Talking oldie but goldie: Abit Kx7 333R @ 242 FSB

    Hi folks,

together with my friend Redflash we got bored and decided to build an oldschool rig. We grabbed some old hardware and began to overclock.

    - Abit Kx7 333R
    - Thunderbird 1200 B
    - 256 MB TwinMos/Winbond BH5
    - Western Digial WD400
    - Antec TruePower 430
    - S3 Trio 64V
    - OCZ DDR-Booster

CPU and NB is watercooled, VCore mod done but nothing else. Without Booster we were stable at 226 fsb, with Booster set to 3.2 - 3.5 we could hit this:

    CPU-Z Validation

Up to 241 everything works fine in windows, everything above was hard to validate. Something is limiting us, don´t know whether it´s the harddisk or it´s the S3 graphiccard.

Timings are set to 2-2-2-5-2T + 4 Bank Interleaving + CPU Command Decode FAST. But lowering timings doesn´t help. I also played around with voltages, but no better results.

That´s it for now. We will try again in a few weeks, maybe with better cooling.

Still have a love for the KX7, was my first real overclocking board/system. Maxed at 210 fsb, with some crappy corsair.....

wow, nice. I had the NF-7, so I'm not sure. Runs daily at 220. Max is around 230 (not sure y). Nice. Get some better CPU cooling and get it to 250.

someone needs to stuff one of these wonder chip 2600+ mobiles onto a kx7 and see what kind of numbers they can pull off..

Yeah, it would be great to see what you can get a mobile to do on one of these. I always have had a love for the old t-bird series. My first AMD cpu, I loved it so much. My t-bird 1.3B did 150x10 with stock volts, prime stable and all.

Currently running in my main rig: xp-m 2500+

This CPU does 2054 MHz @ 1.36 volt primestable, aircooled.

We will throw in this processor in a few weeks. And maybe we can find an AGP-card which can handle a agp frequencie of 94 mhz (235 fsb). It would be very cool to have some 3d-numbers at this speed.

Kx7 was my second board from Abit, it replaced my Kt7a-Raid. I had a lot of fun in 2002 with the Kx7, my Radeon 9700 and my 1600+. I could hit 205 x 9 all day stable. And I still love this board.

I had several NF7-s too but never achieved such fsb.

Wow, cool fsb. My Kr7a (bought to have some fun during NF7-s period ) only did 200 fsb for benching.

To slow cpu speed and 2T. IIRC we had ~2.7 GB/s at 222 x 5.5.

By the way: Does anybody know the WR with Kt333? 242 shouldn´t be far away, isn´t it?

gj jens! the kt266a and kt333 (kt266a+1/5 divider ) were performing really nicely, almost the same as an nforce2 at the same fsb!

you should go for a turbo pll and im sure you could hit even higher clocks!
and you could bench 3d at those clocks with a normal agp card

About 240 ish. My 8K3A+ was able to bench near there too, but didnt get as good bandwidth as the KX7's.. Wish I still had that board... hmmm

Shoul do the high multi mod to the CPU (for 13x and high multi) then run slightly lower FSB with TRCD and TRP as low as you can manage (will probably need about 3.8v to mem @ 200mhz 2-1-1-5 for example), that will keep the AGP speed out of the picture somewhat anyways...

With Kx7 2-2-2-5 ist lowest you can set in Bios. And I don´t know any program to set tighter timings in windows. Or does WCPREDIT help?

    @GravediggA:

I know this screenshot very well. It was the reason to try 240+.

Do your mod and have some fun...

    @saaya:

I never played around with turbo plls. So I don´t know much about this. But iirc a turbo pll doesn´t affect memory clock. Am I right?

yes, WCPREDIT can adjust them, but I dont know or have the files required to do it..

    Hehe..

.. Can't find any working pages for KX7-Mods .. all down.. maybe i give it a try with some Samsung TCCC, but then it is not that funny as with LL.

    We will see.

(anyway .. i think there was some reason, that u sold this KX7 ... im right? .. *g* with short tests it can't handle clocks over 200MHz)

    What cpu did you use?

All my Kx7 did at least 205 fsb. So there´s something wrong.

Before I sold you one Kx7 I did short tests with two boards. There were no differences. The other Abit is running in my brother´s rig and it does at least 225 with our setup.

So your board can do better, I´m sure.

Use modded B6 Bios, disable SpreadSpectrum and play around with drive strenght. And don´t forget Load Optimized Defaults.

Thx, to be honest, i give the board no time...

Primestable it was on 180ish. Will give it a try later today!

Edit: CPU(s) can do over 250MHz FSB.

I had a 2500+ XP-M with a crappy Globalwin HS/Fan running on an old POS Gigabyte KT266 board that had no vcore adjustments nor 1/5 divider @2.4GHz, had to mod the CPU bridge directly with a conductive pen to increase the voltage to 1.85v and the default multiplier to 18x.

It wasn't long until one of the boards caps fell off, probably due to heat meltdown , couldn't reach anything above 205MHz stable on the FSB, 242MHz is simply amazing!
