How to have different & application controlled 2D & 3D clocking with 8800???

    Hi!
I am in a mess in trying to set downclocked frequencies for desktop use with my 8800GTX and activate default stock clock while in games.

I have tried RivaTuler, ATiTool, "new" stile NVidia Control Panel profile manager and even Coolbits to manage with the profile manager of the "classic" NVidia Control Panel.

RivaTuner works good, but while in game I have continous bumping between 2D and 3D frequencies. Here are a couple of shots:

If I try to use desktop shortcuts to load the profiles manually, the GPU and RAM does not change both, but only the GPU or the RAM changes.

In ATiTool I am able to set an executalbe list with witch activate the 3D profile, but even here the GPU and RAM does not change both contemporary: only the GPU changes while the RAM stays at the default stock clock.
The new lower RAM frequency does not even get saved in a new profile: it remains at default stock even if I have set it to a different one.

In the "new" NVidia Control Panel there is a nice profile manager, but unfortunately the previously saved profile wont load because I get an error:

    nTuneServer:
    There has been problem C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\nTune\Profiles\new.nsu

Last, I have tried to load the "classic" NVidia Control Panel with Coolbits, but even here I get problems: I am not able to save new profiles.
The just disappear right after having saved.

Now.... is there a way to manage REAL dynamic overclocking??
Even application controlled would be good.

    Thank you all!

    | Asus Maximus IV Extreme | i7 2600K w/ Noctua NH-D14 | ASUS ENGTX580 DirectCU II |

Hey Pirata, I totally get your pain. I was in your boat. But today, I finally figured out a solution. At least it worked for me.

Use RivaTuner 2.0 final. Go to Driver Setting, Customize, System Settings. I'm sure you know how to do this part already.

Here's the tricky part. Toggle the drop down to 2D. Set your underclock setting. Say gpu350/ram750. Hit Test. Hit Apply. Now toggle the drop down to 3D. Again set it to your underclock settings, 350/750. Test, Apply. Now save! Call it underclock or whatever. Then hit OK to exit the panel.

Repeat the steps described in the above 2 paragraphs, except this time, set your OVERCLOCK settings. And call it something else, say overclock.

Now go ahead and create launchers for both, then create desktop shortcuts. If done successfully, you will be able to manually toggle your underclock and overclock settings, gpu AND ram!

I personally prefer the manual method, since Rivatuner or the driver or whatever seems to detect random programs and crap as 3D, and thus automatically apply the 3D settings even though I'm surfing the web. I've gotten the auto 2D/3D toggle to set the oc/uc speeds correctly before, but as I said, I hate it when it keeps OC'ing my card on desktop. Hope this helps!

    Mmmmmm..... interesting......
    I'll try this out.

The problem is that now I am under Windows Vista, and I don't know if RivaTuner works good under this os.

Any suggestions about using it on Vista??

    I couldnt get rivatuner working.

Only program that worked was ATitool

    Using an Nvidia card.. lol

Sorry I cant be of any more help.

There seem to be many many bugs with overclocking graphics in vista at the moment unfortunatley.

    WoW!!

RivaTuner 2.01 its out iwth VISTA support!!

I'll try this right away and let you know..

    EDIT!!

I have tried your solution and everything works just fine with last RT & Vista!!!!!!

I have made also some fan profiles following the Marc's 8800 Fan Speed Guide and now I manage 2D and 3D clock by manual and fan speed automatically referring to the GPU Core temperature.

    Tnx RivaTuner team!!!!
