    23k possible?

I have gotten 22478 as my best result(not picked, all benched in one random test) yet in 3DMark01 with these settings:

    3700+ @ 2.9ghz (1.5v x %110), CL2 1:1 242mhz(3.1v), and 9700 Pro @ 380/340mhz (1.5v). I can't get anymore out of the 9700Pro, no matter the voltage, as I get artifacts. Can't raise the clocks any higher, no matter what I do. The thing is I use WinXP(mess) and Win2k should be better with A64.

Would I be able to cross 23k on a clean Win2k install and these settings? Would it be a low 23k score or mid one?

I can get the CPU to do 3ghz, but my RAM can't do CL2 250mhz 1:1 and I score a bit lower with those overall settings(CL3 on ram).

What would it take to do +23k under WinXP with these specs? If I shut down ZA and managed and cleaned WinXP, would that possibly do the trick?

Yes, a clean OS always helps. Closing extranneous services and explorer.exe when you run the bench will also free up RAM. Maybe try using A64Tweaker to tighten memory latencies a bit, too.

What cooling are u using for your 9700? it seems like that isn't a very good overclock on the gfx card to me, considering your cpu o/c.

I'll download the tweaker and see what it can do.

I just raised the HTT/LDT multiplier(?) to x3 with the same settings and I believe those 23k can be done under WinXP. I got 22768, nothing differently than multiplier thing change.

Kanavit - The 9700P has a stock cooler and has never really been a good OCer. It did however do somewhat better on this DFI NF3 board. Usually I could only get it to 360/340 with 1.7v and now it does 380/340 at 0.2v less. Shame increasing the voltage doesn't work now. It is because of crap cooling, right?

Still amazed how much faster the A64 @ 2.9ghz is over my old P4C @ 3.9ghz.

Fresh install should get you a few more points, I think 23k is possible, just try to tweak it to the max

I'm guessing by 1.5v on the 9700p your talking about the AGP voltage as the default vgpu is 1.6v?
If it were mine i would swap out the stock cooler for atleast a CPU HSF and voltmod the GPU vcore to 1.7v. That should get atleast 400-420MHz out of the core.
I had a pair of powercolor 9700p's one with a weak core and decent memory that i put a retail copper XP2500+ HSF unit on and vmodded to 1.7v that ran all day at 420 afterwards artifact free with 360 ram. The other one ran 450 core with the same voltage and cooler but 355 on the ram.

your gonna need win2k to break 23k. very nice cpu clocks by the way, I will try for 21k but I am too cpu limited for more, maybe with a winchester ill break 23k too

BTW, what ram do you have on it? If it's samsung 2.8 i can suggest something that will give you free and easy points.

Poki - I'll see if I can change the cooling on the 9700P and mod it. Depends upon when I get my 6800U or X800XT. I know, it would break 23 and even 23.5 in WinXP if I could match your "bad" 420/360 OC. I get ~20500 without any OC on the VPU, so the 2200 pts left are from those 75/30mhz extra alone on the VPU. The extra power from the "bad" mod result should give ~1000 pts extra, I think. That is too tempting not to try out, thanks!

This is looking good, 23k will be broken either way and with both Win2k + tweaking + Ballistix DDR500 + the VPU mod, late/high 23k or even 24k, I think.

Right now the RAM is some weird unknown Geil RAM from a Kingston DC PC3200 Kit. They can do ~245mhz CL2.4.4 1:1 T1, which is okay I think. I'll get one 512mb Ballitstix DDR500 CL2 RAM within a few weeks. Those should do way better. Also it'll be nice to try other stuff than 12x multiplier 1:1.

GeForceTI4200 - Is that a prediction, that this rig can't do 23k under WinXP with these specs ?

It can 20768 pts now. That is only 240 pts away from 23k. Surely that should be able to be broken with minor tweaks(OS/driver mess curently)? Everything is basicly at auto in the BIOS.

Always love to read your predictions(no matter the outcome). Well, predict this 3700+ potential. It can do 3DMark and Super Pi 1M stabile with a LS(medium level), 12 multiplier 1:1 T1:

    2.8ghz @ 1.5v
    2.89ghz @ 1.56v
    2.95ghz @ 1.64v

Just for fun, what do you predict it can do with cascade cooling and in the hands on one of the way more extreme and experienced members at XS?

