Arrow AMD Phenom II 940, dry ice and 417 MHz HT

Shortly before I left Germany to attend CES in Las Vegas, I did a quick dry ice session with one of my colleges, Hyperhorn. We tried the Asus 790FX, Foconn Destroyer with 780a and Gigabyte 790GX, but came to the conclusion that the CPU we had (early sample) is a dud. Max Cinebench stable clocks were 4320 MHz on the Destroyer and 4200 MHz on the other 2 boards. Max. clockspeed we reached was a mere 4970 MHz, it froze at 5025, unfortunately. With the help of -5C cold air after opening the window, we reached a HT speed of 417 MHz which was the best result we could come up with.

Overdrive helped with the overclocking though it has some bugs every now and then.

hehe, nice way to have fun with a dud. my first early sample was a dud too. getting 5GHz 32M stable was like pulling teeth, even with LN2. i am hoping to have better luck with some recent retails.
i don't quote in my signature, but best WR ever...

Yes, we ran out of dry ice to do any high HT stability testing. Max on air was 345 MHz.

Is it possible to have high HTT together with high NB clock?

It is not that much of a crap one, my one does only ~80mhz more on DICE. If you wanna see these early chips fly you need LN2.
Did you remark freezes of the OS when using overdrive on the gigabyte?
very nice htt, next time go for nb clock

Yes Overdrive stopped responding in 90% of the cases with the Gigabyte 79GX while it worked like a charm on the Asus 790FX.

I hit 4140 MHz suicide on air with just 1.575 V, so 4970 with dry ice and up to 1.95 V is not that impressive if you ask me. Cinebench stable was only 4320 for a single run.

    On this mobo ,with a K8 ( BE-2350 ) i boot @ 400MHz . But with an Agena i do only 235MHz ( my ex 9850BE was very crappy ) .
And i thought that it was finished ,the high HT . But no .
Nice clocks from you What's the max HT under cold ? Same thing like old K8 ? More cold = small HT ?

Max HTT-Link speed was about 1200 MHz before the coldbug kicks in, so we tried to have it below 1000 MHz, cos it is a pita to wait for it to heat up to 57C with dry ice. I would suggest finding the max benchable clocks using small HTT link and NB dividers, then ramp them up step by step to see where their limit is. Since he haven't been aiming to hit new benchmakr record, we kept using small dividers.

I speak about HT . You reach 417MHz on air but under DI ?

    You mixed sth. up.

    CPU@Air: 345 MHz
    CPU@Dice: 417 MHz

Cold air helped to cool the northbridge during the dice-session and to go beyond 400 MHz, otherwise max was ca. 380-390 MHz.

Nice to see what you can do on DICE.

My chip has similar results. Suicide was like 4.8 on phase, on LN2, it was like 5.8.

The chip does seem to scale very good with very cold temps.

It is nice to see HT so high. I need to see what I can do on my chip.

    Thanks for sharing

I will see what I can do with a little more time as soon as I get back from CES. Trying to get a retail CPU until then as they seem to overclock a lot better than the early press samples.
