    Exclamation nvidia cancels nv50!

    http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20034

i told you guys theres something wrong with nvidia canceling nv48... now they even canceled nv50!

    a. early nv50 performence sucked?
    b. early nv60 simulations showed a much better performence and nvidia believes it can build an nv60 chip with current manufacturing technology?

    hmmmmm

Well, I didn't know anything about the cards specs, so to me it's a canned mystical number. Does this mean no nv40 refresh? I know that's what nV48 was. Hard to believe they'd drop it already with such strong clock for clock performance.

"Nvidia still strongly believes that SLI is something that will become very important in the future."

Thats why. I am guessing the nv48 and nv50 were just refreshes of the current nv45 with higher clocks and Nvidia has SLI to compete with ATI so they arent worried and they have a while before a single ati offer can match two 6800 ultras in SLI and by the time that happens NV will bring out the nv60 and wait again till ati can match two nv60, and on, and on.

I'm guessing Nvidia won't waste their time with rehashes of existing technology since SLI will do just fine. Frankly, I think it's a good move considering the 6800 Ultra clock for clock can hold its own against the X850XT PE (probably not for overclockers though because synthetic benchies favor ATI... but for the common enthusiast). I also like it better because Nvidia won't have that many cards to choose from, whereas ATI has so many choices amidst both the X800 and X850 that it sometimes gets confusing... for example... the X800XL outperforming the X850 Pro... despite the cost differences.

All in all, both companies are doing their best to gain market attention, but Nvidia made a smart move by refocusing their efforts rather than restoring existing technology.

I think it is a mistake, they are betting too much on SLi

99% of people who want the "Fastest" card, will now HAVE to get ATi, there is no choice, before they were neck and neck, and now ATi has the fastest cause of speed refreshes

Yes, SLi is fast but most people will only be buying one card, so it looks like ATi will be considered the fastest, and the SLi pony is going to get shot down when ATi launches AMR, then what happens? they have a 10% faster card, AND 20% faster SLI
    Let the OC'ing begin!

IF nvidia relies on sli you can all kiss nvidia goodbye

    history repeating itself anybody?

and what you guys who are so confident in sli seem to forget, atis next gen card will def beat two 6800U cards in sli!
"oh yeah? but by then nvidia will have a next gen card in sli as well wich will beat atis next gen card!" you might say
but the next gen card from ati will also work in sli...

so unless nvidia gets a good next gen card out they are screwed, even sli wont save them... thats what brought 3dfx down...

But NV50 is a good "name", despite the NVxx and Rxxx are never really used.. But perhaps this is just the well known "5-crisis" like middle aged women :P

See the Geforce5 that never came and the Pentium5, which has also yet to appear.. Perhaps there is something to these fives.. Oh, well, forget it

Slightly odd. Considering no one really even has any details about the NV50.

They may be relying on SLI too much. Unless they're waiting for ATI to come out with AMR / R520 and then 3 months later come out of nowhere with some NV60 that has like 64 pipes or something

But it isn't like they won't not have anything on the market, so they must have something going on. Sneaky nVidia!

Man... you guys discredit SLI.... but when AMR comes out it's the ?
And then Nvidia cancels the NV50 and its a mistake because ATI managed to come out with a card that is 20 MHz more on the vcore? haha... man

First of all... the X850XT PE is nothing but a rehash and judging from the benchies it barely beats the regular X800 XTPE... and to you guys that's the FASTEST card...in case you didn't know.. that extra 20 MHz takes a double slot cooler which you guys hated because only Nvidia used it... and suddenly now ATI has it and it's alright.

Then ATI comes out with more products than Maybeline, and while Nvidia cancels a rehash that isn't even necessary, you dismiss it because without this rehash to compete with the "reigning X850XT PE" Nvidia is "screwed."

Haha.. man.. that's comedy.... you honestly think Nvidia is not working on something new while ATI's R520 will dominate and destroy SLI by itself and then will regin supreme once more AMR exists. The fact of the matter is.... you're speculating over vaporware. We've seen what Nvidia could do because we actually have proof of it... and even ATI's latest card can't even come close.... Nvidia is ahead of the game presently... why does everyone think they're just gonna let themselves trail behind in the future? This is Nvidia we're talking about..... too much speculation here..

Because of the pace of the industry hardware developers usually are designing 3/4 product cycles in advance. At this moment the NV60, 70 and 80 are surely all in devlopment. I guess they just had a breakthrough with the NV60, and decided to skip the 50.

That could be it, maybe the nv60 costs less to make for example. a midrange nv60 could be as good as a high end nv50 but cost less and this means more profit for nvidia. Thus what they need to do is maybe release the 24 pipe verson at 400MHz for now then in 6 months a 32 pipe at 500MHz

but the next gen card from ati will also work in sli...
To quote Saaya's answer to another question:
    BINGO !!!!!
so they must have something going on. Sneaky nVidia!
Ofcourse, no multi-million dollar corporation sits perfectly still while it has such serious competition..>We're expecting Nvidia to respond, and that's why we're complaining, so that Nvidia takes notice. Without the fierece competition between the two companies, you wouldnt be able to see the gains from next gen cards of both companies compared to their previous gen cards....Competition is good for the consumer, and it would a BIG mistake to underestimate Nvidia, but right now, the outlook isnt good.

