That theory can be tested. As soon as someone can get a Celeron - Dothan model 350j with 1mb cache up to 2.6Ghz at 200mhz fsb ( has x13 multiplier), we can compare them (vs. FX-55) clock for clock, same mem speed and both dual channel.

My old benching Asus P4C800 is now used for gaming and I was wondering how to pep it up as it only has a P4 3GHz Northwood in it, this looks like the answer.

However, what is the Kyosen VDIMM mod and why is it needed for stability ? When you say needed for stability do you mean at normal overclocks, say 2Ghz to 2.4Ghz or are you now talking up at your 2.8-3Ghz overclocking ?

Of course, for gaming I would just be running around 2Ghz+

In think I need to do some background reading, I have not looked at intel for years, I am so rusty.

kyosen mod aka connecting 3.3V rail to Vdimm directly. A fellow overclocker made a little mistake while modding the Vdimm and because of this it would give very unstable Vdimm and also totally wrong Vdimm values (2.55V from bios would be 2.95V in reality, even with the vmod disconnected)

Andy, for a S478 upgrade just get one of these 730 chips and set it to 200x12=2.4GHz for some great gaming performance Should be very doable and given the very low heat output of these chips it will be very silent too.

Thanks for the info, with my memory I will not need any mod I don't think due to the 533 FSB speed as default, gives some headroom.

Just one more question, on the web it does not mention the P4C4800 as being applicable but only 865, but I guess from your experiments it is, but they also mention a special BIOS for the M, from your comments I think you are just using the standard BIOS and just turning down vcore for cpu and making sure it boots at 200Mhz ? Do the 875 features have to be turned off, such as PAT ?

This takes me back to my trusty BX motherboard where I bought a 100Mhz PIII and overclocked it to the same value as the highly expensive 133Mhz FSB PIII's .. 650Mhz to 933+ MHz ..those were the days .. that was an another great chipset, the BX.

This is making my mouth water, my gaming machine has been worrying me for a while, this will give it some new legs. Thanks for bringing it up in the 3dmark forum, I never go in the Intel one ! Good luck with the 40k + macci.

Be sure to get the 730 and not the 1.6Ghz 725 model. That one has a 16x mult.

The latest offical ASUS P4C800 BIOS supports the adapter and Dothan chips so no tricks need to be made. The bios doesn't have any Vcore options when the adapter is used so it will use the correct voltage from the start. Basically for the 1.6GHz 730 model (stock 12x133) you would set up the BIOS as you would when useing a 2.4GHz P4 800FSB CPU FSB to 200, DDR400, TURBO etc.
Most if not all Pentium M Dothans will do over 2.4GHz aircooled (some may need higher than default Vcore, but its not a problem).

What kind of clock could you get aircooled with the 730 (stable)

it would run SuperPi 8M test at 2800MHz aircooled, but this was around +10C ambient. So for normal use I'd say 2650-2700MHz.

Depends on what your lookings for - for LN2 runs a 740 or 750 might be better as they offer 13 and 14 multipliers for some higher overall CPU speed w/ fast 1:1 RAM settings.
For aircooled rigs the 730 is optimal.

I'll bench my 875 with latest Asus BIOS to get a benchmark tonight and then buy the parts soon.

I did the Vcore mod (50k VR between those soldering points). This allows up to 1.568V. When combined w/ VID-mod (connect VID4 pin to Vss pin = default voltage 1.568V) even higher voltage can be obtained.
