    Anand: On Barcelona

    http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=3002

Speaking of AMD, we were originally hoping as many others that Computex 2007 would have been the launch event for Barcelona and Agena. Unfortunately, this will not occur and the best we can hope for at this time is a Barcelona release in the latter part of Q3 at best and Agena following up in late Q4 or possibly sliding to Q1 2008 based on recently received information.
In fact, although we have seen DVT level chips running up to 2.3GHz, we understand there might be another silicon spin (maybe more) of Barcelona that is due later this month. If this occurs, then current rumors swirling around the trade show floor about the mass availablity of product not occuring until the fourth quarter might just be true. At this time the motherboard/chipset companies are in the process of locking down their designs and optimization of the BIOS for performance is just starting. Our early first looks at application benchmarks show a great deal promise for this processor series but nothing overwhelming or very exciting at this point in the game. We, as others, are hoping for some serious competition from AMD as this is good for the market whether you are an Intel or AMD fan. Let's just hope the Barcelona/Agena series performance comes up to speed quickly (along with supply) or AMD is going to be in real trouble heading into the critical Q3/Q4 buying season.

This feels so much of RD600, R600.

More respins in june...and taken it takes 12 weeks from wafer to packaged CPU it will be a finishline picture if they get it in Q3.

Comments left by some people over at anandtech is funny. "Anandtech sold out."

But that still doesn´t mean they have a final working product that they wanna launch. And hopefully its not another slideshow/estimated performance or a rerun of the POVray.

Guess there was a good reason that AMD guy sold lots of stock yesterday.

    Q3/Q4 was pretty much known.

We won't see Desktop chips in quantities till Q1 08 most likely...but server processors should be out sooner than that.

    That's why Cray said
"..that due to recent information with respect to the timing of volume parts availability, the company now believes that 2007 revenue associated with quad-core Cray XT4™ systems will likely be less than previously anticipated. Cray continues to anticipate deliveries of quad-core Cray XT4 systems and upgrades to begin during the fourth quarter of 2007; however, the timing is such that most or all of the planned acceptances, and associated revenue recognition, will likely be deferred until early 2008.
As a result of Barcelona delay , Cray will miss revenue expectations by a long shot and see more Q in red.

Cray buys a few thousands CPU/s per quarter. If they can't supply Cray , what about the rest of the market ? Or review sites will be enough for 2007 ?

Barcelona has problems , real ones and it looks like they need further respins to sort everything out. That means very late 07 or early 08.

The hopeful were anticipating Agena (dual socket madness) in Q3 and dual cores in Q4. Anandtech now says even possibly Q108 for Agena.

What happened to "dancing in the aisles" at the first ES wafers performance? Now they want a respin?

I call BS on everything I read on Barca until I see the usual suspects bench them

Anyone who doesnt is either so hopeful, they've become gullible, or so eager to knock AMD they dont care what they read

I thought it was only the INQ that reported their ES wafers being so good?

Well, it's been stated before and it's appearing to be true... making the jump to a new architecture is hard, making a die-shrink is hard, doing both at once is a recipe for delays.

AMD should go under. They don't deserve anyone's money anymore.
As quoted by LowRun......"So, we are one week past AMD's worst case scenario for BD's availability but they don't feel like communicating about the delay, I suppose AMD must be removed from the reliable sources list for AMD's products launch dates"

I'd rather have that than a single mainstream x86 CPU company controlling the entire market with any pricing scheme they want.

Actually they cant use any pricing scheme they want. Thanks to places like the EU and such. Just like monopolistic telecompanies are forced to reduce prices.

Cool, then you can pay through your ass for Intel CPU's as they scale back R&D to a slow crawl

I guarantee you that you do NOT want that. If that happened then intel would be the only one around, and without AMD to keep them coming out with faster chips at decent prices we'd all be paying hundreds for a 2GHz P4.

I'm sure you don't want that.

Why did no one say the same about intel when they sat around for 3 years with AMD in the lead?

AMD did the same intel did, sat too long on their current product and didn't tweak it much. They should have seen it coming that intel would finally wake up but they didn't, now they are paying for it. But I think like intel they will come to their senses and be more competitive on the high-end again.
