    thx Kunaak

after reading the thread by Kunaak regarding 6800nu, GT and ultra bios flashing, I finally found the courage to bios flash my PNY verto Geforce 6800 GT. I Flashed my GT to Ultra and 1.4volts gpu. well, the results are astounding.

Ran the Biatch @ 440/1,140 clocks and got this!

    Legit score!

    73225

no artifacting, ran smoothly with no hiccups. it froze before many times. I even tried to change PSU cable arrangement to no avail. well, i'm pretty happy, and I feel she still has more! Specail thx to Kunaak.

all on air cooling, the GT is using stock in fact.

now give 3dmark 2001 and 2003 another try at those new clocks
by the way I remember you were so afraid to overclock your prescott and now your loving the wonders of tweaking! I never run anything stock, too slow LOL

probably not, until i can get a better cooler. Like maybe the NV silencer 5 or something. I would run 2k1 , but i can't submit because of cpu variance problem. (cool n' quiet) is enabled. I don't want to disable it, because my vcore is 1.7v which is too high already. it gets too hot.

if you go 1.5 volts I suggest watercooling.
the air cooling I used with 1.5 volts didn't hold up well.
but 1.5 volts is nothing for water

with 1.5 volts and watercooling, I got my 6800 NU to 480/880 and 73,300 something points on 3dmark with a 3.7 ghz P4.

wow, those are some good clocks Kunaak. I'm still gonna see what i can do with 1.4v, gonna play with some different combinations. I think maybe the most i can get is 73.5k. just ran another bench and got 73000. thx for the suggestions
any good water coolers for NV40 out there?
just can't believe how much difference .1v can make!

well your 2001 score will barely bluge, maybe 24.5k cause of the increase in nature. with high end cards, 2001 is mostly cpu. bet you could break 13k in 2003 though

the thing you got to remember about the 6800 videocards, is there is no throttle. there is no 2d or 3d speeds. its just got one speed.

omni extreme and things like that, will still have the 2d and 3d features for the FX cards, but for the GF6's theres just one speed.
so when setting the voltages, remember to mess with them all.

I had my best luck running the throttle voltage at 1.5 volts, and 2D voltage at 1.5 volts.
I have no idea why, but the throttle voltages actually increased my VDDR voltages alittle from 2.7 to just a tad under 2.8 volts, and got me some extra ram speed.

Shamino was the first to bring the fact that GF6's have only 1 speed and no throttle.
the voltages are different in bios, then they are when you get into window with a driver installed, but other then that, theres no throttle at all.
it's help to know that, so you don't try and waste your time with worrying about 2d and 3d speeds. just worry about one speed.

Geforce4ti 4200, my nature scores are very low to begin with for some reason, i think it's the drivers. 61.34 aren't very good drivers for shaders. but you are right.

Kunaak, I didn't know that the 6800 GT has only 1 speed mode, I thought there was 2D/3D modes. well, according to coolbits there are two different modes available.

thx Hawain Panda, i'll check that out.

there might be 2 different speeds, but I never saw it on my 6800.
theres a simple way to know this.
a card like a 5900 will freeze, then reset itself to 2d speeds.

I am on my 2nd 6800. they both just freeze, no resetting ever.

but theres definatly only 1 voltage.
I measured that every way till sunday, it doesn't change except in bios, then in windows with the driver installed.

My 6800 has only one voltage as well in 2D and 3D mode howver it does exhibit throttling in 3dmark2001. this would be exascerbated by using 16 pipelines up from 12. Rather than getting a high of around 300 in nature it would struggle to get 220. I've even have it start off quick on a run and then fall off before the cootage is reached in the first part. By lowering the clocks I managed to get further into the nature game before dropping off

Also GF4 nature on a 6800 is very LOD dependent. A lot more so than GF4 series.

    Regards

    Andy

PS I can hit 475 with 12 pipes and 459 with 16 pipes at 1.5v. This does show that better cooling would be in order.

I'm having more trouble at 1.5v than 1.4v. I'm still using stock cooling because my Maze 4 doesn't fit. Just goofing around basically. But do you guys think cooling is our only problem with 1.5v?... I was wondering if maybe the card's lack of the extra molex and mosfets had something to do with it. I don't have a better cooler atm to do more testing. You guys are running 1.5v with water and getting good results?

Think I'm just going to get a mcw-50... maybe add a 110w TEC later. Trying to figure out if the card will hold up to extra v before going through all the trouble.

