Did anybody else notice how the Intel Pentium D performed? I know most of you will say "it's CRAP man... AMD rulez!!!" but it really didn't perfrom that bad if you factor in cost.

AMD A64 X2 3800+ = ~$350
Intel Pentium D 820 = ~$235

Seems like the 820 is about 7%-%15 slower than the 3800+ but it's a whole lot cheaper. And even better, the 830 is ~ $320. I doubt it will perform better than the 3800+ X2 but it should be close.

Not really a fanboy of either Intel or AMD but just thought those results were interesting(and probably pretty decent news for Intel fanboys ).

Yeah the intel dual cores certainly don't have any price advantage once you build the entire computer. I was looking at building a cheap DC computer for my office and made some lists of parts. A decent intel 955 board was over 2x as much as a DFI NF4 where I live.

For Intel, Yonah dual core might be the killer, until then, stick with AMD X2

Very true about upgrade path/costs. I'm looking into a new dual core rig so I'd be having to plunk down cash on all new components anyway.

I was just surprised at the D's performance because all I've heard is how bad it is. Those Cinebench numbers don't really look bad to me at all though. (Cinebench is a great multi-thread test imho.)

At any rate, $350 for a dual AMD is sure tempting. The $550 price tag for the X2 4200+ made me re-think my purchase a few weeks ago. $350 is definitely a step in the right direction.

They compared the 830 against it in the anandtech review and the x2 3800+ wins in all but one of the 31 tests.

I'm going to grab an Intel dually in a week and try it out. See how it stacks up to my 4200 both at stock and OC'd (the x2 can bench as high as 2.85 GHz). I will pick up a 3800 as well, just to see what's what..

Well I was going to wait till I save up enough money for the 4400 but I might just grab this 3800. This system I'm building is only a temporary fix until next year when socket M2 comes out.

Since I'm 90% sure an X2 3800 is my temporary fix, I might as well save a bit more money and not get the Ballistix memory I had my heart set on.

I read somewhere that they(the reviewers) got a 700MHZ overclock on this 3800. Not bad.

3800+@ 2.7 (2.0 stock) on the stock HSF.

Yeah, it looks like a good deal to me.

And to the guy that was saying it looked like intel was creaming AMD in those benchies. I wonder how an overclocked to 2.5-2.7 vs. 820 overclocked would do...add in AMD's advantage in games and such, I think the 3800+'s a winner, especially since they work in any 939 board, upgrading is easy. Also, they're barely any extra money over a decent single core cpu, like a 3700+ SD. Definately worth it for future-proofing when dual core games and apps roll around, or roughing it out through M2 until the the 2007 DDR3 socket, which I intend to do.

I hope 300x10 phase is commonplace...That's would sound good to me. That's awesome value.
