New Core 2 Duo Boards! From Computex

Directly outside of Intel’s lair in Hall 4 here at Computex, you will find an entire wall packed with new motherboards, many supporting the upcoming Intel Core 2 Duo processor. We managed a few moments to snap pictures of our favorites, from ABIT, ASUS, ECS, EPoX, Foxconn, Gigabyte, Intel, and MSI

Intel officially introduced the Intel® P965 Express Chipset, formerly code-named "Broadwater," and said future versions, including one with graphics built in, will ship over the next two months. Combined, the Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Intel P965 Express Chipset will enable breakthrough PC performance, greater power efficiency, quieter systems and theatre-like sound quality, among other benefits.

To significantly increase PC performance, the chipset incorporates Intel® Fast Memory Access, an updated Memory Controller Hub backbone architecture that optimizes the system's memory bandwidth. It also supports DDR2 or double-data rate computer memory with data transfer speeds up to 800 MHz, enabling speedy access to files and a highly responsive PC. Chandrasekher also discussed a future integrated graphics chipset, called the G965 Express Chipset. This product will include a new feature called Intel® Clear Video Technology, which enhances high-definition video playback including those from personal video recorders and digital camcorders for sharper image viewing quality. All of the 965 Express chipsets enable users to add a second external drive to a PC for extra data protection, Intel® High Definition Audio for theater-like sound quality and Intel® Quiet System Technology to reduce system noise and heat for a much quieter, yet higher-performing PC.

These chipsets will form the basis of systems supporting the Intel® Viiv™ Technology and Intel vPRO™ Technology platforms that will be increasingly powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Chandrasekher also disclosed that Intel will introduce the Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme processor at speeds of 2.93 Megahertz in July, and a faster 3.2 megahertz version later in the year.

Is the 965 chipset shipping already? I'm just trying to figure out when to expect these boards in retail. I have some funds that I have to spend by the 30th and I was hoping to get a conroe compatible motherboard.

No Heat Pipes on Gigabyte *DQ6??

Their website shows a heat pipe cooling arrangement but this image doesn't.

I'm curious if they abandoned it at the last minute??

I see all the new boards reall do have caps very close to the socket . And just when i was about to design my own first waterblock.

Maybe they are low profiled, but fat chanse of that

Yeah, I don't like that at all. At least they're solid caps, not the liquid ones, so they won't leak.

Caps don't seem to be any closer than the 975X boards..

What makes me wonder is why some boards have passive cooling on the power components, and some don't.

For instance, compare the ABIT board to the ECS/MSI/FOXCONN board.

Is the power draw on these boards just significantly lower than the 975X boards, thus they don't need the heatsinks?

Hrm, I guess Intel won't be reclaiming the performance crown from AMD afterall.

Intel already reclaimed the performance crown with it's ES E6600 processor, not to mention the X6800. They don't need the 3.2Mhz part to let Conroe own the FX-62.
