

1.6ns ram is rated at 1200mhz and can be overclocked to 1300 or over.

    Yup, goes something like:

2.0ns___1000Mhz (so its not really an overclock unless its over 500Mhz )
    1.6ns___1200Mhz Effective (600 Mem)
1.4ns___1400Mhz Effective (700 Mem) (Thought currently to be R520 spec)
1.2ns___1600Mhz Effective (800 Mem) (Currently only reacheable with Phase Change)

Other than that, there is XDR ram which runs quite fast too, but not much is known of its implemenation.

the simple answer is ripping the guts out of a freezer and cooling a chip to sub zero, there is a longer more accurate answer, but i am lazy and ignorant, try surfing the cooling section.
Microsoft's homepage can be found at: thesource-dot-ofallevil-dot-com - interesting, no?

It's -100C for continuous use. LN2 for -196C for short term use.
