    Really? An EK fullcoverblock?

Does it have real contact with the memchips and the core?

That's what I'd be worried about.

Unless you flatten the whole block out and re-machine the steppings for the memory and core I don't see how this would contact properly. You might be able to mount it, but it certainly wouldn't be ideal contact on all the chips & the core without some serious reworking.

    Pics?

Ok here is my old waterblock

Its an alphacool effort meant to be put on a 6800/7800 or 7900

As you can see this is a full cover block and would not fit the old 8800gtx or gts

However when the new 8800gt came out people were reporting it had the same mounting holes as the old 7900

Some people have even had some success mounting gpu only blocks and adding their own ram sinks

And here we have my shiny new 8800gt graphics card

Its a nice effort from Gainward but that cooler looks pretty poor being single slot

Lets have a closer look inside

Here we can see the parts being cooled from where the thermal paste is

Obviously there the gpu core and memory chips

But if you look close on the right hand side of the card some of the power mosfets were also being cooled

I have a hunt around for some little heatsinks that can be used later for the mosfets

Ok now the cooler is off lets clean all contact points up, i use surgical spirit but any kind of similar cleaner will do

    Nice shiny core )

Next i add a thin layer of as5 to the core and the thermal pads originally supplied with the waterblock on the ram, The ram pads are quite thick so if there is a little difference in height from the ram to the gpu core this should bridge them

Ok next up is to mount the block
With the fitting kit for the waterclock are some small washers that were the exact same height as the gpu shim so i knew at that point the waterblock would deffinately fit - i placed these at the 4 mounting points around the gpu core and mounted the block

The gpu core lines up nicely with the waterblock part that has channels cut out for the original 7900 core and the rest of the full cover block covers the ram chips too (i think one of my ram chips pokes out the side but only by like 1mm at most

The rest of the old mounting kit on the back works fine too

On newer block than this for 8800gtx etc they do have a small plate that comes out to the right to cool the power mosfets etc...

So for my card i just got hold of some stick on ram sinks and covered all the points that were being cooled by the original heatsink

And voila! There u have it a fully cooled 8800gt card with an old recycled waterblock covering both gpu and ram

Here it is in my rig in sli form running sweet

So, in brief, you had to use very thick thermal pads on the memorychips and you mounted the block with just 4 screws around the core?

Your pics do not show how the block makes contact.

The block is making good contact as GPU temps are around 35-40c depending on load

I dont know how to measure memory temps

im sorry but what about that IC chip thats in front of the gpu. Doesnt that need good contact?

I dont think this will work very well. :\ And my EK blocks are stepped, so you should specify it will only work with alphacool blocks, which almost no one has on this forum.
