The Nikkor TC-14E II teleconverter is superb. It causes almost no distortion, has very little softness, and has very little impact on auto focusing. It's a lot of money to spend (about US $500) if you have a cheaper telephoto or zoom telephoto, but if you have some nice Nikkor glass it's a great investment.

I also have the Nikkor 1.7X teleconverter and I'm less impressed with that. It causes noticeable softness, though not extreme, and really slows down auto focusing in marginal light, though in bright daylight it works well. Perhaps a back-handed way of judging the 1.7X teleconverter is to note that I rarely ever use it. I end up using the 1.4X when I use a teleconverter.

Tanner Pearson at the Los Angeles Kings Development Camp on July 7, 2012 (Toyota Sports Center, El Segundo CA). He was the LA Kings first round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. This was the first day I was using a new lens, a 400mm f/2.8 telephoto. Shooting on a monopod, some pictures turned out great, some not so good, which is to be expected as I learn how to best use this lens.

Anze Kopitar kissing the Stanley Cup (June 11, 2012, at Staples Center, Los Angeles CA).
Sometimes it's not possible to capture a perfect shot, but you don't care, you just do the best you can. As a long time LA Kings season ticket holder, who has seen an incredible number of less than stellar years, seeing the Kings win the Stanley Cup was a memory that will stay with me a lifetime. Even though I was more than 150 feet away from where the players were lifting the Stanley Cup over their heads, and with just a zoom point-and-shoot camera, I wanted to capture some memories. Earlier in the game I was trying to use the camera's video feature but when the Kings scored the first goal of the game right in front of me I started jumping up and down and screaming like a teenage girl and totally spoiled the video. At that moment I decided, 'screw any photos or video - I'm watching this game', and I ended up taking very few actual game action shots. Afterwards I texted to all my friends, Greatest! Game! Ever!

Like water off the back of a duck (mallard). I went to my local botanic garden this morning and did some testing to see how my new 400mm lens pairs up with a Nikon 1 camera. The magnification was so great that it often was difficult to find the target image in the viewfinder.

Exposure Bias: 0 (overall no change but opened up shadows about one stop)
Lens: Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G VR with FT-1 Adapter (gives 2.7X focal length improvement)

Nice shot. I think that is a Sphinx moth, more specifically, White-lined sphinx (Hyles lineata).
