    Epox 8RDA+ with a Prometeia cooling

    Hi

    I have a Prometeia cooling and want to buy a Epox 8RDA+ motherboard. I read some forums this bord will not work with a Prometeia cooling. It wont post. I think its something about the tempurature. maby it cant read temperature below 0 C

    Anyone can confirm this??

    i know someone the has the 8rda+ and prometia and everything works fine.

    The Epox mobo worked fine for me with the Prometeia. I used all the bios avalible at that time (two weeks ago)

    I will also confirm from testing that the 8RDA+ works fine with the Prometeia Have no worries at all. I will tell you upfront that the temp readings are far from accurate and read on the high side compared to my KD7. It's in the temp calibrations soley and not a totally accurate representation of realtime temps.

    I`m also know someone whit this combo and he has problems starting up. Whit a normal heatsink no problems but when he instals the vaporiser the mobo have a no go. Nothing, even the led isn`t going on when the prometeia give`s the reset free.??
    Do you know what the problem can be?

    Randi,

    It appears that all newer Epox boards are using the in-socket thermister for temp measurements. I get really high temps on my 8K5A2 using a prom (12 deg C).

    Do you have any idea (from your KD7 experience) how much the on-chip diode temp differs from the in-socket thermister when using a prom. I expect the in-socket reading to be higher but how much higher would be anyones guess.

    Ok..this is talking purely ABIT here....but my KX7 at 1.65v was reading around -24c approximately with the in socket thermister touching the bottom of the cpu and -45c on the Evap. On the KD7 the XP's diode is reading a consistent -40c with -45c at the Evaporator. My opinion on EPoX calibrations if they are using the in socket is that it's very poor. I also had above 0c readings on my 8RDA+ which I know could not be right. Same voltage and speeds.

    A.P. : I's not sure what could be causing the issue...it sounds like a short of some sort...but I'm not sure. I've never encountered that issue with it in my Prom. Make sure the power and reset plugs are plugged inproperly also.

    thanks for that.

    Looks like I'll have to live with the crappy temp reading from this epox board.

    Considered doing an on-chip diode reader mod (like Hoots) but this mobo doesnt have any SMBus pins and I am not sure whether the BIOS will interfere with the readings as it uses the on-chip diode for CPU overheat protection.

    the 8rda+ is NOT the temp diode the et guy at AOA confirmed that. it uses a temp sensor built into the socket that measures the temperature of the pins. the colder your cpu becomes, the less accurate it is.

    it is HORRIBLE at reading temps. it says that my case temp is 5C lower than what it really is and my cpu temp is 4c lower than what it really is (using a hardware monitor)

    wait a minute? The Nforce2 boards also dont read the OnDie Temp?

    Eve my KT-333 MB does that, another reason to pick a different board, does the abit board read on die temp?

    this just appears to be an Epox thing. The latest boards (after 8K3A) have reverted to using the in-socket thermister after some bad feedback from users about getting really high temps from the on-chip diode reading on the 8K3A. Some dolt from marketing probably decided it would be better this way.

    It is true... Epox removed On-Die probe support and removed the hardware required to read the on-die probe after a high number of users complaining their CPU was running abnormally hot in their boards... Rather than explaining the situation to them and letting the end user deal, they just removed support for that probe...

    Comparing temps currently to temps with my KD7-Raid, the difference between core and surface temps is about 5 degrees between socket and on-die probe, but it all depends how well the core itself is being cooled. With the abit my surface would be at 32 degrees, and the core at 36... however on the 8K5A3+, my surface temp is around 38, so am guessing my core is around 42...

    You will get the same readings from the 8K5A2+ and the 8RDA+... they both use the under-socket sensor.

    all epox boards after the 8k3a+ uses the on die temp diode for shot down feature only.
    temps in bios or windows apps are in socket thermister temps!!!!

    well my 8k3a+ reads my agoia 1600+ @ 1830 MHZ 1.825V at 40C idle if i switch MBM5 to read from the socket its drops about 12C-15C

    Thats a pretty big difference...No wonder i always thought my temps sucked! Oh well guess thats not reason enough to buy a different MB now that they have that cool bios out.

    Thats reason enough when using a prom.

    Since I am a first time prom user I aint overly confident in mounting the cooling head to the CPU. The only real way of checking that the mounting is good is by comparing core temps with other people. My 8K5A2 reads 12 deg C (in-socket) (evap temp -34, ambient 27 deg C) so I have no real way of telling if I installed the prom correctly or its just a stupid temp reading.

    Does the Epox 8RDA+ undervolt or overvolt ??
    What Vcore you get if you set 2.2V in your bios??
