Hello you guys !
I had a chance to play with a P4 XE 840 on a Intel reference motherboard for it.
I do not have any screenshots yet (will post them today) but i would like to say something about this processor.
Its a MONSTER. The amount of heat it generates is ENORMOUS !!!!
At 4.2ghz 1.5V the prometeia was almost overloaded, but still worked (im referring to 2 cores loaded - POV ray), the condenser was scorching hot, i have never seen any phase change system so hot. Fans @ 2200rpm.
When only 1 core was used (SUPER PI) there were no problems, prommy handled it w/o any problems, just like a regular prescott.
At 4.4ghz 1.5V / 2 cores loaded we have passed the border line and temps skyrocketed to -23C, POV ray hanged. If i had a chance to mod it i think i could force her to work with such load. Still one core works ok, prommy's fine
After this any clocking is hell on earth... The system wont boot @ 23 multi = 4.6ghz, 200mhz fsb.
As you might guess the bios is preety f**ked up, there are o/c options but they dont always work as set. The multi, VID can me normally set (multis 14-60, 1 step), Vcore all the way up to 1.6V. The fsb can be set at 533mhz, 800mhz, 1066mhz. Later it can be increased by a certain amout of precentages. The MCH voltage can be set higher all the way up to 1.75V if i remember corectly.
The memory can be set at 333,400, 533, 666, 800mhz (treat this as dividers), timings were set at 4-3-3-12, 2V. 266mhz up in the bios, 666mhz mem divider and the fsb was incresed by %, thats our memory speed.
After some fondling with the bios i got her up to 4.6ghz SUPER PI stable with a lousy time of 11min 30s, we didnt have a system prepared for benching but we will have today. The mem timings are really sloppy, as well as clocks on them. We can run pov ray at this speed but the prometeia is very quickly overloaded.
Settings were:
1066mhz fsb, 16 multi, 1.6V, 666mhz mem divider, +8% fsb, 4-3-3-12 @ 2V 2gb Patriot DDR2.
Screenies and more pics today!
Me installing the prommy on the 840.
System running in the bios.
Am i the firt to put phase change on a XE 840?
