    P35-DQ6 Audio Problem

I just got a p35-DQ6 and was having a problem with the onboard audio. Just wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problem or if it's something weird with my board. The info here about the Gigabyte Raid drivers causing BSOD saved me tearing my hair out once already (I had to switch to the JMicron ones for it to work).

When I'm in Vista32, I usually don't even see the "High Definition Audio Controller" under the System Devices in Device Manager. However, occasionally, it will show up. When it does show up, Windows does try to install the Microsoft drivers for it, but fails with the PNP problem code of 0x0000000A. I googled that code but wasn't able to find anything about it's meaning. I can install the Realtek drivers, but Vista never finds the Realtek chip. If I manually install the audio drivers, I can access info about the chip, but Windows can't start the device with "Code 10". I'm assuming this is because the HDA controller isn't installed.

Another thing I noticed, is that right after POST with the BIOS displays the PCI bus contents, there is rarely that entry in the list from Intel with the Dev_ID 0x293E which is the HDA controller. When it does show up, then windows does see it but fails as above. So something is preventing the ICH9R from always finding it's own HDA controller.

I also looked some places on the internet and saw people having HD modems conflicting with HDA. I tried removing my modem (it's older and still HW based instead of SW), but that didn't change anything. I also tried F3 (what was on the board), F4, and F5H BIOSes to see if it something going on there. I also tried removing my front panel connectors from the audio after reading the Realtek data sheet saying that some front panel audio connectors have bad HD audio connectors and tie the wrong signals together. No go.

So, something is preventing the southbridge from finding it's own parts. Any ideas? I also have a mail into Gigabyte about it, but they haven't read it yet according to their trouble ticket system. I have a sinking feeling I'm going to have to RMA the board.

Another pattern I've noticed is that the HDA controller usually shows up on the first boot from a cold start (power off), but it doesn't show up on subsequent reboots.

so, were/are you having the same problem?

It would seem to be a rather large flaw of either the BIOS or the ICH9R to have built-in devices just disappearing and reappearing off of the PCI bus. The board seems so good otherwise.

Did you ensure to install the chipset drivers first before the Realtek sound drivers? I assume you did NOT install the Microsoft UAA drivers listed under the audio section?

Yes, I installed the chipset drives first. And I'm not using any of the drivers from the Gigabyte page...only those from the original vendors as linked on this page.

The part that is the problem is that the "High Definition Audio Controller" that is part of the ICH9R chip doesn't always show up on the PCI bus at boot. And by "PCI list" I'm referring to the list of devices that the BIOS prints out after POST and after the AHCI/RAID stuff finish but before going to the boot devices.

The device in question is the one from Intel (V_ID 8086) and D_ID 293E. It would show up as a "Multimedia Controller". It is the HD audio link controller that connects to the Realtek chip. This device only shows up on the PCI bus at a cold boot. And Win Vista has some problem with it (PNP Problem Code 0x0000000A) and can't start it. During subsequent boots, it doesn't even show up in the list of devices.

Here is the info Vista provides on the error:
    Description:
Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 10.

    Problem signature:

The Realtek chip never even shows up as a device in windows. I can add it manually, but Windows can't start it (error code 10).

And I can appreciate the fact that some people don't like the quality of it. I may find I don't and buy a sound card or move my old SB Audigy over. BUT, everything on the motherboad SHOULD at least work properly.

I'm trying to determine if this is some flake issue with ICH9R in general, a software problem, or some problem with my board that I need to RMA and get a different one.

There seems to be a lot of people having problem with built-in Realtek audio (not just this board).

Just for reference, here is what a I see in order:

    Initial Install
    1) Vista Ultimate 32
    2) install the Intel and JMicron (not Gigabyte) RAID drivers for a RAID-ready system
    3) install the Intel chipset drivers
    4) install Intel Matrix storage manager and JMicron driver
    5) install Realtek LAN and audio drivers
I let the system boot as requested (I've also tried not letting it boot as requested).

    Boot Sequences:
    1) cold boot - HDA Controller appears in PCI list
    2) Vista sees controller, tried to install Microsoft UAA built in driver in Vista and fails. Digging into the driver properties shows PnP Problem Code 0x0000000A. Vista puts the dreaded yellow triangle and ! next to the device. NOTE: this is for the "High Definition Audio Controller" under "System Devices" in Device Manager, not "Realtek High Def Audio Controller" under "Sound, video, and game controllers".
    3) reboot
    4) HDA controller no longer in PCI list (nor on any subsequent boots)
    5) device manager no longer shows the hardware

Now, I've also installed the Realtek device manually. Windows seems to be able to talk to the drive (or maybe it's just reading stuff from the drivers). But it can't start the device and no audio devices get found.

