EXCLUSIVE-Intel headed to pricing talks with U.S. regulators

WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC.O) will meet with U.S. regulators with an eye to changing its price structure as the world's largest chip maker tries to put its antitrust troubles behind it, an Intel spokesman told Reuters on Tuesday.

Rivals Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.N) and Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) have accused Intel of unfair pricing, particularly in giving big price breaks to customers who only buy Intel chips. Intel last month agreed to pay $1.25 billion to AMD, which will withdraw all its regulatory complaints against Intel, but pricing disputes between the two remain unresolved.

i wish the US regulators would drag Intel prices down to be as competitive as AMD ...

but taxing Intel is a lucrative income for the gov

its just to bad that intel's money dosnt go to the people that they say that they are being unfair to. and how is NV part of this, they dont make anything cpu or chipset wise anymore and when they did make chipsets they wernt reliable (i guess they still have the 9400m but it wont around much longer)

LOL, so this is what the idiotic EU bureaucrats & FTC have wrought: higher prices for consumers! Now Intel and AMD will use the FTC to help raise prices.

Serves them right for quashing competition that was not actually hurting consumers.

its just to bad that intel's money dosnt go to the people that they say that they are being unfair to.

Who would that be, other than the competitors they should be trying to crush? Certainly not consumers, who have continued to enjoy lower and lower prices for more and more performance. Ah well, maybe not so much anymore. Thanks, antitrust watchdogs!!!

The problem is, Intel prices are MORE competitive than AMD's, that's why AMD's been racking up losses. You know, perf/$.

US regulators are going to help increase Intel prices until AMD can actually compete without losing money, apparently.

There was news that the FTC was looking into investigating Intel and possibly charging them... and of course, Intel saw this ahead of time considering the fact that their new head of their legal department specializes in Anti-trust law.

One of my colleagues wrote a fairly lengthy article about the situation and it explains it fairly well, needless to say... Intel will make as many concessions as they can as long as they dont get owned too hard.

best case scenario, is that they get fine (2-3bln), and have oversight like Microsoft does. worst case is the the ftc breaks up the company (it has been mentioned before). there is the remote possibility that intel could get away with out a suit.....unlikely though.

This is assuming that the pricing structure changes for all products. It sounds as though this might be in relation to more specific products like atom, etc. As well, the pricing structure will likely apply to OEMs, so we aren't likely to have as much to worry about; it just means that Dell will.

IMO, FTC stepped in too late for this.
During the 8 years of Bush administration, FTC is like sleeping

I'm not going to argue about Intel unfair market practice, yes FTC should of done something long time ago. But price fixing? where does that lead? Don't like the current trend of punishing success. We as a consumer lose in this case.
This does not punish Intel, if anything they will make a fatter margin.

I don't really see where you read that there will be any price fixing? Just that Intel will discuss its pricing policy with the regulators, in my opinion this suggests some kind of agreement similar to the one Intel got with AMD a few weeks ago. In other words, not using their dominating position in the market to keep others out.

Could people please explain to me how they came up with the idea that this will increase prices for us? I guess I'm not smoking from the same crack pipe as others.
