8360 works (see AXm77's screenshot above, he has a single one in the board with 3x slower cpus!)

there is a 300mhz per core clock bump (so cumulative over 16 cores that is a 4.8ghz increase) between 8354 and 8360.. not sure if the 30w per processor bump is worth it.. you're effectively adding a 120w 2.4ghz dual core or similar.. yes I know it doesn't work like that, but it's easier to quantify!

that is very true 120w is alot, but so is an extra 2.4ghz lol hmmmm

the 8354' give 80,000ppd according AXm77 can anyone workout that ppd the 8360's will give?

If it was linear with clockspeed you'd be sitting at almost 90k ppd. The interesting thing is nobody's tried bigBeta yet - there is apparently some epic points to be had, and they need a 12+ core system.. the quad quad arima sit right in the meat of bigbeta territory!

so im looking at and extra 10k ppd for an extra 120w.... hmmmm

d'oh! fail on my part there XD . imho the 10k ppd boost isn't worth the extra cost of power, better coolers, higher rated PSU, etc etc

When I get some cash together I will order a Shanghai quad core to test the board.. IIRC the quads don't need the split power plane support, but i think the board may be limited to 1ghz HT bus, which leaves us with 2.7GHz shanghai as the fastest cpu.. assuming it works.. either that or we're stuck on santa rosa (k8) or Barcelona (k10 v1)

Interestingly the wikipedia article lists Barcelona having split power planes.. hmmm. True split = 6 core Istanbuls maybe. It's all up to what this 1.06 BIOS holds in it's binary hands I think

i bought the Arima board the other day from the usa for £75 inc shipping will be 2-3 weeks before it arrives tho

i hope is the BIOS rev 1.0.0 or above so i can use the B3 8354, they are £15 each

ive also bought 4 retaining brackets and the psu jumper connector so far...

i really want to get those 8354's but i dont know which BIOS the board has yet.... and im not going to find out unless i buy one anyway lol
Don't count on anything better than 1.0.0 (unless you are extremely lucky). I got two of them (one 2 years ago, second one 3 weeks and both come with 1.0.0). You better get that 8354's. I have 8360's and temperature difference between 54's and 60's is +10C and to make it weird, they do not scale very well (only ~3% in Folding). If you can get 8350HE's that would be best CPU's for long runs (24/7).

If anyone looking for coolers, you can try to get Cooler Master 212's refurbished from CM store for $12/each. I can provide mounts for it:

    i got the 8354's

    Quick question....

the PSU i've bought has 2 4pin eps connectors which you can slot together to make it 8 pin, can i use a 4 pin to 8 pin adapter on both of them to give me 2 8pin plugs?

@confusis: AmiJIm unsuccessfully tested 8380 with 1.0.6 BIOS (post #743)

@kirk46: So you setting F@H cruncher? If so, fill all 16 memory slots with 667MHz memory, F@H love memory bandwidth, 512MB stick are fine, ( on -bigbeta usage is ~4GB).
Yes, you can use adapters 4to8-pin, but be sure your power supply can handle load. Looks to me as 16-pin connector supplying power to cpus.

My story was: When I started F@H on my original Arima setup (4x 8354's B2, 8x 1GB 400MHz ram's), on -smp only my PPD was around 10k.
    I was like: WTH my dual L5420's (2x quads @ 2.5GHz) on Win7 doing ~16k, quad Barcelona's (4x quad @ 2.2GHz) under Linux can't be that bad.
Start digging: TheKraken ~ 150% boost!!! (~ 26k PPD!!!) - lets try go "big" - not enough - loosing bonus deadline by 6~8 hours.
    What's next? faster cpu's or faster memory. Got 4x 8360's B3 cheap and 8x 1GB 667 ram's.
Ram was delivered first, so after switch - another nice boost! ~35k PPD on -smp only! Another try on "big" - yes!!! - ~57min/frame on 6901 = 3.96 day = bonussss! = ~54k PPD!!!
There is hope! 8360's are ~13% faster than 8354's so from 57min/frame I was hoping for 51imn/frame boost. Replaced cpu's and surprise: temps jump up from middle 40's to high 50's,
but frame time dropped only around 2min (~55min/frame - anyone have ideas why 8360's are so ineffective? Thermal throttling maybe?). It was not worth jump on power usage, so I switched back to 8354's. Big disappointment!
Well, the only thing left, was adding more memory. To be careful I just ordered 4x 1GB 667 - another boost around ~ 8k PPD!
    In time when another set of 4x 1GB 667's got delivered, I was done with 6901, and was working on 6903 - with 16x 1GB 667 and 8354's running 24/7 - 82k PPD.

P.S When I installed last 4 memory sticks my system refused to boot. Great! Looks like I got bad memory, but I installed "bad" memory in another cpu slots - working, dropped "good" one in last slots - no boot.
Even better! Must be screwed motherboard! In last effort, I removed cpu from socket and to my surprise, I saw damage on edges. Replaced it with one 8360 and everything works correctly.
That is what you saw on screenshot in my previous post.

For right price, yes 512MB is enough. I got 1GB's , because found them cheaper than 512MB.
Get yourself right memory: DDR2 PC2-5300 667 Registered ECC.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190683854760 these will work?

That will not work. Memory you in your link is FB-DIMM (fully buffered), you need registered. Small tip: if memory have heat spreader - 99% it is FB-DIMM.

Aw man! Ah well. Would this be due to the power planes or AGESA? I'm not averse to a bit of BIOS hacking if need be.

On a positive note, I'm considering emailing the coreboot guys about this board. Open source BIOS replacement, maybe we will see proper ACPI support.
