Seem like a lots of the HD4870 is dead in 24hrs? Just want to know how many of you still have the HD4870 still alive? If yes is it Stock heat sink or you have swap it to the after market heat sink?

i wouldent blame ati on this its most likly qimondas doing, and all of the cards are the same reference then they get thier sticker on some so brand dosnt matter
im waiting for samsung or hynks based cards to come out
also there are 280gtx dieing as well and they use qib as well as the 8800gt 1st batch and some 3850 that shipped with qib so...

Something could be dodgy with the RAM, who knows, I'd like to know also how many, if any people out there reading these forums own a HD4870 and it is working for them?

had one Sapphire 4870 up and running stock for 29 hours rebooted alot going from xp to vista no problems at all
on a x38 mb q6600 no oc
i have two 4870's in my system and i'm gaming like a madman - no problems whatsoever on my end. i've already done a couple four hour gaming marathons, too - and my ambient temperature is hot out here in Southern California. i have two Sapphire reference cards. i haven't touched the cooler, haven't tried to overclock, and haven't flashed the BIOS. my idle temps are extremely high in the mid-70's but they don't seem to get much hotter when i'm gaming. all i have is the GPU-Z graph and it doesn't look like the temp goes up much in-game. Everest doesn't work with them so i can't use that to monitor in real time.

iTravis, I think you should be fine, just don't touch the BIOS or o/c the card. If it does happen to die at least it's not your fault at all (things like that do happen although not very often to worry about) and you'll be able to get a new one anyway.

Two Sapphire 4870's running perfect. Of course I didn't do anything silly like a BIOS flash either.

But seriously I think this thing is blown way out of proportion. Problem is cos 90%+ of the cards that died were messed with. Either hacked bios flash or oc or whatever.
Only few of the cards 'just died' if of course we can believe what the guys are saying and I see no reason not to.
Thanks GOD , he scared me!
Ironically I read lots of people (here and on other forums) laughing about posts in XS about dying cards... many say we are to blaim to have dead cards for flashinng the BIOS (and they say we did it "incorectly") and even that we shouldn't RMA the card if it failed even if we were o/c (which I didn't) it in CCC or similar... just absurd considering ATI themselves give us this ability to begin with in every driver release
So by them if you enable overclocking in CCC and you find your HD4870 dies.. it's your own faultand if we want to just increase the fan speed again it's our fault because the card was mean to run 70-80C idle... and they call people who make new ways to do things noobs... I wonder who's a noob here

Hmm all I'm really saying is we can't say there is anything wrong with HD4870 per se, cos almost all cards that died were flashed with edited bios and experimental tool.
If most of these cards were not messed with and would actually be dying stock then I would start pointing fingers at ATI or Qimonda. But that is not the case.
And also, how many card really died that we know of?! 10? 15? Out of how many thousand?
Let's put things into perspective.
so far I counted 10 people posting them having their HD4870 dying
