Entry level dual-core Opterons to be priced same as high-end single-core parts

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will begin pricing its dual-core Opteron processors at the same level as its high-end single-core versions, Taiwan-based motherboard makers indicated.

The entry-level Opteron 865 processor will be priced at US$1,514, the same level as the high-end single-core Opteron 852, while the 870 will be priced at US$2,149 and the 875 will be priced at US$2,649, according to the motherboard makers.

Quotes for the 200 and 100 series will follow similar patters, the makers noted.

According to Hector Ruiz, CEO and Chairman of AMD, the company will launch the Opteron dual-core processors on April 21. The dual-core Opteron 800 and 200 series are expected this quarter and the 100 series will hit the market in the third quarter. Both the Opteron 200 and 800 series will probably be introduced at speeds of 1.80GHz, 2.0GHz and 2.20GHz with 95W thermal design power (TDP).

hmmm so they will supply the customers that pay most for the chips first, makes sence
"cheapest" dual core chips will come a few months later and even then they will cost 650$? ouch!

    I don't get it:

    Dual core Opteron 270 (2.0GHZ) - 1,051$
    Single core Opteron 246 (2.0GHz) - 328$

I see a BIG difference. What am I missing?

And the AMD fans thought they would be getting a break on dual core technology... Can't forget about corporate greed.

Compare high-end single core with low-end dual core.
So compare the price between the 270 and the 252. Should be about the same.

    Well:

    Dual core 270 (2.0GHz) Opteron - 1,051$
    Single core 252 (2.6GHz) Opteron - 825$

Still a big difference, imo. For heck's sake, it's costing more than 3 x single core 246s!

You can't compare DC 2xx with SD 2xx!! It isn't apples to apples.

Remember, DC 2xx (or DC 8xx or DC 1xx) are TWO CORES. SC is ONE CORE hehe.

So, if you want to build a dual system, you buy 1 DC 1xx or 2 SC 2xx; if you want to build a quad system, you buy 2 DC 2xx or 4 SC 8xx; if you want to build a 8-way system, you buy 4 DC 8xx, or 8 SC 8xx

yeah, but it would have made more sense if they were to price them slightly more or same as two single core processor at the same speed.

I thought dual core was supposed to be an advancement in performance, not a different, more expensive way to tile cores on a motherboard.

Even so, atm it's cheaper to tile them 'the old way'. Why would I buy dual cores then?! I for one will wait until AMD come to their senses and the prices will drop. Might be a long wait, though .

An example. You want to build a 4-way server. So, you have two options (boards and Optys 846, Monarch prices):

    4x Opteron 846 2,0GHz: $2,708
Quad board (Tyan Thunder K8QS Pro S4882UG2NR): $1,455
    Total: $4,163

    OR

    2x Opteron 270 2,0GHz: $2,102
Dual board (Tyan Thunder K8S Pro S2882UG3NR): $492
    Total: $2,594

    So a 4-way server with 2 DC 270 + dual board is $1,569 cheaper than 4 SC 846 + quad board.

    Which option would you choose?

    Option no. 3!

    2x Opteron 270 2,0GHz: $656 (not $2,102)
Dual board (Tyan Thunder K8S Pro S2882UG3NR): $492
    Total: $1,148

Ok ok, I understood your point, but nevertheless, that's what I would pay for dual cores! Might have to wait a bit until prices drop that much, though .

Will the new Opteron 865 & 870 be 940 pin? What speed are they at? Will they benchmark better than the FX55 or 57?
AMD FX-57, ATi EXPRESS 200 Motherboard, 1GB TCCD, 74GB Raptors in 0-Raid, RADEON X850 XT Platinum PCI Express, Logitech Z-5500 Speakers, Samsung 191T+

highly doubted, these are made to run multiple thing smoothly not put all the CPU power to one cause, most banchies arent multithreaded either.
