Giga DS3 locking PIO mode on DVD drives & IRQ Issues

ok i have been noticing that my mouse gets all goofy whenever i do something with a cdrom.
i tried burning a movie last night and the dvd burner kept going burn wait burn wait burn wait. it took forever to burn this disk.

so today i open device manager and i find my DVD burner and DVD Reader are running in PIO mode.
    WTF!

ok so i tell it DMA Mode if Available.
    reboot and no change.

i power down and unplug the dvd drives and reboot again.
let windows sit for a minute and then power down again and hook back up the drives. but only the Master (NEC 3550a Burner)
go back into windows and the dvd is STILL in PIO mode.
ok so i power down again and change the jumper to Cable Select. (wth i'll try it)
back in device manager,,, still PIO mode.

is ANYONE else with the DS3 DQ4 or DQ6 mobo's seeing their DVD drives in PIO mode ?

this bios doesnt allow you to set the DMA mode of the device like every other bios. (i have to admit its got alot of features in the bios but manual DMA/UDMA modes is missing along with ACPI APIC modes. and those are key features that i surely hope Gigabyte implements in the near future)

Can you guys please report in with a simple yes or no.
or if it was PIO mode and now its DMA how did you make it work?

Lastly and i mentioned this in another thread.
Please go into device manager, click View--->Resources by Type and Expand the IRQ Section.

Please make note of your devices and what IRQ's they are on.
I have ALOT of MAJOR system devices sitting on only a few IRQ's.
i do NOT believe this motherboard has full implemented ACPI 2.0. its there as the IRQ's go above 17 but its not allocating IRQ's Properly.

With windows XP there is only 2 ways to change your IRQ Settings
    Device Manager
    Expand Computer
    Right Clik ACPI Compliant PC
or for those with Dual Cores ACPI Miltiprocessor PC
    Update Driver
Choose to install the driver manually and then go thru the list until you find the Standard PC or Standard Multiprocessor PC
    install that driver reboot.
** do this at your own risk, it will immediately remove all devies from device manager (after you reboot) and reinstall everything and reallocate the IRQ's.
This isnt a good thing as its not a clean driver uninstall and reinstall. but you can also opt to do that manually if you wish.

    2nd

Reload windows and at the vlue screen after the cd boots up immediately start tapping F5 a few times. In a few minutes you will see the option ofr Different types of PC's. Simply chose Standard PC or Standard Multiprocessor PC. Dont chose anything else or it will screw everything.

once windows is reloaded it will now NOT have many of the power features.
most noteably is the ability to turn off your PC by going to Start, Shut Down, Turn Off. the system will just sit there and tell you to shut off the PC just like old Win98 and Win95 Used to.
This isnt a bad thing and i personally havent done this for a while so i dont know how all this new hardware would react. But i dont think there should be any issues.

    anyways.
report back fellas about the IRQ placements and the PIO mode.

    Thx!

    L

i see TeamAqua is having the same issue.

PLEASE more people report in on this.

if this is a widespread issue i will contact gigabyte.
they can not allow that many devices to be put onto one IRQ.
thats actually worse than how WIndows 98 did IRQ's .

come on guys take 30 seconds and do this for me.

if i can compile enough users with this issue IRQ or PIO mode i will go to gigabyte and push for them to fix this.

the bios is handling the IRQ's all fooked up and it needs to be addressed

My drives are recognised as scsi drives for some reason
No idea how to check if they are running in PIO mode or not

Oh yeah also regarding the IRQ issue, i have the same thing with my setup, but I think this has been around for a while, I remember most of my old setups had many things sharing the same irq.

ok well this is 100% surrounding the gigabyte raid.

leaving raid enabled but using a standard non raid SATA drive i loaded windows. of course windows did not see the raid drives.
the dvdroms were then running DMA 2...... (i slip streamed the gigabyte sata/raid drivers into the cd) hindsite ... i would not have done this as its the gigabyte drivers that are causing all of the issues i believe.

i then installed my Audigy Drivers rebooted, i went back into device manager and the stupid DVD drive(s) are now back into PIO mode......!!!!!!????

i then rebooted and turned off the raid. left it on IDE mode.

now for some whacky reason windows can now see the raid drives..... as raid... even without having Enabled in the bios.
and to double check i browsed that RAID drive and yes its 100% working.
not sure how this is possible but ok.. sure...

now oddly enough the 3rd Primary and Secondary IDE Controllers are missing from device manager.
so i expand the DVD/CD section and there are my NEC Burner and the Pioneer DVD-Rom BUT... they are now listed as a SCSI device...????!!!

i have no way to check if its in PIO mode(cuz it thinks its a scsi drive) but judging by my mouse they are NOT in PIO mode.
Maybe ill install nero and use the info tool to see what it says...

    odd stuff indeed

this is the first board that i have owned that put SO MANY devices on 1 irq..

usually you would see 3 things on 1 irq max unless it was just USB controllers. or MINOR devices on the major devices maybe MAYBE then you would see 4 on 1 irq..

but this board is shoving the majority of all the devices on 2 irq's 16 and 19

this is bad bad bad the bios isnt allocating IRQ's properly...

