How did you lap it? on a flat piece of glass with jewlers rouge, or piece of wet and dry and a flat surface?

Well watercooling wont ALWAYS help you get a way better overclock then air. It really depends on the system being overclocked, and the quality of the water cooling system. Also, when you are overvolting your components, having a watercooler will make your hardware have longer life most definitely.

The other plus, which is the main reason I have one, is that with a good fan controller, you can keep your system almost silent even on load.

what if you [carefully] sanded all the way through the IHS
youd have some warning when you hit the material between IHS and core
youd have to go sloooow but youd eventually end up with a lapped core (which ive seen before) AND a CPU that still fit the mounting system

Have you seen C2D white paper, seems thermal control circuit kicks in around 60 deg C @ 75 watts... http://download.intel.com/design/pro...s/31327801.pdf

Well, at least he'll not be doing any RMA if it does break. For those who OC, and kill their CPU and then RMA it? Well, shame on them.

Great job on the lapping. I've been looking for wet and dry grit for ages but can't find any in the UK. Anyone got any links?
The next time you're having a bad day, imagine this:
    You're a siamese twin.
Your brother, attached at your shoulder, is gay.
    You're not.
He has a date coming over tonight.
    You only have one ass.

I lapped mine too... first with 600 grit then with 1500, though I didn't get all the way to the copper on the entire sink, only the raised areas such as the outsides and the very middle.. I may redo it just for peace of mind

Load temps on my E6400 running 400x8 (3.2 ghz) dropped from 57 degrees to 43 degrees with fresh AS5 and room temp of 24 degrees. Mine really needed lapping. The corners were up higher then the rest of the sink, and contact was poor, now it's much better, though I may redo it and go right through so the entire surface is pure copper.

I used masking tape and the black cover that came with the chip to cover up all componants of the sink except the top of the IHS. Easy as pie, only took me about 30 minutes.

I lapped my 6800 a little bit and the first thing you notice is the outer edges are visably higher than the core area, so at least this helps flatten it out. I do think that even if you coould remove the spreader entirely, there would be sink seating problems as the frame of the socket is already higher than I would like and even a med size sink would sit on some caps in all likelyhood. In any case, the closer to the core the better the temps as a general rule. I haven't seen a spreader yet that actually helped cooling. they are there to avoid crushing only.