Now, I've also ran the Ubuntu 7.04 LiveCD to see if that worked and it was just some problem with Vista. It also couldn't find the audio device on the bus.

    I've tried the F3, F4, and F5H BIOSes, so I don't think it's that either.

Anyone else have these problems at least getting it up and running (not to say sounding great)?

Have you done a manual CMOS clear yet? Sometimes past BIOS settings can carry over into newly flashed BIOS's, so I strongly suggest ya give that a try incase this is some funky BIOS setting gone amiss.

The PCI buss dump is quite similar to yours, and I was listening to music on mine as I made it. I did not have the Command 0400h (Bus Access Disabled!!, Interrupt Disable) line though, but otherwise it seemed the same.

Hmm...well, I also noticed that my device is showing up as in D3Hot power mode (powered off) which could have something to do with it not being a bus master or I/O enabled.

Why would it be powering down while everything else is working correctly. I went to do some more debugging. I unplugged the HD and the modem again and was just playing with seeing if I could try to reason out the issue. I also put a piece of metal onto the two jumpers on the board to do a full reset of the CMOS parameters.

    Here's what I found out:
    1) resetting to the defaults brought back the pretty Gigabyte screen for the board. It had disappeared to a blank/black screen while I was flashing the board around. Otherwise, no change with the BIOS
    2) if I disable the Azalia audio in the BIOS and then re-enable it, it will show up on the next boot, but then disappear on the subsequent reboot

So, if the controller is disappearing on the board without any HD or software running, I have to be left with the conclusion that it is either:
    1) a design flaw in the board/ICH9R
    2) BIOS software problem - but other people are using the same BIOS with the sound working
    3) specific board issua which would mean RMA and seems the most likely scenario at this point.

I tried to find a place to turn off power control in the BIOS to see what would happen if everything was powered up, but didn't find any. I'm not sure if setting the ACPI mode to S1 would help or not, because that still leaves power saving available.

any more ideas out there anyone?

Ya probably have already, but did you very closely inspect the board for signs of damage or defects? Including the underside, and the Realtek Azalia chip? And also those green prong headers? Considering how they stacked them ontop of each other those are rather fragile. The Realtek chip should be the chip directly on the other side of the black PCI 1x slot opposite from from the battery.

It really does sound like you got a board with a defect, I can attest my own DQ6 has not once done anything like what you have been describing, and it's been under some extreme torture testing.

well, Gigabyte finally provided a useful response to my questions and agreed that's it probably a faulty chip somewhere. RMA already started.

The Egg should be shipping my replacement today and I already boxed up the old one.

    Thanks for the help, Kougar.

I'll update the thread once I get the new one.

It was a MB problem. Put together the new motherboad and audio worked right away.

Also, even though this is still the 1.0 revision and not the 1.x that may exist, there were some changes. This MB had F4 instead of F3 and it also had a "Made in Japan" battery instead of "Made in China". Also, there was a foam padding block that came in the package that help to support the heatsink.

    Thanks for the help.

Is the CMOS battery KTS branded as opposed to Mitsubishi?

    I have this failur, too.

Microsoft UAA HD Driver isn't working (Code 10) and disappears after a soft reset. I got a new Board from my vendor and now all works fine.

First I used a Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum on this board, with onboard sound disabled. But I got this krackle sound after some minutes. It was confused to change the Boxsettings from 6.1 to 5.1 and back to stop it, every 5 minutes.

I decided to change my soundsystem to onboard sound and removed the soundblaster card. But new problems started. I was happy to found this post from TeutonJon78. I made some tests described here and started conversation with my vendor.

    My System:
    Intel E6750 @ 2.66GHz
    OCZ 2x1024MB @ 333MHz (DualMode)
    GA-P35-DG6 rev 1.0 with Bios F4
    MSI 8800GTS 320 HD OC
    Seasonic S12II-500
    Windows XP Professional SP2
[ICH9R AHCI and Giga Sata AHCI enable]

Yes, it is MTS branded instead of Mitsubishi. I think I had seen pictures of other GB boards with that battery.

I didn't notice any other difference, but I wasn't really looking either.

I do have picture of the foam in the package, and I will post that some time soon.
