Ghetto Lojack for 30$ / DIY & Pictures / Track Your Car !!

Okay this will work for socal folks and maybe other places in the U.S but I'm not sure .
First off you're going to have to go to Target and pick up a boost mobile phone for 30$ or ebay this includes the phone, sim card and activation with $10 . Then you also have to pick up a data cable for 4$ shipped from ebay , go to

    www.mologogo.com

and download the jad and jar files , upload that through webjal that you have to get from www.harrythompson.com . Once you have created a login at mologogo.com you could view yourself on a gps map. Hide the phone in a good hiding spot in your car, I chose making a small hole in my passenger seat so no one would find it . Here are some screenshots of the gps tracking its right on cue and my car is currently under a garage and i can also view where I have been , it updates every couple of minutes . The 10$ you have on the phone is only valid for 90 days so you have to re-boost after that . This really works and will give you a sort of piece of mind . For 30$ you cant go wrong . Ask me any questions .

Phone pic ; crappy phone but you could add some good features and use free services such as opera mini, google maps, gmail mobile and its a free no gimmicks .

oh I forgot to add you can't shut down the application on the phone.

question that comes to mind, does the phone have to be on [plugged in and/or just running] for this to work?

Yes it does and the application has to be running . A car charger or charging your phone would help there is also a way to hardwire it with a plug that connects to a car charger. I need to find the link but its available at autopart stores.

    Nice idea

just find a nice spot inside your dashboard where airflow is present, yet it's still hard to get to.

question- ot recharge, do u need to use the cellphone itself, or can u call from another phone to recharge the minutes?

Aren't they shutting down Boost mobile within the next month or so...?
I like the idea, I'm sure the GPS tracking option of many cellphone providers could be used, just add another phone to your family plan with GPS location or something & hide it in your teenagers car!

I know this is an old thread, but if I found it through Google I'm sure others do too...

Long story short, I did this same thing using a different service called Instamapper (http://www.instamapper.com) - they provide an API and I'm a web developer so I built myself an alert service, and now I get a text within 5 minutes if my car is supposed to be parked but it's moving. I'm opening it to signups and need some beta testers. More details below:

I followed the instructions under HOWTO (http://www.instamapper.com/diy.html) to wire an IDEN phone to my car battery and keep full time monitoring on the car.

I'm pretty paranoid about theft, having gone through it once before, and I'm also a web developer, so I used the InstaMapper API to build myself an app that knows if my car is parked, and if it is, checks every 5 minutes to see if it's moved.

If my car moves while it's supposed to be parked, I get a text message within 5 minutes, with a link to a map of the current location compared to the parked location, so I can see the trajectory.

This means if someone steals my car, I'll know where they are within 5 minutes of them stepping on the gas, and they won't get very far.

A few weeks later I had a new development framework to test out for my job, so I figured I'd build out my InstaMapper notification service to allow people to sign up.

I'm just one guy, and this is only a side project for me, so I'm going to charge $5 a month to cover the expenses of being able to send notifications, but right now I'd love to have a couple of people who want to help me with early stage testing sign up for free. If you do, of course you'll get to keep free membership as long as I keep the app online.

Anyone interested in helping me test the app in exchange for a lifetime free membership, please head over to http://cartrackr.com and wait a few seconds for the beta signup box to pop up. Shoot me your email address and I'll get you set up.

    Thanks!

    Brian
