    QX9650 on Water

Here ya go guys. Just received my QX9650 from ZipZoomfly.com. Brand new retail box with free shipping and got the lowest price on the net. Although we all know that price is really not justified on an exorbiant purchase like this. Please no more financial comments in this thread. Thanks guys.

    Intel Extreme Quad Core QX9650
    Week: L73
    Package Date: 11/6/07

    Gigabyte X38-DQ6T with F4A Bios
Koolance Exos2 WC (space saving water setup)
    Corsair Dominator Cas7 1800mhz (2X1GB)
    2 X Sapphire HD 2900XT's
    Silverstone Olympia OP1000

Ok, so as a pre-requisite I had to update to the F4A bios on my Gigabyte DQ6-X38 motherboard for 45nm support. What I also did was made sure to reset all of my settings in the bios to factory defaults. (except for memory voltage) this way I like to see what the DQ6 auto detects on the quad core. The strange thing is that this motherboard automatically configures the QX to 8 X 400 (3.2 GHz and a 1600mhz system bus). I think for some strange reason this DQ6 bios thinks the QX9650 is a native 1600 mhz bus processor. So, basically it is autosensing QX9770 speeds.

Here is a core temp, CPUZ shot upon first boot up. The rig booted up great, and I am shocked by idle temps at stock voltage. 1.3625 vcore and all four cores barely deviate from one another, not to mention idle temp is 29*C... You can also see the stock bios autoconfigured frequency of 3.20 GHz and 1600 mhz FSB.

Vista feels a tad more fluid.... Maybe its just my mind. Results should be coming all day long fellas...

    W T F !

Oh , need to change my pants now.

Now where's the non-believers in retail chips doing worse than the ES.

Keep it comming, hopefully we'll see a 4.8GHz on water screenie yet!

    Thx for sharing!

Nice, but ~1 minute prime says nothing about stability... Test it for 1 hour, please

Well that it doesn't crap out in even a few secs is amazing to me at that frequency and volt.

Here we go guys. Finally came to the conclusion of my stock voltage journey.
I cant believe my eyes, but I am currently browsing OCForums/XS at a staggering 4.10 GHz at stock vcore. This Yorkfield silicon is just astounding. Now comes the time to start clocking with voltage, this is where things may start to get interesting heat wise. Got another PI run for you at 4.1GHz stock vcore:

Hmmm... ok... don't want to water down the party. But you showed only the first minute of Prime 95 there with temps of 51. I'm getting the same temps as your water setup just with a Thermalright Ultra-120 Xtreme.

Like someone addressed. Can you please post temps after say one hour of prime?

Also did you set the "stock" VCOre mannually on the mobo(if so what's the number) or you set it to AUTO?

I am not testing for stability right now man..
I am simply trying frequencys with stock voltage until it doesnt go anymore..

PS- It did BSOD for the first time @ 4.10 GHz, I tried to pop up a 3dmark05 benchy at stock vcore and got a blue screen after 30 seconds or so.

I will see the maximum of the CPU

    Next,
    4.40 GHz @ 1.47 vcore
It definitely requires a massive jump in vcore to boot 4.40 GHz to the operating system. First I tried 1.4 vcore @ 4.4 GHz and it booted but BSOD'ed shortly after. Following that I tried 1.45vcore and it primed perfectly on cores 0 + 1, but 2 + 3 failed instantly. Now, I am currently at 1.47vcore and cores 2+3 fail prime instantly again. So, now I am wondering about pushing more voltage into her.

Here is a 4.40 Ghz screenshot and pi1m:

I am having some issues with 4.30 GHz + stability. Does anyone have any recommendations on a retail?

The good news is that I am pretty sure this puppy is 100% stable at stock vcore and 4.00 GHz. Here is a temperature shot after 20 minute quad priming:

Nice, very nice! The first thing I do when I put my hands on a new CPU is test max clock and stability with stock volts, like you

Sometimes (all stock voltage you said) I see 1,31v and others 1,36v in CPUZ, is that correct? What is the real default vcore?

Thanks and keep pushing it man, great numbers!

    hey bud,
my board defaults to 1.3625.. vdroop sometimes is 1.31 and sometimes it will stay at 1.36. it has been varying as you can see but for that last 4.0 GHz shot, it had a vdroop down to 1.31

Finally figured it out. For some reason I think FSB may be having an affect on my processor at high clocks. I am currently using vista at what seems to be perfectly stable right now @ 4.51 GHz. But to get here I had to change my OC and increase the multi from 10 X 451 to 11 X 410. My ram is fine, so I am assuming it has something to do with the mobo/cpu not agreeing with 450 FSB at high CPU clocks.

Heck, in any event I am browsing XS/OCforums right now at 4.51 GHz, woot!
Here is a SuperPi 1m screen shot:

I don´t know if someone has done a vdroop mod to a Giby X38-DQ6T. 1.3625v seems pretty high for 45nm default, I hope there will be a new CoreTemp version supporting them soon, allowing us to see his real VID.

    EDIT: 4,5Ghz...

    Thanks for the replies guys.
But this motherboard is good to 535 FSB, and I have ran it at 520 FSB on my E6850 for days without issues. It is definitely not a NB contact issue. I think it may be some kind of wall on this CPU or some strap issue around 450... Because everything is absolutely beautiful right now.

But check this out. I am still perfectly stable at 4.51 GHz, this is incredible. Just completely obliterated my 3dmark06 record:
    21,302 in 3dmark06 @ 4.51 GHz, it passed without a hiccup

I am absolutely shocked with the performance of these QX's.
Guys, I am currently using Vista which actually feels stable. Just pulled a SuperPi 1m, and I am encroaching the 9's.

    4.62 GHz @ 1.60 vcore and I am sitting here using OCForums/XtremeSystems

This chip is absolutely stunning. The crazy part about all of this to me is that I am not simply sitting here using SetFSB and taking quick screenshots. I am actually using the rig, and its fully functional at these speeds.

    OK,
I have come to another obstacle. Maybe you guys can help.
    4.70 GHz @ 1.60 actual (1.65 bios selected) vcore.
It will post, but BSOD's during the OS boot screen. I know that it has been scaling greatly with voltage bumps, but I am honestly a little nervous about pumping more than 1.60 volts into this brand new QX9650. What do you guys think about longevity on these things? 1.60v + ok on water?

I am nervous, this isnt just a processor. At this pricetag its an investment.