First of all... the X850XT PE is nothing but a rehash and judging from the benchies it barely beats the regular X800 XTPE... and to you guys that's the FASTEST card...
We know its a rehash, and we've said its a rehash, you dont win a prize for knowing that...but the fact remains, it IS the fastest card out there. When Michael Schumacher wins his races, the 2nd place guy doesnt come up and say..."Uh...you were only 1/10th of a second faster, I'm just as good as you are !!". The fact is, no matter how small the increase, the X850XT PE is the Single Most Powerful Video Card on the market right now...Overall that is.

in case you didn't know.. that extra 20 MHz takes a double slot cooler which you guys hated because only Nvidia used it... and suddenly now ATI has it and it's alright.
No one's happy about the dual slot and the dusbuster. We criticized Nvidia for it and we did it to ATi as well, but If you have SERIOUS qualms about the dual slot solution looky here :

Gecube has branded an X850XT with "Uniwise" single slot cooling...So it CAN be done but most ppl arent really too ticked off with the dual slots because its just an extra cooling measure. Also, the ATI silencer 4 for X800s also isnt single slot, so the industry has learned to overlook that now due to the heating issues in both ATI and Nvidia cards.

and while Nvidia cancels a rehash that isn't even necessary
That would be true two days ago when Nvidia said it didnt need the NV48, a rehashed, as you said, version of the 6800U. However, we've been hearing about the R520 for years now and the NV50 was Nvidia's only response to it. I dont think you can seriously say that the NV50 (nvidia's NEXT GEN card) was unnecessary...Its EXACTLY as if ATI cancellend the R520....It would mean almost be a sign of the end of the ENTIRE graphics industry practically.

and even ATI's latest card can't even come close
True, but it certainly is getting there and not every game supports SLI and those that dont (there are just as many that dont as there that do, if not more that dont). And in those games that SLI is not supported, the Price/Performance ratio just plain sucks.

Come to think of it, game developers will NEVER take SLI into consideration as a system requirement for their games because of the low market for SLI. High-end single cards will still be able to have performance that excels the graphics the designers were using to create the game LOL.

Nvidia is ahead of the game presently...
No one's denying that...but with the decisions its making recently, it seems that will only be true for the short-term.
This is Nvidia we're talking about..... too much speculation here..
There is a difference between speculation and discussion, and believe me I've learned to recognize that difference

Its already funny now if you think about it....

The X850XT isnt really much and even if the R430s are good OCers, nothing ATI does until AMR or R520 comes out will significantly change the industry's landscape, however, if all it does at minimum is keep me pumped up until the next big thing comes along, then I'd be happy if ATi and Nvidia started coming out with X860, 6850, X870, 6860, etc....every two weeks until their next gen "technologies" are released.

BTW, With so much speculation on Nvidia and Intel hooking up, I think we have to consider Nvidia going for dual core gpus as a possibility

i said exactly the same thing about seing GPU's becoming dual core, thats my theory, Nvidia will work on dual core, and finish off ATI once and for all.

why else would they scrap NV50? they MUST be working on something alot better, they wouldnt scrap it for no good reason.

also i heard someone say matrox is coming back to the fold with its Parhelia 2 chipset, only a rumour so dunno if its true.

very very doubtful. the high end market is only a small one, compared to the OEM computers, such as dell, gateway, etc...

ati has the xbox2, and ps3(i think?? or is it the next gamecube?) either way, nvidia, even IF it did pull ahead, would not so easily finish off ati. and like was said here, or somewhere else, i cant remember, its not like ati is JUST working on r520. they are also probably working on a generation or two after that, as well... one of which could possibly also contain some type of dual core chip.

dont be so fast to write something off. intel seemed to have a lead over AMD, between the xp2x00+ and xp3200+, in mostly everything except possibly gaming, and AMD is still around, even though they were the underdog, AND playing catch up.

besides, XGI even has dual core/ dual GPU cards (although with crappy drivers) do you think ATI isn't working on dual core GPU's also?

    They all are

    lol

I hope they compete eachother to the limit so prices will drop and performance fo up.

and for all I care Nvidea comes out with a NV 6000000000000000000000
    with 99 999 999 pipelines and SM 4000000000000000 I still don't care :p
whatever card/ company is in lead by the time I need to upgrade, that card i'll buy :p simple as that.

Although I must say I do like ati for being the underdog.
Nvidea is the "big man" because it's around for so long. Ati is around for a while also but not like Nvidea so I'm a bit in favor of ATI but if tomorrow ATI does something stupid and Nvidea has the lead again i'll buy Nvidea, simple as that
