what does this mean... I understand the iop341 part but not the 10% part.
does he mean only using 10 of the platter which is the outside for better seeking and read/write? if so how do you do it?

IF 500GB and 750GB'ers are indeed 334GB/platter then these would be ideal (if priced right) as short stroked drive is naturally faster compared to full stroked drive.

i used to work as one of the administrative leads at a legal/complaint department of a big company. and such stupid lil words are key when it comes to legal matters.
Them using the word MAX. cause mean everyting. it can mean it uses 334GB platters wich at max have a usable sapce of 334GB per platter (or less) or that it uses at max 334GB platters and possible also smaller.

Depending to wich site you go the entire lineup says it.
and like XS janus said its just their way to keep everything legal.

And most likely its simply a piece of data that was copied to the data of every HD.

To feck it all up even more:
Most likely Samsung will this year come with the F2 wich will offer 1.5TB and more.

I think it's time the HD companies should start disclosing platter size in specs AND on retail boxes, instead of making users run around Googling (or guessing) what it is. I mean the 5000KS is a great example - in the retail space, there's pretty much no way to tell if you're getting hosed with the 4 platter vs. the 3 platter.

No reason we should be playing this guessing game bull. I think this is why having a totally separate SKU and model, the 6400AAKS is great for WD. I'm just amazed Samsung isn't doing the same though.

Faster read rates but slower seek time.

So:

1: Faster read / write / copy times
2: Quieter
3: Boot times roughly the same

with the discussion of single vs multiple platter and the platter size, could someone educate me on the importance of this?

Reliability, power, heat, peformance. Fewer platters means fewer heads that can crash. Fewer heads and actuator arms means less weight/power to move them, less heat from less power, and the possibility* for marginally better seek time. Higher density platters yield higher transfer rates.

* not always the case for whatever reason.
