MSI Announced X58 Motherboard For Core i7 (Nehalem) Processor with DrMOS Equipped

Taipei, Taiwan – MSI, a leading manufacturer of motherboards, announced its latest high-end motherboard “Eclipse” which is based by Intel® X58 Express chipsets. MSI has developed the motherboard with”DrMOS” which delivers highest efficiency, zero noise, and best performance into the P45 series; now on new “Eclipse” X58 motherboard. MSI expanded the usage of DrMOS to bring much more power efficient platform.



The Coming New Desktop Era of Enthusiast

The first visible change on Eclipse is about it equipped the Socket B (LGA1366) to support the next generation Intel Core i7 processor (codename: Nehalem), also it will replace the current FSB to step further on QPI (QuickPath interconnect) structure to enhance the bandwidth up to 25.6GB/s (twice than FSB1600 standard). Eclipse will be the first 3-channel memory structure ready motherboard to support 6 DIMM DDR3-1333 up to 24GB capacity, also provides enhanced bandwidth up to 32GB/s (higher than DDR3-1600 standard).

Nice!! I've never considered an MSI board before, but this one actually looks good.

Can someone who knows their stuff give an opinion on the "DrMos" power switching thingy please?

After working with P45Platinum and P45D3 Platinum I can say that DrMOS is a good thing. The droop is not very bad, and everything stays pretty cool in the socket area.

and the good part is that you still can desolidarise them from the pcb and make a "Shamino-like" mod to have a free socket space !

I don't want tri channel, I want my quad channel! The board still looks very engineering samply. It also looks like the motherboard is now being taken over by RAM slots... And where are the micro boards?

And why are they still putting so many PCI slots in there..it's time to move on.

I hope that they'll have a cooling like the P45 Diamond but one we can remove the WB like ASUS / gigabyte

Well huge heatpipes might not be so good. Canucks were pretty hard on the Gigabyte 45 Extreme and said their cooling was usleess and impractical [well duh on the last one]. More copper increases costs too.

Well I thought I better quote it before someone clicks on the flame cannon.

The heatsink / heat pipe design is terrible, you can't argue it and if you do, then you are looking at the wrong photos. Are there positive things about the heat sink setup on the GA-EP45T-Extreme? Absolutely. Unfortunately they all get cancelled out by the major design flaw of having cooling fins sitting directly on top of the heat source preventing any kind of thermal transfer to the rest of the exceptionally well made heat pipe setup. This massive oversight has added cost to a motherboard that is already near the upper end of the market, ASUS "super boards" and NVIDIA failures aside. So many power users in the forums have openly exchanged the heatpipe setup for small, efficient little heat sinks that do a fabulous job cooling the chipset under the most extreme conditions. Hopefully these cries for the heatpipe madness to stop don't fall on deaf ears.

I also like Intel's X58 Smackover board a lot, except for one thing and that is the fact that it only features 4 DIMM slots.
