network not workin

For some reason i have internet connected to a router to 3 pc's in my house. We used to all be networked, but now since I've updated to sp2 and so has one more of them, I cant connect to any of them now. My computer cant even find them on the network. I've tried runnin network setup wizard, tried resetting router and modem, tried new drivers, EVERYTHING. Nothin works plz help

some routers dont like sp2, is it wireless or wired. You should put sp2 on all of them if they are all windows machines, sp2 does better when playing with other sp2 comps.

Well only two of the computers have xp pro with sp2, and they cant be networked either. The other one has win98se

on each computer that has SP2, you will probably have to disable the windows firewall, or create an exception for File & Print sharing and UPnP Framework.

so this is a windows/microsoft networking thing i guess? like, can't see the other computers in network neighborhood?

instead of browsing for them, try going to start | run | \\computername for whatever computer it is. if that doesn't work, try \\ipaddress of the computer you're trying to connect to.

i guess you can ping the other computers?

im runnin on a wired router, netgear. I can ping 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.3, and im 0.2. Whats the deal?

what happens if you browse to them? start | run \\192.168.0.3 ? what happens if you ping their computer name? ex: my computer name is clepto.

wow that worked if I ping the ip. Now how do I get it to show up in network neighborhood and stuff?

make sure all computers are on for at least 30 minutes (windows master browser elections.)

then try it after then. if that doesn't work, you'll probably have to do the start | run | \\computername or \\ip-address unless you can come up with a way to do dns-masqerade, WINS server, or LMHosts entries.

a quick internet-search of those last 3 terms will help explain how windows networking works & what it requires to work properly.

well now I just found out that I cant ping or connect to my brother, even though he has xp with sp2 also. I can connect to my mother who's on win98se, but only by going through //192.168.0.3. I cant view her in workgroup anymore

your brother may still have the windows XP firewall enabled. check that & try agian. windows networking can be a lil tricky sometimes. like i said above, you may have to do the \\ipaddress or read up on ways around it. (mentioned above)

check that your software firewalls are running ok and recognise each computer on your network.
check tehe internal firewall that comes with your windows
check your router is configured properly.

if it dont, switch off the modem and try to get all computers to see one another, lower security as low as you can until they see one another and once you got that, try to secure it again before puttign the internet back on.

so unplug the modem from the router and try to get them to run just on network with no internet? What security are you talkin about? I dont have any firewalls on period. router didnt have a problem before sp2, seemed fine with every computer in my house

ideally every guy using internet should have..... router firewall, software firewall, antivirus programm, spyware checking programme.
bear minimum.
your version of windows also has a built in firewall, if you switch it off, you need a software firewall, the best free ones are zonealarm and sygate personal firewall. - i have both.

yeah still cant figure that one out.
but if you say you never had a firewall setup before and all this stuff is new to you, then i suggest you read the routers manual, update the firmware from the manufacturers website and set it up properly.

your computers should see one another and be a secure as fort knox.