Have you installed any Ubisoft or Codemasters games?

Edit: Don't burn any DVD's or CD's while you have this problem, as it kills DVD burners.

No, my setup doesnt have any games installed at all. I think when I installed the gigabyte drivers in windows it classified it as a scsi controller, and my drives attached to it as scsi drives for some reason.

Raid being seen as a SCSI isn't new, windows has done that forever, if a drive is running in PIO mode you'll bloody know about it mate. Tranfer speed for PIO isn't even measured in MB/s it's measured in KB/s.
Also recent chipsets don't support PIO in hardware so the work is done in software, your CPU take the entire load while trying to emulate a chipset from the late 80's.

    hahah starforce rules!!!!
    for destroying your DVD Drives!!!
funny you should bring that up, one of the 2 guys who spearheaded the entire push to get starforce removed and out of the industry is my neighbor.
    'Soulcommander'

Iconyu you really need to go back and read thru this instead of just scimming and reading the last post.

this has nothing to do with them being SCSI devices under the Gigabyte Controller.
and we arent talking about RAID being SCSI we are talking about...
bah.. you go read it.... treat yourself...

and yes burning in PIO mode is bad...
reading in PIO mode isnt really too bad but even the proper bios allows DVD's to use DMA under DOS .

im hopeful Gigabyte will addres this along with the IRQ placements.

speaking of gigabyte.... do we not have anyone from gigabyte who frequents XS.. wow i find that hard to believe.

I wasn't skimming, I was directly answering the last post. He was worried that SCSI thing might be a issue, and couldn't tell if his drives were working in PIO mode. I was just putting his mind at rest.
Of course its obvious none of the hard drives are in PIO, as PIO's transfer rates are so low you'd think you were downloading your OS from the internet while booting.

I think my drives are not running in PIO mode, as when i copied files from my cdrom to my hdd (on the same IDE cable) the cpu usage stays < 5%

if they are listed as a SCSI device, then it should be fine.

since my other install is RAID i have no way of testing my no raid theory on it.

but if this is true then .....

i don't have one of these boards, but i had the chance to test an intel DP965LT board and it had the same problem. i think the windows default driver is unable to do the job right und there are no drivers for the used marvell controller.

iirc most boards use a jmicron controller, which is also not well known for good enduser driver support.

imo intel did the wrong thing with removing pata support from the ich8.

no actually they arent... see how many key devices you have sitting on 16.

to check pio mode go back to device manager, expand the ATA/ATAPI Controller, then go to the 3rd Primary IDE and double click it, then go to advanced.

the only reason they would be in PIO mode is if you have the bios set to use RAID. if its set to use IDE or AHCI it wont be like that. (i havent confirmed yet if AHCI is like that but i will shortly)

also.. i just confirmed. it is jmicron RAID controller causing this.
if you set it as IDE it will be ok but reboot set it as raid and then go check your dvd drives again they will be in PIO mode.

this is bad and retarded. PIO mode will kill a drive and burning is impossible in PIO mode.

and ATAPI was removed from the ICH8 WTF!! you have gotta be f'ing kidding me,, who the fvk in their right mind removes the primary source of DVD/CD drives means to communicate with your PC,, wtf is intel thinking!!!

Why? SATA has been on every Intel chipset for nearly four years, how long did ISA stay on motherboards after PCI showed it's face? The whole point of bringing in a new standard is to remove the old one.

Because as stated, how many DVD drives are running through the SATA interface?
Only a couple, and they are the top of the line models which cost approximately £70+
    Very few people have them.

EVERY hard drive maker has both SATA and IDE models. It's nothing to make a SATA DVD drive, even Samsung have them and they suck for optical. Its just that companies have been overpricing them. MSI, Samsung and Plextor have all done one.
Tell me why changing the controller board on a DVD drive to take a SATA connection is so hard or why it doubles the price.
When a hard drive company switches from IDE to SATA it costs maybe a extra £5 on top. But when Plextor does it, a extra £20, no wonder theres been no one buying them and there's been no market penitration.
For three years these companies have been pushing higher write speeds and Dual Layer, and none of them have thought about maybe going SATA for the main stream.
So yes, three years ago these companies looked at SATA and thought 'bugger it'. The writing has been on the wall for a long time and still no mainstream sata dvd writers.

Newegg has, for less than $15, adapters that will allow you to run your PATA DVD drive from a SATA port. While not perfect, it's certainly an option. I don't know why on Earth DVD manufacturers have been dragging their feet with this.
