Will do...I have my fingers crossed that the lower end Preslers scale as well or almost as well as all of the 955XE OCs we've been seeing. I'd LOVE to see 5.5-6.0GHz out of this thing (15x400FSB ). I am going to run it on air first for a few hours just to test and will then slap on the Chilly1 unit

Buy a i975x motherboard from asus (P5WD2-E Premium) and a Presler 930, I could tell you that you won't be dissapointed.
    Intel FTW!

Thanks for the quick reply. These 9xx's look like some awsome chips for encodeing.

The Intel 975x motherboards only support Crossfire and not SLi.

How is the Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe board compared to the the Intel 975x chipset motherboard if I want to use the Intel Presler 955XE CPu?

    http://www.asus.com.tw/products3.asp...174;%20Edition

Since Intel 975x motherboard don't support SLI then I will have to use a Nforce 4 motherboard for the Presler 955XE.

If not then I will have to go for the Athlon FX 60.

Well the results from retail Preslers are starting to come in and its not looking good. Most of them are having a great deal of trouble getting to 4ghz on stock voltage and to be stable at that speed need significant voltage boosts.

5ghz on a retail presler short of an EE is not possible. Most people will be looking at 4.5 at best

The following information is taken from Ross @ OCforums:

    ^^ 1.42v @ 4ghz idle

I was really hoping 4GHz before having to jack up the Vc (+.125V), but I know the Presler Anandtech used in their preview wouldn't even go over 3.6 without bumping up the Vc. The difference there is that their ES was stable at 4.25 w/1.41Vc. I haven't tried mine higher than 4GHz yet since tapping it up to 1.425V (stable on all benches so far), but I will definitely do that before I put phase on...maybe it will go 4.2 there.

Yes, the stock Intel HSF is the same garbage they've been including with the Prescotts...nothing new.

I've never burned-in a proc before upping Vc in my life and I haven't blown one up or had one die yet either...it's not like I go nuts with Vc though either.

I had to bump the Vc to 1.425V @ 4.0GHz to get it pass everything, but so far there, it's passed all these in a row without a reboot in between anything, SpeedFan logging during all and all my normal start-up stuff running (ie. normal boot, didn't close anything to free resources):
    PCMark05
    Cinebench
    3D Mark 01
    3D Mark 03
    3D Mark 05
    SPi 1M
    SPi 8M
and SPi 32M is running as I write this.

Most benches peak load temps are in the 54-58C range, but the killer Cinebench multi-CPU rendering gets nuts at 65-67C peak...that's the only one that gets anywhere near that temp and remember my mobo has no load droop, so unmodded boards shouldn't get quite as high.

Since I am testing stability and not going for scores, I won't post any yet (3Ds look like they will be nicer than my 670 and I am not running CF right now), but I have to take care of some things and come back to this. If I can contain myself, I will do some air benches for scores when I get back to it, but I may just have to slap the phase on go really go to work

the 930 not looking good because it won't overclock more than 1,000mhz on the "stock" Vcore (+ stock HSF)?

I'd say the 930 looks good, overclocked by 1000mhz on a mere 1.42v with stock HSF and a 40c idle, and 250fsbx15 on "stock" voltage for a safe 24/7, not that 1.42v isn't safe, operation.

BTW, I'd wait for someone w/o a moded board to give some "other" readings in Vcore and perhaps use a third party HSF, as posted by ROSS:
Anyone getting one these that's going to run on air, do yourself a favor and get a good 120mm cooler right off the bat...the Intel HSF is a joke.
I also like this part of the thread: "Most of them are having a great deal of trouble" , when so far it's been ROSS the ONLY ONE that's posted results on a Presler. Kinda nulls the point. And a 950 + P5ND2 SLI doesn't count at all, that's another null point.

As a matter of fact, yes. The temps on his setup were fine the only limiting factor was his vcore. You can get smithfield to clock past 4ghz with those temps. The fact the he is struggeling to get to 4ghz with a .1v increase is not good.

That would be like Smithfield not being able to run at 4ghz on 1.5v

The point I am making is that once again there is a significant difference between what people post here on the ESs and what is actually on the shelves. This is almost identical to what we saw when Winchester came out.

As for more results I will know either tommorow or monday since I have a 920 on order

I think cpu-z only shows cache for the one core, the chip does have 2x 2MB level 2 cache.

Ross from OC forums has the only lower-end Presler results I've seen. One person and one chip is not exactly a representitive sample. We shouldn't be drawing ANY conclusions until we see more results.

I do want to see 930 on i975x before I make up my mind for sure. I'm pretty sure a 930 Presler will hit 4ghz on just slightly more then stock vcore.
