Asus working on unlocked multi for retail Core 2 Duo & 975X chipsets

Has anyone seen this article from AnandTech, the quote below is from the last page of the article "Our Thoughts".

ASUS has told us they are not finished with this "Conroe Unlock" feature and that they are working on BIOS revisions to also bring Core 2 Duo unlock to 975X chipset motherboards. We have seen hardware modifications to the Intel 975 BadAxe that allow unlocking, and it would be great if ASUS can accomplish the same with a simple 975 BIOS upgrade, as they have on the P5B Deluxe.

    In BIOS, yes. Otherwise, no.
A great lesson (in pictures) from M1cutzu. No need to understand Romanian
    Translation follows:
How to lock and change the Conroe multiplier in 4 simple steps
You need to change two values in register 0X000001A0, 2>1 for locking down the multiplier (in order not to go down to 6x in idle mode) and 5>4 in order to allow manual change.

"Even more exciting is that ASUS says they have found a way to unlock up or down most Conroe chips. This will be a significant new feature that is highly desired by many Core 2 Duo buyers. It didn't take but a few minutes for us to get the new BIOS flashed and a Core 2 Duo chip mounted to check this out."
    I think that's interesting. If this a true .......

Im sorry bud this time its not EIST, now the story is out I can confirm that the unlock is not performed with EIST control at all...regards the max overclock on the board I have a feeling they are implementing the 1333 clockgen strap and tweaking the chipset strap around it.
Got a problem with your OCZ product....?

thinking that other then C2D xtreme will have unlock multi upwards is like awaiting from money to rain from the sky.

intel haven't alowed that kind of things since 486 or the first pentiums

Agreed. This is simple marketing by Asus. They make a statement that they don't exactly have to deliver on (and so then its not false advertising) and they get more people buying their MBs because of this BS.

Allowed. That still does not 100% prevent exploits from generation to generation. Although I'm sure new steppings will kill any exploit that exists quickly.

I'm looking forward to Asus coming out with a new BIOS for the i975X boards for unlocked lower multipliers but i really doubt there will be anything that unlocks them upwards.

if they did it for the P5B Deluxe in later bios, they certainly can do it for their 975X chipset boards...i have the Pro and so far, no multi to adjust in ANY direction!

Yes. I've yet to get the option in BIOS to go DOWN even.

Yeah this is one of the few times, I have to say, Anand should pull that article. They fell for some (at best) miscommunicated marketing and (at worst) outright lies from Asus.

    It is not accurate.

I'm pretty sure they had unlocked multipliers for quite a while on the pentiums actually. My P166 had unlocked multipliers, so instead of 5x33 I could run it at 6x30. Actually I'm pretty sure almost all the Pentium 1's just had the multiplier controlled on the boards via jumpers.

At any rate, Intel might have made things a little easier to bypass on the C2D. After all, it's like some kind of enthusiast fantasy Plus all the rich enthusiasts will hopefully have bought some x6800's in the meantime before the lock is broken.

Or...Asus could just be full of it. But I seriously doubt they'd go and tell Anandtech that they've gotten the multiplier to unlock upwards if it isn't true. Although I'm still very confused exactly which chips this is supposed to work on lol.

This sounds like BS to me too. If they could do it, they would have already. So this would mean I'm still gonna hit the same voltage/MHz wall (3.2GHz to 3.4GHz) with my E6600 at 8x or 7x, right? Just higher FSB?

    1) How many average system builders know that Intel has permalocked processors for quite some time?
    2) How many of those average builders read anand?
    3) Anybody want to start a pool for which e-tailer will run out of Asus P965 boards first? I'll give 1.0000000001:1 for Newegg
