    My E8400 - 4950Mhz ALL AIR

Well....I couldn't get any Dice to play with this week-end, so, beeing very upset and bored I thought it wouldn't be a very bad ideea to try and see what I could do with this little chip on air. That beeing said, I opened the window, I put the sistem out in the cold (~0 oC outside), I dressed up in my ski outfit and started pumping in volts

    System

    E8400 Q746A+ Cooler Master Gemini II + 2x100 CFM Sunon + 2x120mm Antec Tricool + 1x 120mm Evercool
    Asus Maximus Formula
    Evga 8800GTS 512Mb
    2x1Gb Crucial Ballistix 8500
    Antec EA500W

    Results

    1. Max clocks- 4954Mhz @ 1.72v

    2. SuperPi - 9.437s @ 4900Mhz

    3. 3D

    3DMark 2001 - 85663
    3DMark 2003 - 51689
    3DMark 2005 - 28148

Spi 1M stable at 4900, and 3D stable at 4700Mhz... For a little air cooled session (and not even a sub zero air cooled session) I would say that is pretty sweet

Now it's time to put it under some real cold and see what it can do, and as soon as I have the time that wiil also happen.

    Very xtreme

You do realize that with air cooling at this voltage there's a good chance of degrading if not killing the chip?

    Of course

Keeping it at 1.62v for 3DM runs for a few hours, plus the volts I pumped in to get the max clocks certainly doesn't do him no good. BUT.....that what it's all about in the end, going as high as you can, not keeping it safe
For instance, my champ E6600 used to do Orthos @ 3600Mhz with 1.275v in his good days, but after lots of experiments (including Dry Ice runs) he needs 1.35v to do that now. Now he is having a well deserved rest, with 1.25v @ 3Ghz in my silent daily use system. That's also going to happen with this E8400 when a new CPU will come on the market (if he doesn't pass out until then). You can't expect to do extreme things with them, and then have them working like they just popped out of the box...I think no one expects that

Wicked 4,9 Ghz on air .. looks like a nice chip

    Thx guys

    emoners:
I was more interested at hitting a max on air, rather than Prime runs. It does Orthos @ 4Ghz with 1.28v and 4,15Ghz with 1.33v, with normal air temps, as you can see here. Last night I was too concerned with breaking 5Ghz on air (which I didn't manage to do) and getting some nice air 3DMark runs, so I didn't have time for any stability tests.

wedfighter I really don't trust the readings on the chip's sensor, they are totally off. CoreTemp 0.96.1 was not able to show below 34/28 in idle, which is a joke, it probably had something like 5-10 degrees

    Nice.
I hope you dont mind my intrusion in this thread, didnt really felt like making another thread for this as even mine is same stepping CPU.
You should have got better Spi time though.
    I have managed to push mine at 4815Mhz on air ( TrU120E ) @ 1.67v.
Due to insane vdrop and vdroop I cant go above this on my Abit IP35 Pro.
Managed to get 9.391s SPi run and a 3Dmark 2005/2006 runs. Sorry no screenie of 3dmark with me now. Will post them later.
Here is my SPi score. and setup.
    Stepping is Q746A482.
Its not this chilly here. 25°C ambient. Pretty much standard case config nothing special. Looks like a good batch.

ya i remember that post... i was just kidding
we actually have the same chip but i can't seem to get those clocks at low voltages. what's your bios settings on your 4ghz at 1.28v run?

    catalanu: Thx mate.

Se gasesc ventilatoare din astea, o sa iti spun eu ce si cum.

    lukas69 Better Dice man

    NapalmV5: Salutare!

    Turrican & Giraffen: Thx guys!

Funky: Well done bro! I know I could have had a way better Spi time, but I was more interested to get the highest clock possible on air. That's why, I didn't tweak, I used low mem clocks, I didn't even open memset to put some 4-3-3-3 at those clocks, an so on. Anyway, you've got nice results there , a little bit of cold would have helped you a lot

    emoners:
Well....it depends on the mobo you are using. For the 4Ghz, if I remember well, on Maximus, I had very low volts on the NB, PLL and VTT, can't remember the exact numbers, but they were normal daily volts.

hehe, we dont get cold here as such. I am from Mumbai in india. Costal area. We never get too cold here. This winter is coldest one in 40 years here and still the minimum temp was 10.4°C. This is as low as it has been in my life :P

Usually even minimum temp dont go below 25 here. high to low 30s all time of the year except 1-2 winter months :P

I know, I saw that you are from India. Maybe the only solution to get very cold on air is air conditioning (that is what I was thinking about).

Funky did you use setfsb or something like that?
Because Abit from bios or uguru cannot set odd fsb only even like 534-536

nope, i dont use setfsb or any other windows based tool for that matter.
My Ram chips are not great anyway so i have left them on 5-5-5-8.
All is done from bios. 1.6 beta 04.

No...I don't think that I will get that 5Ghz all air, I won't redo that set-up again. It's been nice to play like this, but there comes a moment in every man's life when he has to grab the dice pot and start to do some serious business
