    8800GS news

We learn that GeForce 8800 GS was [formerly] known as GeForce 8700, but NVIDIA didn’t want it to overlap with [the] GeForce 8800GTS product line, thereby [allowing] sufficient time for manufacturers to assimilate inventory. But [nVIDIA], faced with [steady] aggression from RV670, changed strategy, GeForce 8700 will [become] GeForce 8800GS, and only [planned] for OEM market.

    But [AIB] manufacturers of NVIDIA will introduce GeForce 8800 GS graphics cards to [the] retail market also;

GeForce 8800 GS retail price will be $149-$179.
    Posting on itocp mentions:

*Will replace 8600GTS (presumably until D9P), and be good competition to 3850 (in his opinion)
*More balanced solution than 256MB 8800GT (in his opinion)

Hmmm... I wonder if it's worth it compared to the 8800GT 256MB.

    384mb memory vs. 512
    96 stream processors vs. 112

So which would overclock (and bottleneck less) better - this or the 256mb 8800gt?

    Fixed. :P

Well, imho the 256 definitely puts the hurt on in high rez...Figure this to be essentially what the 8800gt is to the new 8800GTS...only with probably crappier AA performance. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it can cut it at 1600/1680 any better than the 256MB.

Personally, the low bandwidth sounds kinda icky even with the extra frame buffer, but it'll probably be decent without AA...Just like the 3850 (but for different reasons).

Point is though, if it's actually the same price as the 3850 (~$170), it essentially becomes the 3850 to the 8800gt 256mb's 3870...and finally gives something for nvidia to fight the 3850 price range, something they needed badly as D9P is a couple months away and the 8600GTS sucks tremendous balls.

Everyday that passes, I wonder what Nvidia was thinking by not naming this series the 8900 besides the fact that they didnt want to cannibalize sales of the 8800GTX/Ultra (though they did it anyways w/ the GT and GTS!)

Seems like the 8-series is really prolonged, or is it just me and my wishes for the new GTX/Ultra?

Is there a person alive who, from the top of their head, could put all these 8800's in performance order including the future ones?

    GX2,Ultra,GTX,GTS640,512,320,GT1024,512,256,GS,BS. .

It was much easier when there was just GeForce DDR and GeForce SDR.

I could if I wanted to, but some of those cards aren't out yet and I am not that familiar with the new GTS ie(G92).

i5 750 @ 3.2 Ghz, stock volts on stock cooling
    4GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 7-7-7-21
    Gigabyte P55-DS2
    EVGA GTX260 192shader

    i'll try...

    from slow to fast..

GS, Old GTS, GT, GTX, New GTS, Ultra, GX2

GT, GTX and New GTS position are interchangable though depending on resolution....

I don't think it will be DOMINATED, just slightly outperformed. I don't think
there will be more than 15% difference at <1680 res.

What are you talking about? Compare the old GTS with 96 shaders and the
3850. Add that this has the improved core and higher shader frequency.
It will be the other way around.

    Oh yes they are
For those who are not spoiled brats but have to save up/work for their
gear, it has much better price/performance ratio.

    another useless post
Compared to current midrange (8600, 2600, 3850), it has great specs.

Me too. Mine went to 425/1172 on stock volts, full 16. Ah, good times.
My 7900GS only goes till 525/1450 full stably now, but I'm going to replace
that annoying fan with a block sometime, and then its vmod tiem!

    Yes, dominated.
The person I was responding to was responding to someone talking about AA performance...
