    Upgrade from qx9650 to 2600k

As the title suggests im looking at upgrading, and was wondering if it was worth it? Would i see much of an improvement for gaming going from qx9650 to 2600k?

    Current pc spec:
    qx9650 @ 3.6
    8gb ddr3
    180 total ssd (2 drives)
    2x 480gtx
    790i ultra mobo
    antec 1200 psu

    Thanks

Hmmmm good question. I came from a Q9550 at 4.3 to the 2600K at 5.0 and in black ops I am seeing zero difference at all. I only picked up like 200 points in 3dmark11. But synthetic benchmarks show huge gains!!!

Depends on what you do.. some games will benefit.. I went from a 3.8 q9550.. running a sandy @ 4.8 now.. it might be just crap, but it feels faster now..

you're running 480 SLI? always good with the extra horsepower It can never get too fast.. hehe
    Gigabyte P67A-UD7 F6a
    i7 2600k @ 4.8 (1.35 bios vdroop lvl 2)
    Gtx 580 @ 900/4004
    Corsair HX 1000W PSU
1 Corsair Force 120GB SSD boot
    2 Intel X25-m 160GB SSD(2. gen) for games

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

It depend but a 9650 @ 3.6 and a Sandy at 4.6 for example well yeas a lot of differences... If you are running heavy CPU games or Simulations this will give you more FPS with the same video cards.. way smoother less stutters etc.. just stronger CPU.
    I do have also other machines Q6600, Q9550 @ 4 GHZ ( SLI ) and a Q9650 @ 4.2 GHZ( SLI )

Wow thanks for all the replies. I know it'll be quite a bit faster but i'm also thinking ahead, aparently theres a even better chip coming sometime this year which is like the "enthusiast" version of sandy bridge. Would you guys recommend waiting for that?

I have a QX9650 and a X3380 running at 4.1 GHz and I am definitely waiting for the newer CPU's (socket 2011) that hopefully won't come with an integrated GPU that I'll never use and limits bus clock overclocking.

Your current system is certainly not low-end so I'd wait it out a bit longer if you can resist the urge to upgrade....

With that setup I would strongly consider waiting for next version of Sandy Bridge in Q3(?).

Please read around the intel section, thousands of threads regarding this topic.. and yes you will see the biggest JUMP you have ever seen

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

For gaming - don't bother, wait for socket 2011 and Bulldozer.

    Thanks

I realize this is an old thread but I am running my qx9650 @4ghz (11.5 x 348) and the only thing slowing me down is my gtx460 768mb. I'm not even going to upgrade to socket 2011 when it debuts. What I am going to do is buy the highest end Kepler when it comes out and slap it in this pup. My theory is that all you need the cpu to do is be able to run the video card. I can personally give a crap about +/- 7or 8 fps to be honest. It's all about the gpu at this level of cpu's. When I do upgrade the cpu it will be the 22nm Haswell. That will have all of the usb3.0 and sata 3 bull S all worked out and I'm sure an air cooled 5ghz overclock will be standard through out all of the forums. This is just my opinion though. Good luck with whatever you do, or did.
