Core Solo + heatsink? No thanks... (core solo running naked inside)

Being bored, I modified a rare but crappy Core Solo 1850 processor to run at "ULV" spec.

This is just a simple hardware mod, remove BEL1 pin.
Only runs at 1GHz, with a 533MHz FSB modified to 667MHz FSB and just chugs along. This processor does not need a heatsink

how low voltage can you take it?

temp maxes out at 71C, Idle sits at ~40C... not bad at all.

Not sure how low I can mod it down. This thing uses like 5.5W. Later I will take photo of my kill-a-watt @ idle and at 100% full CPU load. Its kinda cool, only goes up a few watts

I will probably play with hardware voltage mods on the CPU later to see if I can get it much lower. Not really sure the point, it is already ULV to the max For me this is just a throw away CPU along with all the other core solo's I have sitting around.

I wouldn't call it a throwaway. My terastation has a ppc 266 and it is an amazingly useful little box. Much work can be done given 24/7 to do it in!
    I'm very impressed with 5.5W.
    Currently messing with:
    Intel DP55SB Sharpsberg
    i7-860 (stock) under a Zalman CNPS-8700NT cooler
    4x4GB Corsair Vengence @ 1600
XFX Radeon 5850 Black Edition (765, 1125 stock)
Mushkin Chronos DX 240GB and 1.5 TB WD Black
Powered by a Seasonic X-650 and stuffed into a Silverstone GD05 case

5.5w wow, its probably using less power than the chipset

5.5 is my guess, that is what other ULV core solo runs at

    U1500 2 MB L2 1.33 GHz 533 MHz 5.5W
    U1400 2 MB L2 1.20 GHz 533 MHz 5.5W
    U1300 2 MB L2 1.06 GHz 533 MHz 5.5W

    Standard core solo uses 27W

I have both, I will test the differences tomorrow.

so with a basic heatsink with no fan should do about 40-50 load.

This would make an insanely awesome HTPC rig.

    My watercooling experience

    Water
    Scythe Gentle Typhoons 120mm 1850RPM
    Thermochill PA120.3 Radiator
    Enzotech Sapphire Rev.A CPU Block
    Laing DDC 3.2
    XSPC Dual Pump Reservoir
    Primochill Pro LRT Red 1/2"
Bitspower fittings + water temp sensor

    Rig
    E8400 | 4GB HyperX PC8500 | Corsair HX620W | ATI HD4870 512MB

I see what I see, and you see what you see. I can't make you see what I see, but I can tell you what I see is not what you see. Truth is, we see what we want to see, and what we want to see is what those around us see. And what we don't see is... well, conspiracies.

he could put a Micro heatsink and it wouldn't hit 40C

yeah that explains why the Sony UX series can use these CPUs then

very light on battery and almost no cooling required

This might be a really dumb question, but what mobo are you using with that CPU?

yup, great media center board, sucks for overclocking.

if anyone has any questions about the N4L-VM DH, please ask away. It has a few quarks, but it is the best mATX media center board i've tested.

That's because the best HTPC board is the Aopen i975Xa-YDG (ATX of course).

Though the aopen board is nice, wish it was mATX!!! Besides, I got a nice pointless VIIV logo when my computer turns on

im sure it can play hd-dvd/bluray fine, and most other h.264/VC-1 media.

I doubt it could play 20mbit/sec .ts file though. .ts is pretty CPU intensive.

wow very nice could you give us a link were you picked up that thermometer from

    Awesome irev!

That is really cool to be able to run that thing not only passive, but naked. Just insane. That would be awesome for car PC's and the such.

Thanks for the thermometer link as well, I will probably purchase one soon.
