    questions about LSI 9201-16i

    http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/prod...16i/index.html

    this here ^

I'm a lil confused about its purpose.. is it to simply attach 16 HDDs, no RAID?
or MUST you have a LSI RAID controller, & this acts as a way of attaching more HDDs to the RAID controller? (so that the 2 cards work together).

I'm actually hoping that I can simply use it by itself, to attach 16 HDDs, no RAID

    TIA!

    I can tell you...
    In iMR(integrated MegaRAID) mode...
    you must create RAID array...

only IT/IR mode(or IT) supports native mode....

All LSISAS2108-based RAID HBA's firmware mode are iMR mode..

Supports up to 16x 6gb ports, i dont see why it would be a addon for a LSI card just to add more slots, if it is then its one of a kind but i highly doubt it mate..

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

Would that work seeming as the LSI card is sata/sas and the HP is only SAS? 28 slots?

according to here the HP is pretty 'non-specific' to what it gets attached to:

    http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?...t=SAS+expander

^ the HCL list already includes couple LSI 92XX cards.. the thing is, ir u read the op it says to connect RAID card to HP via port 8 or something - not the external, which is what I want to do

cause if I can, the gives me 32 SAS/SATA (both work the same /whatever) - not that I need that many.. at most I need 28

Hmm news to me.. but i did read this and sounds doable..

Q: How do I install the HP SAS Expander and what are the power requirements?
A: The card needs an x4 PCIe slot on a motherboard and draws 11 watts of power. The card doesn't require software drivers, it is invisible to the operating system and motherboard. A common dilemma is people wishing to use this card in an empty chassis like a Norco RPC-4220 as a "drive cage". Some people have resorted to using an old motherboard, or buying a low-cost Intel Atom based motherboard to serve as an ON/OFF switch for the chassis and to power the card - this solution is still far cheaper than buying a prefab expander chassis. Unfortunately this card has no external 4-pin Molex power connector like the Chenbro expanders, but it's a fair tradeoff given Chenbro expanders aren't really available anymore, and the HP expander uses a newer SAS2/SATA3 expander chip (support 6Gbps operation), whereas the Chenbro expanders are SAS/SATA2 (3Gbps).

Q: How do I connect harddisks to the HP SAS Expander?
A: There are 9 ports total which can connect four harddisks each. The external SFF-8088 port is Port #1. The internal SFF-8087 are Port #2 through Port #9. I recommend populating drives beginning with internal Port #2. To uplink the expander to your RAID/HBA, connect to Port #8 on the expander with an SFF-8087 cable from your RAID/HBA. If your RAID/HBA has an external SFF-8088 connector, connect to Port #1 on the expander with an external SFF-8088 cable.

I personally think its dirt cheap for the ability to connect 32 HDDs
