OCZ Vendetta 2 bests the TRUE (for reals yo)
Quote:
When you hear the name OCZ, you immediately think memory, but what you may or may not know is that OCZ has been producing high end performance products with exceptional quality in many other market areas, including power supply’s, cooling, gaming peripherals, and for a short time recently, customizable laptops. Today we are going to be diving deep into OCZ’s cooling product lineup, and taking a look at one of their newest air coolers on the market, the Vendetta 2, featuring Heat-Pipe Direct Touch (HDT) technology. This new cooler improves upon the excellent cooling performance of the original Vendetta series heatsink, which was designed for 92mm fan applications.
If you have been keeping up with the latest in cooling products over the past 2 years, you know that there is a new evolution in air cooling that is taking place. That evolution is the refinement of the HDT or Heat-Pipe Direct Touch, an innovative design which advances air cooling performance power even further then originally thought with heatpipes and copper alone. This new generation of heatsinks has put traditional styles on the verge of extinction. Up until a few months ago, serious performance cost you between $50 to $75 USD, and now for well under $50 dollars you can get not only a high performance top tier air cooler, but get all the accessories included without the need to spring for additional fans or thermal paste.

thats right folks, the OCZ Vendetta 2 has bested the TRUE at its own game, $49.99, TRUE performance, no modification necessary, fan included. Satisfaction guaranteed.

I've told people this a bunch of times...the Vendetta 2 is awesome. I'm using it but with even a higher cfm fan for better results. It's better than the 4 heatpipe HDT heatsinks as well because OCZ uses thicker fins...I also have the Xigmatek S1283 and S1284...the Vendetta 2 is better than both hands down...if and when OCZ comes out with a 4 heatpipe Vendetta 3, it will be the best air-cooler by far!

would be perfect with a better mounting method and lga771 clip
edit - heatpipes count could be increased but few do it correctly. Most have the heatpipes packed closely together which means they are releasing heat into a denser area. Space them out!

i wouldent say that the OCZ won out rite they didnt test with the same fan and it looks like they used the supplied thermal paste
good showing though, defiantly a winner at $30

interesting results Spawne. but basically, if price & lapping wasn't an issue, the TRUE is still on top right?

correct, but without TR fixing these problems out of the box, the best "retail" cooler is the vendetta 2

I would like to see Sumbeam core and Zerotherm Nirvvana in some review with those. Noctua NH-C12P not really necesary, better NH-U12P.
Thanks for the review.

The only constellation that the TRUE will still beat these HDT-designs hands down, seems to be IHS-less CPUs. Anyway, for the price those HDT-heatsinks deliever outstanding performance, it seems. Thx for the great comparsion. Especially the results lapped vs. unlapped TRUE in direct comparison to all the competitors was very interesting. If I didn't already own a TRUE and didn't intend to run my CPUs without the IHS, I most likely would've already bought one of those HDT-style heatsinks. What I'm looking forward to now is the next comparison including the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer.

Another great review!
How was the contact with the CPU? Did you use the pressure paper pad stuff to determine the contact pattern?

One way or another the C12P did very well for a downdraft cooler IMO.

It does, but where it stands on that chart could get pushed back further when the test results for the heatsink showdown are compiled in august.

dual fan config failed for the TRUE the same as it did on the single fan test @ 3ghz at 1.504vcore, you will see alot more combination of fans when the TRUE black edition review is out
