    Worst Xeon W3520 ever...

So I bought a Xeon off Ebay was supposed to be a batch 3848A something but instead its a 3844A704.

The board I got is good, seems to do 225 BCLK without even trying but I can't even get it to run 4ghz HT stable. 1.25v is not enough and it errors, 1.3v it gets up to 95c...so I lose again. I have a sunbeam tech core contact freezer was supposed to be a really good heatsink! I even rotated the heatsink and it still gets hot, and the base is lapped and touching the IHS good. Is there something I'm missing here? This is the first i7 I have had, or did I get a screwed CPU...?

What are your temps with 1,25v ? And you meen Vcore right? I know most W3520īs need less, but i need about 1,38 to get 4,2 stable with HT (on my 920er). Maybe you should think about your cooling

From what I am seeing that hs is alright, do you have the fan on high speed? I noticed while reading a review that it has low/high speeds.

With HT on and 4ghz 1.25 it will crash on prime withing 20 seconds, but it gets up to like 85c. Kinda bummed sold my Core 2 quad for this was expecting atleast 4.2ghz stable with HT but cant even get 4 =(

Doesn't seem like my temps should be nearly this high either, some sites said this cooler was even better then the TRUE

Turbo mode on this board and Xeon does everything the complete opposite, it slows it down...

Have you checked to make sure the fan is running at max speed? Did you try a re-mount of the hs yet?

I think you should test with a low ram multi, low uncore first...
200*20 should be okay but you have to make sure that bclk isn't holding you back

    Yep, and yep.

And the thing idles at 35-38c but jumps up the 85c in 2 seconds. I think it's got a bad sensor, wouldn't be the first chip thats done this to me. I had a E8400 that went to 95c under same cooler, but my Q9550 at same speed never went about 65c.

That doesn't sound promising...Have you forced the cpu to throttle yet? If you peg it at 100c it should throttle down to cool, it would certainly tell you if the sensors are accurate or not.

Well it would crash a few degree before getting to throttle temp.

So I just tried 20x200 w/ HT Uncore 2400 something, RAM was 1260, Vcore 1.23v, QPI 1.35v, PLL 1.85. Prime95 small FFT crashed within 30 seconds.

Small fft crashing that quicks sounds like not enough vcore, uncore is too low also raise it to at minimum double your ram speed.

Test it using 15 multi and see if you will crash. IF yes then your bclk isn't stable at all

My uncore is twice my RAM speed

and I have tried 15 multi thats how i concluded it was stable up to like 230bclk.

Usually smallFFT NEVER crashes on i7, it's not even remotely stressful on that arch, so it must be really really unstable.
I have an ultra low vid w3520 that does LinX at 4Ghz with 1,17V but also goes over 90C using a Scythe Zipang... those things need water really.

    QFT.

The Sunbeam wasn't even engineered to cope with i7's so replacing that with something a bit more up-to-the-task will make a huge difference.

Yeah I wish I had my old chiller. I changed the ram speed which auto changed the uncore to 2400 or so. It seemed to drop the temps 5-10c and actually passed OCCT auto 1hr. Still needs alot of volts and runs hot.

I will buy water again someday!

It sounds to me like your cooling is an issue and also it may be the chip.
check for flatness on the IHS and also on the cooler base.
Try another HS like a TRUE if you can get one from a buddy to borrow.
Your really running hot and in the 80's to me is unacceptable.
