    Damn I ran in the past my A64 at 75C (I turned off watercooling pump) and really was a toast but it is still alive....
    I put 1.984Volts at Albatron for 2 hours and is still alive...
    Your fan was working???
    I know that mainboards switch off automatically when temp is high...

    I cant test mobo, PSU seems ok using black n green trick.

    Like others say, seems wierd it burnt when theres the 70'c/auto shutdown on.

    That's a dead short in the chip that got it hot i imagine. It might be worth contacting AMD about... Maybe there was a prob with that CPU run.

    Need to look up the pin out on the A64 and see what that area of pins are for. I don't think it was overheating looks to me like you had too much current through that area of the chip. Maybe running at 3.4vdimm or more ??

    Actually thats some sort of soot/carbon caused by the burn on the proc. Most of it came off but some appears to be in the socket.

    Hmm I can RMA to the shop I bought it from. Not sure if mobo is toasted though.

    Huhh, every now and then the high vdimm killing CPUs theory surfaces then someone come and say that it's been proven wrong time ago and that vdimm is not related in any way to CPU.
    Any final word on this anyone?

    vdimm may not, but if VTT tracks with vdimm, it's possible. vtt is the voltage in the traces between the cpu and the mem, AFAIK. if this is too high, well, obviously something can go.


    HOWEVER!!!! i have had the same thing happen to about 8 cpu's now, mind you all of mine were 754's. run at stock, and it dies. i stopped overclocking my cpu's because of it, for a while. But they still died. kinda...the two i have kept, a 2600+, and a 3000+, both work using limited amts of mem...the 2600+ 256mb, the 3000+, 512. funny how for each cpu it's exactly half of the installed ram before they died. votlage spikes in the memory-area of the pc seems to be a common problem, but as to it's cause i do not know. I replaced every single component in my machine, and still cpu's died. A UPS didn't help either.



    AMD RMA'ed the first five CPU's, before saying it MUST be my motherboard.


    I used to buy mid-grade parts...but becasue of these problems, i ended up with so much left over hardware, that once it was all sold, i had enough cash for buy top-grade stuff. What a crock. Oh, adn those 2 cpu's....both have been running for the past 90 and 108 days 100% full load...256mb and 512mb. Never thrown a WU...

    pulled the top on the 300+, you can see a visable problem in the silicon.