I was actually wondering about the memory brand/speed on the 9700. You can use ATITool to set the timings of the BGA ram tighter than stock and pick up quite a few points from that alone. I have samsung 2.8 on mine which for some reason had Tras set to 16 by default. If i set it to 8 with ATITool i pick up 7fps in nature alone.
However with your 340 memory max i suspect you have some sort of 3.0ns ram.
Spending 1-2 hours adjusting/testing your videocard ram timings can get you alot of free speed. The only thing it costs is time.

You sure have a strong CPU there though, it would be great to score some ram that could do decent fsb with 2-2-2 timings.

I ran my 9800p with default settings at 380core 340memory 250x10 1:1 2.5-8-3-3 and got 22k on the first pass with a loaded XP install with cat 4.9's. With some work you'll have 23k in the bag i'm sure.

Poki Thank you very, very much for the help!

Lowered the VPU RAM timings to Tras 8, Trp 6, and Trcd 7. The result was excellent:

    Sorry for crap quality screenie

    23k under WinXp :banana4:

I'll go for 24k under Win2k, when I have looked at what I can do with the R9700P. I love this rig

you could get 24k fairly easily with win2k and a better cooling setup for your 9700pro.. 380mhz is good but you could get 400+ no problem with a nice heatsink..

just curious but why did you take a ss using a digital camera? you could have just used a program such as hypersnap...

I'll try hypersnap and see if that one works. Fraps and various others don't. This is a messy WinXP install and some system files are missing(can't even do a search lol). I think, that the screenshot progs doesn't work because of some missing file, so I have used my digicam to take screenshots. It would be way better to get some program working, so I'll try that hypershot program, thanks

wow that tweaking of the videos memory timings is what got ya your 23k nice nature too. I had a 9800pro at your clocks and it did 129fps in nature, musta been relaxed ram timings. I fear if I play with those, it will hurt my rams overclock or even damage it. also I dont wanna play with the timings every reboot or if it sticks, it may prevent windows from loading. win2k is about 500 marks over xp so I say 23.5k in win2k. Nice score man, got a published link?

Kromosto - What Catalyst was the Omega based on? 3.1, 3.2, etc? It would be great if a simple driver change would do the last 1k

I am on 4.8 Omega right now.

I'll get some cooling on my mosfets and hopefully I can get the CPU to do more. That'll give some ektra hopefully

Yeah, the nature run was really good. I never really notice and compare my runs on fps, but that one stuck out. The Tras to 8 did it, as Poki suggested. Weird thing is, I can bench my 9700P at Tras 6. I'll get some extra aircooling on some part and do some new runs with those settings. Perhaps 200 to 400 more can be gained. If a driver change + Win2k would get me beyond or above 24k, then I would be in heaven.

I never leave the vpu ram tweaks on. Last thing I set before benching and turns them off after bench. I don't have the cooling to justify that kind of tweak in more than minutes.

I don't have a publish link for 01. Only got SE version, but I'll purchase the Pro version in a few weeks. But I'll publish my benches at that time. Hopefully I'll have a 24k compare link for you. Even when I get the 6800U/X800XT, I still want to see what this 9700P can do.

Me being a fool here. I clicked the results browser and not the online results browser. A compare link for you. Had to do another run as I didn't save the project. Lowered the timings from 3.3.3 to 3.3.0 and did the Tras 6 thing:

nice score for a winxp handicap. you beat my stock 9800pro by 4fps in nature, yes my 9800pro I had came with crap ram timings, it underperformed quite a bit compared to 9700pros even so I just resold that. Once I get winchester, here I come with a 23k score of my own on my softmodded 9500np

Thanks. I mounted a P4C Intel stock cooler a few inches over the VPU and it cooled the RAM okay and the CPU a little. Then tweaked the previous settings and got 23679

20mhz and 10mhz extra on VPU/RAM and I won't need Win2k to break 24k. A better working driver or me installing a better cooler could do the trick as well. I think, 24.5k - 25k can be done under optimal conditions. Possible. The 135.7 fps nature was actually a little low. I got 136.4 fps on a test run for stability. ~25mhz extra on the CPU and RAM @ 1:1 CL2.3.3.0.14.16 T1.

Begining to feel a little extreme now

r3b0rN - If you only set or apply the settings, they go away when restarting. You have the option to force the settings, but it is not recommended.