Oh and kanavit... the nV silencer only take like 8C or so off if I remember correctly. Make sure you read a review before deciding if it's right for you. I'm going to skip it as I know I won't be satisfied with that temp improvement for long. I'm just going to do it right the first time and have fun gaming until then.

As far as I'm concerned I've got better results using stock voltage in bios but hard modding it to give higher voltages rather than through the bios. The increase in voltage through the bios only made o/c worse, and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one who encounters this. May also depend on qwhich bios people are using.

    .
Actually my card is air cooled at 1.5v 475 core and yes it does have the extra molex as it is the Asus gamer edition with the ultra PCB .. so maybe your assumption is correct ?

hey Andy, you have the same card I had.
I bought one of those a week and a half ago, amazing card.
did 450/1200 at 1.5 volts, when air cooled with a Artic Silencer.
I got greedy and flashed the card with a 6800 GT bios, cause the card did successfully do 16 pipelines, and 6 VS...

little did I realize that GT's only have 1 molex.
the Asus 6800 has 2 Molexs.
after flashing to the GT, the card was great except it didn't OC worth a damn anymore.
it was doing something like 380/1120.
took me a few days of poking around with my multimeter to find the problem.

the left molex was not being used.
there was no power to be read off it, after flashing to the GT bios.
I felt like a total bone head when I saw that.
it's something I should have realized, that the make was just too different.
so I flashed back to the 6800 NU, and to my suprise, the molex was still non functional, and the crappy OC was still there

so small suggestion, don't get greedy and try to flash it to a GT.
if anything, flash it to a Ultra

I get my new Asus 6800 tommorow.
hopefully it does 16 pipes like the old one.

(god let it do that please)

"don't get too greedy" wise words but sadly I think people who overclock will always be greedy because there is always that "what if" question always lurking

Seems strange that when you went back to the two molex conenctors the overclock stayed the same. Hope your new card has all 16 pipelines working, even if it doesn'tn unless they are really bad you can still bench with 16 ( mines gives large blocks in 3d ) and then use rivatuner to go back to 12 pipes for games games .. seems to work really well.

I really like the Asus V9999 GE like yourself, the PCB and extra Molex helps the overclock and in the UK it is not as dear as a GT if you can get all 16 pipes working well. The money I saved is going towards a cheap 6600 ( none GT ) at some point for more benching a "tiddler" for Christmas ( if they come out on AGP ).

I can imagine that 1.5v and watercooling on the card will allow 500+ Mhz and push 30k in 2001 and the top score in 3dmark05 ( I no longer bother too much with 03 as it is full of dodgy scores ) which is at present held by a very nice card !

    Good luck with your replacement.

    Regards

    Andy

Hrmmm, an Albatron 6800GT 256mb is $739, while the Asus Gamers Edition 256mb 6800NU is $749... So i'd take the GT...

What are the prices for a GT 256mb and an Asus GE 256mb like in UK and US?

The Asus 6800 I bought more for the potential of changing it to a 6800 Ultra.
it't the closest card on the market to a 6800 Ultra.
see even GT's are missing the extra molex and caps and have a very different set of resistors on the back of the card.
this asus 6800 does have a slightly different set of resistors on the back, but other then that, it's the exact same layout as the Ultras.

if the card mods to 16P, and 6VS, and can do 400/1100 easily, then theres no real reason why you can't flash it to a 6800 Ultra.
so the potential for the card, for modders is huge.

but, if the card doesn't mod, then you have a super expensive 6800, when you could have just bought a GT.
    so it's a gamble.

I like taking the chance, so I bought this instead of a GT.

I saw that on nvnews.net a few days ago and almost did it. It would be a great mod if the prices weren't so rapetacular. As it is, you can get a new GT for less and don't have to worry about it missing some pipes.

Great luck with the new card, though. I'd like to see how it clocks myself. That extra molex could prove very interesting...

Kunaak, what happens when you flash a GT to Ultra? Does it try to supply power to a phantom molex?

    I honestly couldn't tell you.
what you could do if your really into modding, is solder a extra molex to the area it should be on the GT, then flash it, and see what happens.

but honestly, Hell-fire would know more about this then I would.
when it comes to voltages and what happens when you such and such, I am at a loss, it's just a guess from me.

    on a side note .

the mod worked, 16P and 6 VS.
I haven't began overclocking it yet, but I am just glad to see it modded good.
man that feels good to know.
I was so worried it wouldn't.
this time, no flashing to a GT

    got my super 6800 back
