Hi, all :-)
Does anybody faced compatibility troubles with Monsoon fittings and some watercool components? such as different waterblocks, reservoirs, etc.
Some of my friends faced such issues. The first one with Bitspower's waterblock for RAM and the second one again with Bitspower WB, but fullcover for MSI GTX580 Lighting.
As I have seen and understand the problem causes by thread lenght, or in other words that fittings is not threaded fully - up to the base, but only and visually up to the place where the o-ring should be...
As we know threads can't be ideally identical and differs from item to item a bit. In both cases problem were solved by using the spacers (the smallest ones) which "consumed" the unthreaded part of the fittings base and sealed connection with it's own o-ring. Btw the angled adapters comparing to regular straight fittings performed well and w/o any spacers, but visually they are exact the same as straight fittings at the base part...
I'm sure that BP products are not only that may experience such troubles due to not full threaded base. Do you plan to change something and make monsoon's with full threads in a future?
I'm now planning to buy some stuff (in most the fittings and connectors accessories) for my new rig. And it's hard to make a decision. I like monsoon's and how they look and perform, but possible compatibility issues confuses me a bit.
Also how reliable the rotary connectors comparing to competitors? Will they leak after some time of use? With BP's rotary angles I faced leaking one only once and after all cured it with boiled water easily.
Thread length is 5mm--as are most but not all fittings these days. Your correct when you say the entire length is not threaded, however the diameter for the portion that is not threaded is smaller in diameter then the threaded portion. This is usually refereed to as "undercut". In simple terms that means the unthreaded portion will fit anywhere the threaded portion has passed. The unthreaded area is there to provide a better seal for the O ring.
Not sure why your friends had an issue...if you look at page three of Martin's review here he discusses flow rates and sizes. You can also see from his pictures that most of the better/premium brands have the undercut to aid in O ring sealing.

Thanks for reply.
I think the only reason of that issues is that the undercut area is too big OR from time2time a bit different. It's why the straight fittings haven't work well on some WB's, but the angled fit perfect...
O-ring compresses a lot, when fitting is screwed in thread, so I think an extra large undercut area is not required at all, but shortening it a little will solve all possible compatibility issues.
Do you plan to release more connectors/adaptors under Monsoon brand? :-) such as extrenders, rotary tools etc. Angles looks fine, but sometimes it's not enough, and mixing different fittings brands looks bad due to different design minimum and often different coating, it's color tone, etc.
Yeah, sorry for taking so long on the review:

Looking forward to putting the copper variety to good use on my rebuild.
Thanks!
Martin
The undercut has ALWAYS been within the BSPP spec. On the very first batch (about two years ago) a VERY small number of users had problems on certain models of radiators that were a little under spec. When I say a small number of users I mean in the neighborhood of 1 in 1,000. We took care of those customers and increased the undercut 10% over spec on all subsequent production runs to make sure it would no longer be an issue. It may be possible your friend got a hold of a fitting from that original batch.
The thread form on the angles are identical to the compression fittings, (Free Centers and Carbons) and are cut on the same machine by the same crotchety old guy...and his eyesight is not too bad...as long as he has his glasses on =)
I would be happy to make some of the connectors and adapters (I make some for myself and my buddies from time to time in fact) but resellers have been less than warm about stocking them. They all tell me they just don't sell very well.
Just took apart my loop for some cleaning cause it was running a little warm and found this.
Had 10 blue fittings and the coating inside every one of them was striped off. Most of it ending up stuck in my waterblocks!
They look amazing in my case, but it's a bit disappointing when they are clogging up my loop.
I wonder what have you used as coolant? If it's with distilled and no alu in loop, it might get rather bloody on vendor with possible recalls :/
Just water and one of Monsoon's silver plugs. I never used any additives or dyes. And of course no aluminum.
I do use dual DCC pumps which is a lot of water moving through them I guess.
CRFX--Dual pumps should not matter. We have tested with many different pump configurations without issue. Can you PM me with the particulars so I can figure out what happened? The fittings are chrome plated first before the color layer and the color plating doesn't really extend that far down into the barbs normally so I am not really sure how you could have gotten that massive a quantity of material. Said another way, the plating layer is so thin that the amount of material in your image is enough to plate 100+ fittings. It is just way too much material for a loops worth of barbs.
***EDIT*** I just reread my post and just in case it sounds like I am saying you did something incorrect that is 100% NOT the case. The color layer does not really plate over brass but sticks like crazy to nickel/chrome. The inside of the barb (any brand of barb) is not plated very far down inside because of anode shadow. The physical amount of blue material makes me think your barbs must have had a LOT of excess material when they were plated was more my point.

Was just talking with my plating guru and his thinking is that there might have been some residual oil from the machining process left on the inside of the barbs that prevented a perfect bond. Coupled with your dual pumps and the finish washed loose. The parts go through a degrease process but it's possible/likely some oil was missed. I am sorry you had this issue CRFX...we do our very best to catch any problems in our quality control inspections but this one would have been hard to actually see.
He was also curious about the amount of material. The O ring in the center of the block base is a standard G1/4 right? Using that O ring as a scale reference. When we do a full batch of 5,000 fittings the tank gets like 1 cup of the color material.
If you can get me your information I can get replacement barbs in the mail to you if you want them.
Again, sorry you had an issue.

Just an update to show you guys the new fitting we are working on. We are calling them Chain Gun Fittings in house for right now. Will be available in 1/2" x 3/4" and 3/8" x 5/8". In addition to looking pretty nice they are very easy on the fingers. We will be selling them in six packs like the Free Centers and Carbons with a free wrench. We are fine tuning the fit now for production and hope to be shipping in about 30 days or so.

Gene you're giving me too many options. First I was like yeah holy monsoons batman! Then I was like oooooh carbon monsoons! Now I'm can't even make a decision :P
Thief is down for some modding so I'm rocking a temporary testbench for now:

It looks like we will be adding at least one of the thin wall tube sizes after all. Not sure wich one yet and it won't be right at launch--but shortly after.
Wow DB--killer work as usual...what event are those taken at?
Also, we have changed to a much brighter LED in the rotary LED plugs--more then 2 x brighter. It makes a very noticeable difference in lighting the tube. As soon as they are done and packaged up I will send some out to you. Will be a few weeks and we both know how bad my memory is so remind me.
They should be done in time for our new line of rigid tube and fittings so I will send some of those along also.

Are the limited edition copper Monsoon Free Center Compression Fittings still sold anywhere?
The even was Maker Faire in San Fran (worked the booth with Bodakker).
One of your competitors just released a hard lines as wellI will have some of them when I get home from my current trip (Grand Canyon).
"Thing is, I no longer consider you a member but, rather a parasite...one that should be expunged."
Not that I am aware of. Frozen has expressed some interest in carrying the copper fittings...you might email them and let them know you are interested.
Yes from what I have seen so far they have done a nice job too--not a lot of room for improvement/differentiation. I will be curious to see if rigid tube gains any significant market. It has been around for almost 10 years and really hasn't caught on all that much.
I am also planning a trip to the Grand Canyon in February or March with some friends DB...please let me know how yours goes when you get back and any tips/tricks for the best visit you pick up along the way =)
I see Maker Bot was purchased for 400 mil. Nice payday for somebody!
