I know that there is no way to tell for sure, short of pulling the spreaders, but since I don't know the ins and outs of these ICs used in assembling the 8GB modules I was hoping that timings & voltage might narrow it down, even if it were only by way of excluding some of the players.
A buddy of mine is looking to go to 16GB and he was asking me what I thought about them since they are on sale at the Egg and because I didn't really have a clue I thought that I'd try my luck here.
