    It really isn't that demanding. I get a smooth 55-60 fps ingame - 4xAA 8xAF/1280x1024/all details maximum with an XP mobile@ 2250(10*225) and 9800pro 440/370. With the included benchmark I get 66fps.
    Oh yeah, Cat 4.8

Also keep in mind, it depends a lot on the # of players on the servers.

so, according to these benchmarks, the ati cards arent totally destroying the 6800 cards in hl2, correct? seems to me that this makes the 6800 the better choice.

well the 6800 isnt killing the x800 series either..

benchmarks are all pretty damn close. To me it all comes down to your pick. i got a x800pro cuz thats the ONLY card i could find in stock weeks ago, i do have an SFF so i only have 1 slot and i need a thin cooler.

is there a way to download the demo/bench without the coupon?

how come some sites show the nvidia cards beating the ati cards and then other sites show the ati cards beating the nvidia cards????

ive seen the benches on driverheaven and vr-zone, i know the guys who benched and i totally trust them, and they both say that the ati cards beat the nvidia cards by a lot in 9 of 10 settings, and yes, they tried the leaked beta 65.xx drivers as well!

so theres something really fishy going on here with sites reporting nv cards that beat the ati cards

yea, the beta has been updated a few times as well so that could affect performance as well.

still, EVERYONE has the 6800 Ultra over 50fps @ 16x12 with full filtering which would seem to indicate that both cards are perfectly legitamite options for HL2...

I hope using my tables makes comparison of reviews easy.

Personally, after quickly skimming through the first VST reviews, I quickly noticed how firingsquad CS:Beta is much lower than other reviews (v-sync?), and VR-Zone has the 9800's really low (~40fps), and the greatest difference between X800's and 6800's. The X800XT-PE is consistently in the top, whereas X800Pro typically a bit below the 6800's (U and GT), except for Vr-zone, and Firingsquad where it oddly manages to be faster than the VR-zone X800Pro, while the X800XT-PE is lower. Despite most sites using either the P4 3.4C or A64 3800+, and the same drivers, there are BIG differences.

So, now I'm waiting to add reviews from: anandtech, hardocp, tomshardware... which are strangely absent. I have a feeling that Valve will release VST 1.2 or something like that, in a couple weeks anyway, so these results wont mean much.

VST is the Video Stress Test ...

VST is the only comparable one, because they might've created their own demos from Source game play ... their demos might differ, etc ...

    Slavik got it right ;o)

VST is only 1 you can compare...

I know that VR-Zone must have ed up... Unless they want anybody to believe that 9800XT is slower than the 5950U :P

Valve+Nvidia must sure have been working hard to get like 150% performance and degrade 9800XT by 50%

I think the X800pro will be the exact same performance as the 6800U... X800XT will be at the top...

But hey... HL2 is ALOT more demanding... Also from your CPU... The AI should be huge...

This is just a brainless Benchmark... But it looks good for ATI...

wait till games start using 3Dc ... that should give a boost ... then we will have SM3 vs. 3Dc which are completely unrelated, but these "features" are what the companies are pushing ... like GM pushing the latest model big block and Bentley pushing the most luxurious/comfortable car ...

I dont think its gonna be a vs thing...

Next gen cards(ATI's FIDO) will have SM3.0 (And Ultrashadow?) And its supposed to be here q12005...

Havnt heard anything about Nvidias next GPU...

afaik sm3.0 wont bring any new eye candy settings, it will just speed up sm2.0 stuff...

so 3dc is actually more interesting imo.

and about the ai in hl2... well all i can say is that when all their stuff was leaked it showed that all the "ai" was actually a script. so the enemies didnt do what they did calculating something, it was all scripted down to the second...

3Dc is just a texture compression algorithm ...

SM3 and 3Dc both only improve the performance slightly ...
