Baking my 280 GTX

Well, i took the plunge and decided to cook my card.

This is a continuation from my original thread I think my 280 GTX is blowing up

To sum it up, the card either pink screened or showed nothing, crashing the PC every time a 3D application was run.
E.g. You could boot into Windows 7 Safe mode, but you couldn't Windows 7 normally.. Due to Aero.

Anyway, lets begin with the pictures:

1. The Victim



2. Taking off the sticker



3. Removing the Screws



4. Remove the back



5.Remove the heatsink



6. Clean it up



7. Place the card on the baking tray



8. In the oven it goes.. 200C for 10 mins.



9. Oh ****, something appears to be very wrong here..



10. GPU has fallen out, and another bit appears to have dropped off.



11. Hmm, this bit appears to have come off one side too.

OK, so.. i think i know where i went wrong.. Placing the card in the oven the wrong way dammit.

The card has been placed back in the oven, in an attempt to resit the GPU and the other bits which came off...

Well, it appears successful, everything re-soldered itself back into position.
But total, including the first attempt the gfx card has been in the oven for around 30 minutes.

Ok, well.. after a little bit of soldering action and re-heating in the oven, the card *LOOKS* right.

14. Well.. It seems to be sitting properly.



15. Damn flash, thermal tape on the stuff.

17. ALL FINISHED! Hopefully putting the sticker back on will help it work!

TESTING

18. Well, there it is.. Installed and ready to go!



19. RESULTS!



No Display, card fan was stuck on 100%, computer booted and thankfully didn't catch fire.

Conclusion.

FAIL

But, could it have worked if i hadn't of ****** it up? We will never know..

I thought someone who would do that would understand that the idea behing cooking a card is to melt down the soldering in hoping that when you let it cool down in the oven for a few hour that all the soldering took place like it should originally giving back its contact point where it failed to do.

Very sorry for your misfortune.

you could add soldering in the little piece that as fallen and place the GPU core back in place and recook it in hoping that the core would resoldered itself in proper place, just make sure to align all the contact first.

Thought, you will need to add weight on top of the core in order to do so and i would weight the core and put the same amount of weight on top of the core when cooking. Make sure that the weight won't be melting too.

Oh wow.. that is epic. No joke though that is pretty damn awesome and I'd personally just keep the GPU separate Good luck reassembling it, photo document it all and become an internet hero.

And that was before i buggered it up!

I wonder why you didn't see it coming that the huge chip *could* fall of when the solder melts ;-)


Anyway, even if the GPU is aligned perfectly again after the fixing try ... 30 minutes @ 200 ° C is very long i think, so it might have destroyed some other parts too

Heh, thing is.. I watched some youtube vids, saw some pictures of other attempts at doing this and people had put the card in that way round.
So i just assumed "Oh well, seems strange but should be ok" my brother even said to me, i think it should be the other way round. But i said and quote "This is how other people did it".

Looking back though, most the videos/pictures i had seen of other people doing it, they where all cheapo small GPU core cards, like a 8800GT at best.
It PROBERLY would have been alright, but when i was taking it out the oven i slightly banged the tray and thats when it dropped out.

Your right though, when the GPU had fallen out, i knew it was game over straight away, as a lot of the solder in the socket had started to spread, although i couldn't see it touching each other.. I'd imagine when i put it back in/with the weight of the GPU it spread.

Something else i'd like to warn people of if your going to do this, is the LED light on the back of the gfx card. It's a long piece of plastic in a C shape, which is really glued down and the only way to get it off it to snap it.
I didn't bother doing this, instead i just put it in the oven.

As you can see in the picture bellow though, at the very bottom theres a white blob.. Thats where it melted.



So if your going to try this SNAP THAT OFF!

Next card is 1 or more 480 GTX's hopefully, and if i come to doing this again, it will be the CORRECT way.

ummm did you really throw it in the bin?

i noticed 2 of the transistors had been unseated... c440 and c406...

i had same prob with my card before it stopped working it would start up but with no display and card at 100% fan same as urs...

when i checked the card closely i had a prob with 2 transistors where they were soldered one side but the other side of 2 transistors had been unseated from the solder

so i soldered then back and the card came back to life.... just a thought

but then again ur gpu dropped out so maybe urs isnt as fixable.
