[K6-2+ inside] An really old-school review

    Hi guys,

Is somewhat unusual in times of Phenom II, i7 or whatever someone do a
review of an jurassic hardware like K6-2+, but as I had this rig
laying around so decided to do an "really old-school" review of this...

    Results:
    K6 Write Allocate = ON

    K6 Write Allocate = OFF

Enjoy and sorry my bad english.

Compared to any modern system its really a throwback, but still fun to play with.

    Thanks!
CPU-Z runs a bit weird in this rig, look this:

Reading the vcore on multimeter always show a higher value than the setted on jumpers (eg: 2.3v = 2.36v on practice) but at least its stable, in pifast and hyperpi screenshots, the vcore fluctuation must be cpu-z madness...

This should really make us appreciate how far we've come in these last 12 or so years. Our cell phones can run circles around this thing. Also, that 120mhz overclock is excellent for it's time. Thank you very much for this review.

Got mine still running, actually my sig from another forum where my computer info doesn't matter is:

Mini AT case (ATX modded) with:
    8cm TT Std Fan @7V
    Generic 300w ATX

I've ran in the same mb a few cpus in the last 5 years, from an ancient k6-IIIp 380, a k6-ii+ 550, to the actual k6-iii+ 500. Unfortunately my mobo limits me to 100x6 and only two sticks of ram. No manual options over 100MHz bus, and only 512KB L3 cache. IIRC, my 1M's are around 5:20s.
MVP3 aren't stellar as Ali on memory benchmarks. For a vast info on these platforms, just head to the k6plus forums!
From personal experience, w2k runs quite a bit snapier than XP in regular desktop use, unlike in newer and more powerful slot/socket A builds.

That is sexy in such the retro fashion. Kinda like the old 70's Playboy magazines; with a certain degree of class involved.

Yeah, this is really amazing, just 10 years between a processor who takes 522s to run pifast to an hexacore capable to do this task in just 16s, just impressive...

Nice rig, "my" first rig (which isn't mine because I had 5 years old in this time) is a AMD 5x86 133MHz + 16MB + Trident 9440 () and a good old Creative SB16 and Win 3.11, nostalgic...

A whole new world revealed when i upgraded from a pentium 1 233mmx to an AMD k6-2 400mhz on an ASUS p5a and an ATI rage fury based on a rage 128 pro chipset.Overclocking to 500mhz and upgrading to a real k6-2 550mhz and then to a k6-3+ ACZ oc to 600mhz as talked in the forums on AMDZONE.com and finally to K6-3+ ATZ core oc to 660mhz.
Kept this mobo active in the quake 2 and the hidden and dangerous era.K6-3+ was the p3 katmai killer cpu due to its for the first time acomplished l2 full speed cache! Also use daily this cpu in the sun cobalt qube3 .AMD 's first burst in my opinion.

    Much love.

I also used to run a K6-II or K6-III under TEC. The funny thing is that I never actually ran an AMD CPU older than the Thunderbird core (Athlon) anything but retroactively. I went from a Pentium 100 to a 200, then to a Celeron 433, and then to a Celeron 533 (ran it at 920 MHz heh). After that last system's motherboard blew up, I jumped to a 1.2 GHz AMD Athlon. From then on I've been mostly an AMD guy, though I had a stint with a Core 2 Duo E6600 back in 2006 and 2007 between runs with an Athlon 64 3000+ and a Phenom 9850.

Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

EPoX still has its russian pages up.

    www.epox.ru

I think they changed their name in some point, to SUPoX, and... I don't know
    History

    http://www.epox.cn/

EDIT: Looks like they are still active in china. They have some anniversary edition mobos (1995-2010). Though looking at their promo pictures, all mobos look like really cheap. For example THIS
Nice HTPC mobo despite the shopped heatsink...

I have an EPoX mobo on my Socket A rig, thats used by my folks. I really love that one.

On topic, the first "real" computer that we had at home, was powered by AMD K6-II 500 MHz. Before that, it had 233 MHz CPU. The mobo is some SOYO board with AGP bus. It had some Voodoo card when it had the 233 MHz CPU, Unreal, NFS II and Quake II were some games I played with it. When the CPU was changed, it had GeForce 2 MX. Of course the rig was already quite old when we got it. I played Operation Flashpoint with it. Its still around, but not in use. Tried to OC, and got 600 MHz out of it. Should install Win 98 on it and do some retro gaming. Maybe a dual boot with ubuntu...
