[exp] Nehalem to become Core i7 processor

Intel have decided to brand Nehalem with a new name “Core i7″. That means no matter Bloomfield, Lynnfield, or Havendale will officially get their name.

There will be 3 Bloomfield to enter PC market later this year, and the 999USD top-of-the-line Bloomfield is the only Core i7 Extreme Edition processor current revealed.

All i7 processors and i7 Extreme Edition processor will be officially announced in Aug 11st, launch date set to Q4 this year.

That gotta be a joke, just like their 64lane PCIe ibexpeak southbridge. Or did Fuad buy the site?

    http://en.expreview.com/2008/08/05/i...-pcie-20-lane/

I would imagine Core 3 naming. Also i7 would be wrong. It should be atleast i8 then to make sense.

Well, we'll know over the weekend, they say announcement is then-and-then.

Doesn't seem like something they'd be prone to photoshop to me. Maybe it's a logo for something different, and they got confused, but what would it be a logo for? Black logo for XE, blue logo for regular processors, the chipset is called X58, not really too much left to pick from.

edit: This is all I could find on Intel's site: http://www.intel.com/support/perform.../CS-025996.htm

A slipup in reuse of old terminology, or Core-Itanium convergence?

Thanks Shintai for pointing out this huge mistake. Ibex Peak only have 8 PCIe lanes, because PCIe 2.0 Graphic card will directly link to Nehalem processor, so having 64 lane is not making any sense. The chart should read like this: "Ibex Peak can have 8 PCIe 2.0 port, total bandwidth is 2.5GT/s."
I have updated the page as well.

Sorry for the outburst. 64 PCIe 2.0 lanes on ibexpeak plus the slide itself showing it was just....

i7 doesnt make sense either (And is an itanium part). And how to seperate dual, quad and octo nehalem cores...

And Core 2 is 8...so this would be 9.

As much as I thought "Phenom" was ridiculous and cheesy, this beats it... by the whole nine yards.

But really, "Core 2 Duo" shocked a lot of people too, so they might be playing with scrabble and whatnot.

    That's intel's plan,they design to name the nehalem family… INTEL® CORE™ i7 PROCESSORS.

It's a codename used by a single program. If it was it wouldn't say Core in the logo. Are you saying Expreview photoshopped these logos just to get hits?

I'm sure there's a reason to this ridiculous name. But as far as "intel core i7" sounds, it might as well have been "intel core qwelfkjals;kdfjlkj"

No, but they might have gotten it from someone that did. I´m just saying it would be very wierd to call it i7. Specially without Duo, Quad and Octo.

    While you are at it...

Thats wrong, 2.5GT/s is the speed per lane. And it got nothing to do with bandwidth without a width (10bit per lane).

Total bandwidth is 4GB/sec, 2GB/sec in each direction.

The Ibeakpeax dont use 5GT/s, so its actual PCie 1.1 speed with PCIe 2.0 specs. The DMI link tho is x4 and 5GT/sec. Hence the limitation and thereby not 8GB/sec or 4GB/sec in each direction.

I wouldn't be surprised if Intel renamed their Itanium line-up into "Intel Core i7", but calling Nehalem like that sounds kind of ridiculous. "Intel Core 3" would make sense for Nehalem.

Core 3 wouldn't really work. I think Nehalem is a radical departure from what intel has been doing .. (has it?)

Well yes and no.Yes from the I/O perspective and the way cores are connected(no more MCM and FSB).No from the perspective of the cores and uarchitecture itself(basically penryn cores with better back end, SMT addition and better virtualization capabilities).
Core3 could be a good name for it,but it could be confusing to some since after the "3" would follow the "quad",Core3Quad(less informed customers could ask does it have 3 cores,3 quad cores etc. )
