Yeah but there seems to be, uh, two kinds of burn in. One kind that helps even when running i.e. prime95, and one that you need to force the chip to barely run (too little voltage) and do that for a long period.

I'm curious to know who has chips that are temperature limited and who has chips that are simply limited by a wall, because i think i am the owner of one of the latter types.

Have you tried a different mobo? It may not be your cpu My 3200+ 0515 apaw definately wasn't limited by a "wall"

No, i haven't. And i saw your APAW, one of the best overclocks in these threads btw, gave me even greater expectations for mine. That's why i made a post about a week ago, explaining my "wall" in great detail to determine if it was the chip or "something else" (possibly the mobo as you commented). However, the results were breif and to the point: "Your chip has hit its limit, live with it" and so i did. I would like to try another motherboard but i don't have money bursting out of my pockets... i would have LOVED to use the DFI NF4 UltraD, however i have an AGP graphics card and it doesn't suit me to get a new PCI-E card. Anyone want to let me borrow a board?

Sorry I must have missed your plea for help earlier I also was in the same predicament when I previewed one of the first venice cpu's, but in the end I broke down and picked myself up a DFI board. TBH, it's been one of the biggest PIA's I've ever owned, but in the end there's no other board like it on the market when it runs right....

Tried to use cpu burn-in and then lower vcore a little bit Cornelious?
No I haven't.....I might try to give it a shot. I did notice that after messing with the overclock for long enough I did start to see some gains, hitting some of the lower OC's at slightly lower voltages....but I haven't done any actual burning in with this thing. I was gonna put my comp back in the freezer to emulate some Peltier load temps on the chip to see how much past 2.9Ghz I can hit...but on second thought.....might just get to that point with the cpu where Prime fails in a couple minutes and push it for a good couple days solid.

Is this the kind of thing where (to a certain degree) you could find that point, burnin for 2 or 3 days straight.....and slowly move up the vcore by .025v and hit a new limit and burn in for a few more days, and get a little farther...or is this a sort of one time thing that needs to just be done once at that low vcore limit?

I'm curious to know who has chips that are temperature limited and who has chips that are simply limited by a wall
Again, I haven't taken the time to burn my chip in (properly) but as of now I'm merely temperature limited. I can do 300x9 1:1 at 1.72v in windows.....and hit 320x9 1:1 for roughly 2.9GHz at the same voltage or slightly less with my load temps down about 20-25C in the freezer. I'm gonna start on some proper burnin tonight to see how much more I can squeeze out of this thing.

You know, I just noticed that you guys are placing a lot of emphasis on temps rather than voltages. I'll tell you right now, that's the wrong way to think. If you're gonna kill a cpu, it will be more likely that it will die because of too high a Vcore as opposed to too high of a temp. Yes, the two are related, but think of it this way - I've managed to kill a couple of cpu's: one under a 226W pelt @ -20C and one under a mach2 @ -40C......

Here is my results for today with 0517 BPEW 0057:

    - 1.50V 3103MHz
    - 1.55V 3156MHz
    - 1.60V 3201MHz
    - 1.65V 3231MHz
    - 1.70V 3246MHz <-- I stopped here, gonna sleep now...

BTW, pretty happy with that chip, works great, hope it gonna fly under DI..

For some reason my Winnie ran about 3 - 5ΒΊC cooler on this same board, with this same cooler. Idle I am never lower than 34 or 35ΒΊC, and under load I have seen(*gulp) 58 - 60ΒΊC running Prime at 2799 with 1.588v...I also happen to think my Neo2 wouldn't know a proper temperature reading if it were on fire. I like to think it's off because that 58 - 60ΒΊC scares the crap out of me, but who knows...Just out of curiousity, what would TOO much voltage be for these new cores, about the same as the Winnie? I'm guessing that over 1.7v is roughly a no-no?
All cpu's will have different tolerances, but I'd say 1.7 would be pushing it for 24/7 use for most Venice cores. Of course there will be a few exceptions, but for the most part I'd only experiment in the 1.7 - 1.75 range for short benches. Temps are something that become relative from core to core - Just take a look at the clawhammer 3500+'s. Those things run hot enough to cook an egg on, but that's just how hot they're supposed to run......

I dunno, depends on how "long term" you're talking about I guess...I see a lot of people with Venice, Winny, and FX chips running at 1.8v or so.....

Woa....whose got their venices @ 1.8? I don't think I've even seen 1 person. Sure as hell, I was even too scared to push that much Vcore into my 3200+

Wel, depending on what kind of cooling you're dealing with, and how sensitive your chip is to votlages...that extra voltage might come into play. I can run SuperPi 32M at 300x9 at 1.72v in windows.....but in the end, I have to push it to 1.792v in windows for 302x9.....but it's temperature dependant, because in the freezer at 15-20C load temps, i can do 2.85GHz+ at 1.72v easily.....

Ummm, so you're saying that @ 1.792Vcore, you're able to run your venice @ 2 more FSb than @ 1.72? If it was me, I don't think it would be worth risking a cpu for that 18 mhz. (And also, that 2 extra fsb could have been due to other factors besides your additional vcore.) Yes, an OC has something to do with temps in relation to Vcore, but even @ low temps, too much Vcore can still kill a cpu. Please don't say that you've seen "many" venices @ 1.8 cuz there are some people that will try that just because they read that. BTW, this was the max stable vcore I with my cpu:

I was told (but don't know if its true or not) that for chips made on IBM's strained sillicone process raising the vcore 0.1v above what they are designed for halves the chips lifetime. Is this true becuase if it is then nearly all our venices are going to die pretty soon

Nice bro.....yeah, now that I've done my half-assed burn-in and BIOS work I'm gonna put my comp back in the freezer tonight. Having it in the deepfreeze emulates very closely the temps I'd be hitting with a nice sized Pelt.....and before I had done any of this work, and with weird memory timings, I was able to do about 2.86GHz at 1.72v.....now I need less voltage for my OC's and have much more stability all the way up to 300x9....so we'll see if I can get in some 1M runs at 2.9GHz+ tonight to see what I'd gain from the Pelt setup and how much the temps effect my OC now that I've worked with things more.

I doubt it, but it's tough to say.....these chips haven't been around long enough for people to realise the actual FULL lifetime of them with stock voltage....considering most CPU's are sposed to last years and years...so we'll see.

How exaclty do you burn in a venice?? Im curious.. did it improve your overclock? Give me the details of what to do, worth a shot me thinks.

It basically came after I had done a LOT of 32M testing at different clock speeds, scaling from 205htt all the way up to 300....redoing many of them along the way as they would sometimes fail.

Can't say it really gained me a lot of OC....but I never took the time to do much "before" testing. I did end up needed less voltage for my overclocks though.

I'm starting at 290x9 (where I KNOW is very stable) with 1.72v in windows.....going to run Prime for an hour, step down .025v, run another hour.....get to the lowest stable voltage, and then run Prime whenever i can on and off, until i can take the time to run it for 48 hours straight...and then I'll bump the HTT by 1. Each time, I will run Prime on and off whenver I can, until i can take the time to run a full 48 hours, essentially burning in the chip at the lowest possible voltage, at each 1htt increment possible....I'm gonna have this chip for awhile, might as well use the time to milk it for everything I can.
