    Question flashing a AsRock 890GX Extreme3 BIOS on a 880G Extreme3 motherboard

would that be possible? I mean I've heard of a guy who flashed M3A780GXH -> M3A790GXH. It worked.

Now you see the 890GX and the 880G have 1:1 the same layout. Nothing's different. Except that the VGA operates at a lower speed. So nothing interesting at all.

I guess it would be possible, but don't really know. Did anyone try?

And for those who ask themselves: why the heck?!:

It's because the "new" 2.42B BIOS for the 890GX has the Add VDoop Adjust feature like LLC feature. 880G is still at version L1.71B with the changelog "Chassis fan react on CPU temp. And if you want this feature, please connect your 4-pin chassis fan on Cha_Fan1 header" ... fail

You can probably use MMTOOL to extract the image information module from a 880G board and replace the module in a 880GX BIOS. Not tested, but it would probably work.

I'll whip something up. For now the best I can offer is the 890GX Extreme3 BIOS 2.4 as thats the latest version currently available you can get at the rom file.

WARNING: This modified 890GX BIOS is intended ONLY for the 880G Extreme3. I do NOT own neither a 890GX or 880G mainboard and thus this BIOS is UNTESTED. This BIOS is being provided only as requested. I STRONGLY advise before attempting to flash this BIOS you have a backup BIOS chip handy with a original copy of a 880G BIOS on it.

    How to flash

    1. Make a bootable USB/CD
    2. After USB/CD has loaded in pure DOS type; AFUDOS.EXE /i880GEM.ROM /PBNC /N

    Changes:

    - Attempt replacing Image Information module [to hopefully make it work]
    - Replace P6 table

    Notes:

You will likely need to perform a full CMOS reset (set CMOS jumper to "clear", remove power cord and battery, then leave for a few mins) after the flash process before knowing if this modded BIOS works.

What's the differences in this mod bios vs the actual 880g 1.70?

If the mod BIOS works, you will get all of the goodness of the 890GX BIOS.

Worked fine the way I did it (I used the 2.42B and the AsRock flash tool for windows). It's still recognized as a 880G Chip though in CPU-Z, but not in Everest. The HD4250 is still the same it didn't get no BIOS Update.

AFUWIN, what settings you used to, ALL Blocks or just Main BIOS Image.
I tried just Main BIOS and in bios the board is seen as 890GX Extreme3

It is not about the price, it is about the possibility. And also for the people who have a 880G like me and want the features of the 890GX BIOS.

    so long

Done it too with no problems.Question is how to set those things for v-droop right?

Also latest bios found 2.43 does not have these v-droop options included

Latest bios though works better with my memory, allowing it to CAS 7 at 1600,although 2.42 won't post at all at cas 7,only 8,so Asrock bios team should do something about these damn memory problems.Same memory worked flawlesly in Asus 785G evo mobo with cas 6@ 1600...go figure...

i apreciate all this info but i am interested only in the part related to bios settings on this asrock mobo

    Droop Adjust - 1/4, 1/2, disable
    OVP - 250mV , 450mV , 650mV , 850mV
    PSI_EN - Disable , Enabled
    PSI_A - Single Phase , Two Phase
    DPM Setting - Disable , 20% , 25 , 30% , 35%
    VCore Offset - Disable , 0.05V , 0.10V , 0.15V , 0.20V , 0.25V , 0.30V , 0.35V

I am curios to know what each one of these options change...,and what could be the best combination for stability

Ket, I'm reading the posts as Peter Burg & Alex-Ro have flashed the factory stock 890G BIOS directly onto the 880G, not your modded BIOS. Am I wrong, guys?

sjohnson you are right. I used the L2.42B Beta BIOS from AsRock. not the BIOS provided by Ket.

+1 It list my board as 890GX extreme3 with 880G chipset.Wondering if an extreme4 bios would work, since this adds NB voltage option

Seriously, I wouldn't keep jacking with different BIOSes until you have a way to recover from a bad flash. Its only a few quid to buy a spare ROM chip.

NB voltage, not CPU-NB,NB solely Also in new bios on extreme4 they added loadline calibration(enabled/disabled) so things would be extraordinary if a 880G would work flashed into 890GX extreme4.But now i saw that extreme4 has different audio chip, that sucks
