Thumbs up no, this is not the 1st of april ... x86 beats ARM at power efficency in Tablets

The myth of ARM efficiency just went it smoke in one single graph:

More coming soon! x86 can be more efficient and faster than anything made today

The real question is 'what are the battery capacities' then I read Anand's tweet:

battery capacity is similar to Surface but with a larger display
That is certainly an impressive stat, if performance is > Surface, then Intel can claim top honors at least until A15 arrives in force.

I don't expect A15 to change anything on this.

    Nice stuff Francois...

If AMD shrunk Desna on 28nm bulk they would maybe be able to compete as well. 40nm won't cut it for them and Temash will be way too late to the party.

Let's hope AMD can join the dance on x86, I believe that AMD and Intel competition makes x86 unbeatable (very personal opinion)

My question is... if they're so power efficient, why didn't Microsoft go x86 first?

Performance was not a issue to crack, but now that x86 with Atom is more power efficient than ARM, it is good enough that I come out of my hole to share

That was not obvious when MS decided last year, now, since then, Clovertrail has a very smart memory controller, awesome power efficiency, and everything to be the most power efficient. On the top of this, user interface is very much about being able to guaranty frame rate while allowing the CPU to provide best single threaded performance, to insure responsiveness, The performance group and the Atom group worked on finding a very smart way of doing it, this is going to cause Atom to be astonishingly good at Windows 8 UI, while saving energy to the max.

This is going to be difficult to catch up from now on for the others, we understood the recipe.

to the new order of power efficiency.

There are no Android devices in that chart and the Surface tablet is using a Tegra 3 QC, which isn't exactly the most energy efficient SoC out there. They could at least have compared it to the Ativ Tab which uses a Krait DC. Without any further info i'd call this inconclusive
Specs for the device can be found here btw http://www.samsung.com/global/ativ/ativ_pc.html and herehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Windows_8_devices Just scroll down

Even if this is true, it does not exactly imply x86 is golden. I would reserve judgement till I see the perf numbers (CPU and GPU) and the inclusion of Krait/A15 SoC

I'd like to see something like OMAP 5 vs intel, and like the other members I would've loved to see andriod as well in play for real world comparison... oly because most of the market is android based.

So now atom is better than ARM because of ONE graph that is just maybe optimized to suit intel
lots and lots of cores and lots and lots of tuners,HTPC's boards,cases,HDD's,vga's,DDR1&2&3 etc etc all powered by Corsair PSU's

the significance being it won in ARM's strongest metric.

of course, it's not the end-all, but it's pretty significant when ARM folk said it would never happen.

Doesn't the LCD backlight contribute more to this than the SoC? If it's the cheaper model it has a 1366x768 display which likely doesn't require as powerful backlight as the other products which use LCDs with a very high PPI.

what about some mix arm and x86 chip in future? it could be interesting. Btw, nice. What about capacity of battery?

The graph shows data about how long the battery lasted while browsing the web, which kind of implies that it is a measurement of the power consumption of the entire device as well as the performance of the battery, shouldn't that lead to the conclusion that there are too many variables to conclude much about the power efficiency of Atom?

that and processing power to handle the extra pixels
thats why the ipad3 needed a battery MUCH larger to get the same battery life.
also this chart shows NOTHING about efficiency either, which is the point of the whole argument.
