Nvidia cheats in HD HQV test

Pure Video can be poor, pixelized

Quote:
We've had a chance to see and hear what might be the first the AMD's counter Nvidia presentation and DAAMIT guys have got some nice proof that Nvidia has been dishonest. A lot of people will simply call this FUD.

Nvidia tweaked its driver to meet the quality standards of the most famous HD HQV video quality benchmark and with the last 163.11 and 163.44 beta drivers it can score some nice numbers with this test. The catch is simple, HQV has a lot of static scenes and Nvidia can tweak the driver to look good on this non motion video.

But with Nvidia's noise reduction turned on in the driver, Nvidia still cannot get rid of the ghosting effect and AMD people pictured it. AMD user Power DVD Ultra 7.3 which is the latest version and all the pictures were taken with 10 Mpixel Canon camera without photoshopping. AMD used the same machine with Radeon HD 2600XT with Beta 8.41 driver that are now known as Catalyst 7.8 and compared it to Nvidia’s Geforce 8600 GT and 163.11 drivers and we were told that 163.44 suffer from a similar problem.

Nvidia can get away with static scenes but in action movies with a lot of changes you can see some heavily ghosting especially in Serenity the movie.

On second and forth picture you can see the ghosting effect from the first and third picture and by clicking on them you can maximize the pictures.

Well enough said, look at the Nvidia versus AMD pictures

PC gamers would prefer Nvidia anyway...

But ya, ATI has been fine tuning the same algorithm for the past, uh, 10 years for its TV chips selling into Sony, Sharp and Samsung.

My guess is that it would take Nvidia at least a good 3-5 years before catching up to ATI in terms of image processing qualities. It's not easy.

I can confirm based on my own recent experience that nVidia video processing is lagging considerably behind ATI's (AMD) one.
For example I'm watching Family Guy on my GF7900GS coded to Mpeg4 H264 and black horizontal lines (edges of objects in cartoon) are jumping by 1 pixel quite frequently (bad deinterlacing). It was perfect on ATI x1950pro....

Oh well, my next card will be ATI again

Edit: This is on latest WHQL driver 162.18!

agreed

i swear every ing poll I've seen on a non-tech site has been like 3nvidia 1ATi as far as votes go.

even when ATi had the better card (9800s, x850s, x1900s)
go figure.

ehh I'm probably a bit pro-ATi biased though. conversely I haven't bought an ATicard in 3 years and I've had like 4 or 5 nVidia cards since... ehh go figure

ya, noticed the same on my 7800gt. till now i thought the jumping black lines were due to bad video-recording. seems like i was wrong
but i got no problems with other cartoons simpsons, futurama, southpark... :F

Yeah, side by side nobody is going to notice a difference in FPS, but image quality differences will be noticeable.

Putting a 2900XT on liquid cooling really brings down the temps

Is somebody gonna make a spoof picture like when nVidia made disappear the dragon in 3DMark01?

I remember that one, there was the woman flying on nothing and there was written "best cheat of the year" or something but I can't find it, has anybody here got it?

....and that is this issue is a moot point to me and why I will continue to buy nvidia cards for now. I buy expensive video cards to play games. To watch movies, I would much rather get comfortable on my couch and stick the DVD in the DVD player. I can understand how this would be an issue for those running HTPCs though. Realistically though, from what I read, can't this be fixed by just going back a driver version? This wouldn't be the first time there were variations in video playback quality going from driver-to-driver.

Reminds me of the infamous driver cooking incident with NV30 where nVidia presented their NV30 (see: Leafblower series) as being better performers than ATI's acclaimed 9700/9800 Pro series in 3DMark01/03 as well as games.

This, of course, was a falsehood. 9800Pro was a monster, and NV was revealed for shill 'tweaking' to force their cards into a better light.

Notice that I have an NV card for gaming and an ATI TV tuner, because the 650 Pro really is superior to any of NV's crap in that department.

Improbable. Nvidia does not sell any chips to TV manufacturers. ATI sell chips to TV manufacturers like Sony, Samsung, Sharp and others. Who do you think knows how do design for image quality better?

Avivo has always been far superior to Pure Video. From the way things are now, it'll be like that for a while too.
