    Fortron 530W repair

    lo there,
as some of you already know, from the original Fortron 530W thread, my en PSU had died on me, & i can't RMA it.
so i'll try to 'repair' it!
any way, this is the problem:
    > if i run the PSU alone, & measure the +12.0v/+5.0v/+3.3v i get some very very low values on the +12.0v & +5.0v ones. the +3.3v isn't that bad. (+11.01v / +3.7v / +3.31v)
    > if i run the PSU with some 'load', talking about about 6 old/bad HDD's & 2 floppy drives, i get a 'better results' like: +11.88v / +5.3v / +3.3v .
    > now here is the most interesting part, if i run the same as the above, but with a 333MHz Celli & Slot1 MoBo & 128MB SDRAM, i get the following: +7v / +0.3v / +2.8v. & if i turn the system OFF, via MoBo, i get -5.0v on all rails!

so can anyone of you tell me what's going on?! i didn't use the sucka more than 48H & it did fry my NF7-S/FX5600 !!!!!

    thanks in advance.

PS, i suspect that one of the main Caps is dead. take a look:

those bulges on the tops of those caps seems pretty normal for that kinda cap with the plastic housing...your readings may just be way way off...

BTW, before the PSU "died", did you play with both, the OVP potentiometers and the ones for volateg adjustment?

For me, this looks more like a short circuit somewhere, involving the -5V rail and perhaps some major adjustment of the pots.

Edit: OK, just read your first posting in the Fortron 530W thread. Looks like the PSU is just plain dead more or less. The caps look normal from your pics. nothing suspicious there. But erhaps there's a short circuit on the PCB, as I already said. Nothing more thatI can think of.

any way, is there any way we could find the circuit diagram for this POS?! or it's a waste...

Some are allowed, it depends on what it is, and what its for. If your link had contained pertinent facts to the specific topic at hand it would not have been edited. However just pointing a link to your forum served little purpose, and offered nothing other then a reference to your forums..

Those caps look ok to me.

The only way you might have killed them might be giving them reverse polarity, but if that was the case I would expect more damage and leakage.

The problem with PSU is that unless you know exactly how they work they are very hard to fix as such I cant offer any real advice on how to fix it.

I have fixed PSU in the past but more by trial and error than anything...

enzoR bud, i know that it's ONLY, BUT:
    > PSU @ 80usd
    > shipping to Israel @ 40usd
    > tax in Israel @ 1.17*(80+40)=140usd which i can buy me a nice 480W Tagan

besides, BB's comment is 100% true. but honestly, i have no problem to ditch this POS to the garbage, but the only thing i'm pissed of is that i didn't use it!
conclusion: NO FSP Products for me anymore, especially after the REAL NICE treatment i'v got from the s @ FSP's technical/customer support.

There is a circuit diagram/description for a 200w PSU here. I've used this to repair a few 300W PSU's before. The basic layout shouldn't be too different to higher rated PSU's, so it should give a basic idea of what to look for.
IMO, those caps do look a bit dodgy, but I doubt that they would cause the sort of problems you are experiencing. Faulty smothing capacitors should only produce unstable voltages and not the sort of problem you are experiencing.
