Confirm this for me, is it fake? Someone with better eyes need to see are those four or five shaders. I'm seeing five shaders. The leaked Cayman slides that showed the VLIW4 uarch shows four shaders, all of the same colours. This one has five, one with a lesser colour, if I am right.

Damn what's up with all the fakes out there anyway.

    No real slides until 15th.

    That one is real.

The 4d shaders are the darker red squares. Each small dark red square = 4 shaders. Each quad of those red squares = an ALU. Each horizontal grouping of 4 ALUs = 1 SIMD.
So 24 SIMDs total. 384ALUs total. Each SIMD has 64 shaders or 16 ALUs. Each ALU has 16 shaders.

This is a high level architecture overview, doesn't show each individual shader.

For reference look at the Cypress overview here.
Cypress has 20SIMDs with the same number of ALUs per SIMD, 16. But each ALU consists of 80 5d shaders rather than Cayman's 64 4d.

nope my 5970 is safe a single 580 does nothing for me, two 580s are the other hand are a little dangerous If the 580 was $350 then they would be worth it.

i mean think about it, if your in the same tdp envelope as a dual gpu card almost, then theres not gonna be a big perf boost by going dualgpu, so then you pretty much kill the dualgpu option... since ati continues to rely on dual gpu, that caps their highest single gpu cards to be around 200W, and again more than 2000sps would have meant way low clocks and wouldnt have been much faster than 2000sps...

2000 sps sounds a bout right for 400mm2, thats a 25% boost, then add a 15% ipc boost, which i think is generous, and you got a 40% boost over a 5870, which puts it in 580 territory. might beat it, but not notably...

and after all, justifying a 580 is already hard to do with the lack of nice dx11 games out there...
so a monster cayman wouldnt really have been useful would it?
Have you seen the benchmarks for metro 2033 or BF2:BC? I guess you don't game at 2560x1600, it takes two 580s to make certain DX11 games playable in single player. This reminds me of 3DFX saying 30fps is fast enough At stock The 5870 can do 212watts of power and the 4890 does 227 watts of power, so the 6970 doing 250 watts of power is not that hard to believe. Why else would they be coming out with a way to tune the power draw of the card? Why is is so hard to believe that some things are possible?

edit: I'm not referring to the sps just total power draw. I'm not sure what cayman's efficiency will be like yet, but I do believe it will be much better than the weak 6870.

Remember the 30fps vs 60fps demo 3DFX did (1/2 of the screen at 30fps, other half at 60fps)? I dont remember the timing of that, but it could have been in repsonse to the "30fps is enough" thing (technically it is enough for many people, it just sucks when you need more performance and you're scraping the bottom of the barrel already).

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

AMD HD 6950 works at 800MHz

here's some FUD for the fires

    http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/ite...orks-at-800mhz

    1408 SPs, 200W TDP

We managed to score more details regarding the upcoming AMD Cayman based cards. By the looks of it, some things have changed since the last slides, which we saw back in November. According to the latest specifications, the HD 6950 ended up clocked at 800MHz for the GPU and has 1408 Stream Processors, 22 SIMDs (two SIMDs less than the HD 6970) and 88 Texture Units.

The info that we now have looks solid and it appears to be what AMD has been telling its partners and selected press about its upcoming Cayman based HD 6970 and the HD 6950 cards. The HD 6950 is capable of delivering 2.25 TFLOPs of compute power and uses the VLIW4 shader architecture, same as the HD 6970.

The GDDR5 memory on HD 6950 cards ended up clocked at 1250MHz (5.0Gbps) and paired up with a 256-bit memory interface, which is a bit lower than the 5.5Gbps on the HD 6970. The interesting thing is that both cards will be equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

The TDP, something that has been quite a debatable topic recently, is set at 200W. Note that 200W is AMD's PowerTune Maximum Power whereas typical gaming power is set at 140W. Idle TDP is set at 20W, same as the HD 6970. The card needs two 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors and has two DVI, two mini-DP and an HDMI output.

The card has already found its way to some of the press guys, and should launch on 15th of December.

I don't remember demo exactly, but I remember their reasoning... it's part of the reason why they stopped innovating IMO. It was the first time I laughed at 3DFX sadly not the last

The slides look authentic minus one detail: the hell is SBP2M watermarked on the bottom right, and why does the bottom where the NDA disclaimer is usually put look like something got blurred/erased

Does that website mark up prices on launch or are they pretty consistent?

Would be a good idea to see how we should expect pricing out here

That's what I wanted to add, these prices are reliable. There might be some minor adjustments but this seems to be how the 'stock' cards will end up.

Well the lack of a date + AMD Confidential thing + the blur makes it iffy, as if someone took the original leaked 6900 slides and simply filled in the TBA parts

Good to hear. It appears that the cards will perform ~ those levels unless AMD has gone insane on pricing

you don't remember anything. I hope nobody listened to you and got any wrong ideas.

if you want to remember something, remember this: 3dfx went bankrupt because it failed to deliver competitive products for multiple product cycles in a row. failure to execute. period.

3dfx was the first company to say you should be playing at 60fps, not 30fps.

Very disappointed with the specs, and WTF did ATI decrease the shader count from 1600 to 1536? WTF that doesn't make any sense.... I would have been happy if it was at 1920 like earlier rumours said, the only good thing that it comes with 2GB of VRAM.

With the saved die space by using VLIW4,I see a little chance of XT having less than 1600SP as some websites are reporting. The chip is reportedly bigger than Cypress,so it's logical it has more than 1600 VLIW4 SPs. All this confusion is culminating in people posting even more fake slides, fake benchmarks and generating BW towards their "news sites".

I dunno, fake slides or not, Cayman is only ~15% bigger than Cypress. Expecting 50% more SIMD's, even if they're 10% smaller, just doesn't quite fit in 15% more - esp. when you consider you have to include TMU's for each SIMD, and that the graphics engine and ROPS all got overhauled

Granted, 15% seems too big for just 20% more SIMD's as well

How many times does this need to be said

    1536 / 4 = 384 > 1600 / 5 = 320

So in truth, 1536 SP's will perform better than the old 1600 SP's, in everything but synthetics.. but then again, unless you're doing hardcore benching, you probably won't notice that
